GM's thread about nothing (16 Viewers)

Hello again GMTAN. Just got back from nearly 7 months at sea with no access to the FBG. Good to see this place is still around...feel like I was out there protecting at least one thing worthwhile :) Any major areas to hit up with nearly a years worth of back material to sort through?
Thanks for your service - very much appreciated. How are your spirits?
Cold, wet, and about 6% (beer isn't exactly considered spirits, but oh well). Happy to be almost home. I am currently in California and won't see the family until next weekend so I am bored out of my skull, but getting closer.

Welcome back. I was wondering how you were doing since we hadn't heard from you in awhile. Definitely read the Coshole era portion of the thread.
Thanks Aaron! Sitting about a month away from retiring from the service and wrapping up business. When did Coshole happen?

Ugg. Out of practice with multi-quote (not that I was a prolific poster previously)...

TY Guster and Krista. I was in Dubai Superbowl Weekend so I may have caught a bit of Coshole while scanning the forum. I will be sure to go back and read through.

Took the kids to a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese today, at 9:30 in the morning. I didn't even know they were open that early (they actually open at 9am) and I sure didn't know they started churning out crappy pizza that early, but they do.Our group showed up and the only other customer in the entire place was creepy guy playing "Deal or No Deal" for tickets to get overpriced kids junk. But to each his own. My cousin and I quickly ran out of pedo jokes and the guy quickly left after a few minutes. Anyway, we were there for three hours and I was only out 20 bucks because the games there are so cheap. Now back at the house where we are at that awkward "we did something today, too late in the day to do something before going back to their mom's house" place. Thinking about just pouring pixie sticks down them until time to go.
:lmao:This is "free espresso and a puppy" time.

I'm on my way to getting drunk and more and more convincing myself to say "#### it" to all these jobs and just move to Nicaragua now. He was on Whale Wars, chief. I'm starting to root for the Japs.

I used to spend st Patrick's day with some older Irish guys in Austin that loved to drink and tell jokes and watch euro soccer live at the bar. I miss those guys.
Am I crazy when I think that you're a decent website resource? I think it's you, but can't remember. Romo is in the market for a landing page + 3ish and we have no real way of knowing what's good and fair.
You can do it yourself and get decent results. Or expect to pay $1k per page to get exactly what you want. If you decide to pay for high quality let me know. I have a friend who is crazy talented that just opened his own shop.

Eta - the middle ground is often not worth it. Unless you know exactly what you want (content, design, and navigation) you will rue the day you tried to hire some college kid for $500 or outsourced it to India on your own. Most designers and programmers may try to make an honest effort to do a good job but they can't read your mind. Saying "make it look like the apple website but for the roofing sector" will drive you both crazy. If you don't do it yourself then you need someone who will spend time learning about your business and your competitors and to do that well takes time. And that costs money.

Hey Ricky!Glad to see you here. Anything you can share from your time abroad?
Not too much to share. Our squadron was (is) flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, outside of that we mainly spent our time measuring our junk against Iran's and escorting UAVs with our F-18s. Pulled into Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Phuket, Thailand, Manama, Bahrain (my old stomping grounds during my prior tour of service), and Dubai (x3). The rest of the time was spent doing small circles at sea while our aircraft punched holes in the sky. I was able to come home a little bit early so that I can prepare for entering the world post military.

No issues, I am having a few beers tonight myself since I can. The slur I was calling into issue was the one towards our Asian friends.

I used to work on the jets (for some reason they make us stop doing the fun stuff and manage people instead at a certain point), not fly them. Besides I am sure I can give GM a run for his money as far as pasty white guys go...the sun is not my friend. Great question though.

Happy St. Patricks Day. I hate this holiday now that I'm married with kids. Cooked corned beef this morning then filled up two of those portable dumpsters with crap from my basement as we are finishing it off beginning in 10 days. Maybe I'll go have a Guiness now.
Cost to refinish?Thinking I need to start in this direction so my son has somewhere to play.
When all is said and done, probably about 30k.
I'm screwed.
Construction will be about 17k but furnishings will make up the majority of the balance. It is only 600 sq ft. You just have a toddler, you don't need any stinking furniture, just a nice carpet and walls that he can draw on. Oh and a big fathead poster of uncle scupper.
I am tiling part of my basement now, but I need a padded rec room like you described above for him to terrorize. Also need to replace my ancient furnace down there.

wtmf are you using for construction materials??DIY re-did a basement (from scratch) of about the same size for 1500
Ok now we're talking.

Probably. You should probably drink extra heavy just to be sure. You don't want to leave anything to chance.

Any additional details you can provide, or does this just mean that you were patrolling in the Gulf?

Nothing going on that hasn't been reported through the news or I wouldn't be talking about it. We ramped up early to head out last year because of heightened tension in the area between Iran and Israel. Things calmed down when Israel decided that Iran wasn't quite ready to start rolling Nukes off of an assembly line just yet. Our mission adjusted. We flew escort missions for UAVs when Iran decided it was cool to start shooting at them (demoralizing stuff there...escorting UAVs???). Normal US presence in the Middle East after early talk of things taking a turn for the worse in the area.

Well sure, there is that. Except you need to picture a drone pilot mooning a video image only he can see while playing with his joystick. On second thought, it might not be the same thing.

I mean, they don't have two houses that they own outright. They don't have xxxxxxxx (only SLB knows, or doesn't ;) ) in savings. They have kids or something that makes things more complicated.I have a cat that needs a special diet I could bring down with me. I have an opportunity right now where I could work 20 hours a week if I wanted and make $100K/year, which is more than enough. Or I could forgo any work at all and just live on rental income from the other house (plus savings if necessary--shouldn't be). No health insurance? Health care is top-notch and cheap as dirt there. Why wouldn't I do this? The only reason seems to be that I'm scared to give up huge earnings potential and do what I'd prefer instead.
This has probably already been covered, but if you can afford to retire in a nice house in a tropical paradise now and don't really love what you do, I can't see too many good reasons to keep grinding away, especially considering your personality having trouble not caring and mailing it in. What good would more money do you?

Say you keep making bank. Save another 500k or a million in the next 10-15 years. Then what? You'd move to a tropical local and live a retired tropical life. So, if you can swing that now, why not?My idea of a tropical retirement is to move somewhere, buy a little place, and work 20 hrs a week locally at some cool job like giving jeep tours or kayak instructor. Something you don't have to take work home or worry about anything.
:) Thanks. Another idea was to do just what you say, work a little job that I like instead. Could buy a car and do a tour business really easily, between my charming friend Julio and me. So give up all the crap entirely.
I can't quite picture this for myself yet even though I am coming to a crossroad in my life, but I have looked at what it is going to take for me to walk away from everything a bit later down the road. Having a few years worth of savings would allow a nice break, but then what? You would be retiring very early, so one fairly accepted standard would be having your living expenses x25 to 30 banked now. Can you live off of a yearly pull of 4% of your savings and investments? For just yourself and a cat you can likely go slightly higher than this since you wouldn't be concerned with leaving anything behind, but you likely wouldn't want to try and re-enter the workforce 10 to 15 years down the road. 60k per year would require 1.4MM today to stay within a 4% withdrawal rate. Getting by on less is likely doable, but the risk of having to return to work needs to be considered. Shutting down this life and supplementing it with a local job/other investment income should be doable, but can you do it? It sounds like a lot to leave behind and I envy you if you can make that next step. Many people have walked away with less, but this is where I would feel comfortable and from everything that I have observed you maintain a higher standard of living than I do.

Last day of springbreak and I can't even enjoy it, woke up at 10pm... Have to go buy a used tire some point before class at noon tomorrow.

Not to sound dooshy, but since you're already there, here goes. Telling anyone outside of the 1% that finishing a basement costs 30k is friggin idiotic. The only thing more idiotic is actually paying 30k to finish a basement. I'm assuming mahogany floors, walls made of white children, and a solid gold toilet were on your list of must-haves?

The majority of our quotes for that sized basement were in the high 20's low 30's. Two came in less than half of those. When I said it would come close to 30k that included furniture, electronics and custom built entertainment center. The actually walls, tile, drywall ceiling isn't that expensive. I compared it with some do it yourselver friends and it wasn't that much more.

Hey Ricky, thanks for the service. My FIL did did similar work to you. He was a career enlisted man (E6 I think it was - they called him "Chief," except he's a big German so it was only a slur ironically) on an aircraft carrier working as a flight mechanic, usually fighters (don't ask me which kind, I assume F-16s toward the end). When he retired all the officer pilots chipped in and got him something expensive to drink and told him they hated seeing him go as they always felt safer seeing him down there before take off. I want to say he was on the Eisenhower, but I'm not positive. He toured a lot of your haunts. Dubai comes up in his stories a lot.

Thanks guys. Just got home. I've had WAY too many grown men crying in my arms lately. (Make your own jokes.) I think Dylan/Hendrix had it right. Life is but a joke. I hope with every fiber of my being that there is something better on the other side.

I think I've told this story before but maybe not. Mrs. SLB didn't hear it until last night for the first time and she knows, well as much as she needs to, pretty much everything about me.

When I was 13 I got this dream job at a baseball card store. I was in there all the time and I knew my ####, mostly, I wanted to make money. So he hired me on to help him out on a part time basis. Needless to say, there is a lot of down time in such an enterprise so we talked a lot. His outlook on life was that we are in hell now and the only way we get to move on was to be good otherwise you keep getting reborn into this world. Sort of Hinduism I guess. The place wasn't close to my house so my Mom had to drive me there. So when I got my license I would pop in from time-to-time to say hello. I stopped in when I was 17 to learn he died of a heart attack. This guy, Bill, wasn't overweight or anything in the least either. RIP brother Bill. More and more I think that he was right.

At the very least, when I left my GB's were laughing. I can't even tell you what I said, I was on autopilot. At least they got to laugh today for a little while. :(
found out via FB that an acquaintance of mine had a heart attack at 35 and then caught pneumonia in the hospital. Guy is in great shape. Not a close friend, but he played in a band in college that used to always play our parties...looks like he's still in the hospital, so not sure of the exact progress...but it still hit home a tad for me
Scary ####. I think in the back of most people's minds you think you'll live to a ripe old age but that actually seems less likely lately.
So Mr. Krista posts in the FFA but just not here?

Getting offers from Minneapolis and Chicago right now... tempting, but then I looked on weather.com. ooof, how do you people do it?

My uncle was on the USS Enterprise in 'Nam. Somewhat disturbingly...

Obviously they were out of harm's way for the most part, but one time a guy on the deck got cut clean in half by one of those wires that they use to launch the jets.
