I just met with a serial student I really like. He's a vet of Afghanistan and through some discussions about his tour we became friends of a sort. We're friends on FB even though as a rule I don't "friend" current students. He's a delight to have in class, one of those alpha students who charge up discussion and make my job both rewarding and fun. We joke together all the time.

He's gay. His boyfriend, an older guy, has been in and out of the hospital all semester with various nagging ailments.

I just found out that earlier this week his boyfriend tested HIV positive. While my student's test came back negative, apparently a positive test can pop up any time in the next three months, and according him, there's a good chance he also has HIV.

I feel numb. He's just a kid. 26, sure, but just a kid. Smart, good looking guy, great personality, great sense of humor, a joy to be around.

Bloody hell.

I'd never think of it.

I asked because a former student told me she's taking an Intro to Lit class with this guy in my department. He has a good rep. His students love him even though they admit he gives them a ton of work. The girl went on to tell me how they were reading Jack London, William Faulkner, and yes IB, Vonnegut...."and we got to read his short story too!"

I almost burst out laughing. Except her face said she actually felt privileged to have read this.

All I could think was, what a colossal d-bag.

A note about this guy. The first year I was there he was taking his turn as chair. I'd been given a summer class because I needed the dough. The class quickly filled up. Then, three days before classes started, all my students were suddenly shifted out of my section into another professor's, who only had 3 students registered. Then my class was canceled without anyone notifying me, and my family had a real lean summer. I sent an email asking why he did this. The spineless ******* never answered. I contacted the academic dean, and he was baffled. Turns out only those two people have the power to switch students like that is the chair and dean, so he filled up his friend's class and screwed me and didn't even have the balls to tell me I'd lost the class.

Next summer he greased the way for his daughter to get hired, a girl with a teaching certificate (for secondary school) fresh from college.

Thing is, the guy countenances himself as this anti-establishment literary rebel. His area of expertise is Beat Literature. For an old guy, he dresses sloppy and "cool." And yet, when he gets any real power, he immediately abuses it.

So I wasn't surprised when he forced his students to read his work. I thought it douchey as hell, but knew I was biased because I already disliked the guy.

Got in around 3AM, pretty hammered. Doesn't seem as cold as I was expecting, but unsure how fun this game will be with the constant rain. I'll be here through the weekend, and it looks like it may clear up so still should be a good trip. I have lots of drinking to do.

We settle in at Albert Oaks and drive the Party Bus around Austin. Uncle Buck pops in from San Antonio on game day. Kevzilla shows up like Kramer, says his catchphrase (TBD) and leaves. Homer, Thorn and Guster can each play the "Chrissy Snow during the fifth season of Three's Company" where they call in from out of state with witty, funny banter to end the episode.

A "very special episode" would involve GM, SLB (with Pepper ) and YSR (with Romo ) to hold an intervention for Uni. But just when Uni is about to break down and pack for rehab, Homer, Guster and Stu bust in with 3 bachlorette parties, the University of Texas cheerleader squad and half of the clientele from Star Bar. A large party breaks out and the last scene is of Uni highfiveing Guster as Guster leads a coed to the backseat of her sedan.
