GM's thread about nothing (28 Viewers)

I'm a good page or two behind. But something I never really talked about here was that a good friend of mine that I worked with last summer had a bit of bad news. Just an all-around awesome guy that I hung out and partied with pretty much from the day we met.

Cancer. A baseball-sized tumor right on his spine...seriously, within a few days, we went from talking about when he'd be back in town to "holy #### I'm gonna die in six weeks"

Just got a text from him.

"Just found out the large tumor i had removed is benign! I am cancer free! Thank you, PJ. Your calls and texts made laugh during the worst times I could imagine. Thank you!"

I cried like a baby when I got that.

I'm crying again right now.
Pretty awesome.

All good suggestions.

Also Zantigo for Mexican.
You still have a Zantigo? This is like Land of the freaking Lost. Do you still have Burger Chef too? HFS I'm jealous.
No burger chef to as far as I know, but we have several Zantigos.

Whole lot of peeps from MN that apparently don't know about The West Side. :gangsigns:

West SideThe "West Side" neighborhood is actually in the eastern half of the city, to the south and across the Mississippi River from Downtown Saint Paul. It is called the West Side because it is on the west bank of the predominantly north-south river. It is adjacent to the suburban cities of South St. Paul and West St. Paul. The West Side is home to the largest Hispanic community in the Twin Cities,[5] centered along César Chávez Boulevard.
I work about half a mile from 6-12 good mexican joints.
Oh yeah I've driven through here before. Saw lots of mexi places but never ate there.

The best Mexi places are the ones in sketchy places. Sounds like you just like to stick to the milky white suburbs, college boy.

Well yeah.

Some good Peruvian in Minneapolis.
Best Turkish food I've had was there too. German/Polish places also very good.

Really lacking in pizza, Mexican, and sushi/Japanese though. Can't recall really good Indian either.
German/Polish is top notch if that's what you want. I'd put it up against anywhere in the country.

Pizza is actually great if you like midwest style.

I know of one really great middle-east place (Aida).

There are four US states I haven't been to: Both Dakotas (why do we need two?) and Alaska make sense. The fourth is Oregon. What the hell is the matter with me? On paper that state is made for me.(Thinking of this as I consider whether we can make the Oregon trip given a developing situation with the Nicaragua move.)
Working on plans to hit Portland in mid-August
Hmmm, would be August 2-10ish.

That's right around the time I'm looking at. But... I'll have my daughter with me, so I probably won't be doing many late night things. Has anyone ever brought their kid to a cornhole before??
yes, GM for blurry Mary pub crawl

Eh, I liked Punch and Green Mill. Thought Palumbo's and Pizza Luce were very overrated. My favorite place was actually right near where I lived in law school (off Snelling just south of the fairgrounds), but I forgot its name and I think it closed.

Growing up near NY spoiled me I think. Just didn't like the pizza in MN. Although its better than the crap in Arizona (save Pizzeria Bianco).
None of those are "midwest style."
Please enlighten me then. Never heard of this "midwest" style.

I'm also acting under the impression that the midwest does not have any style to speak of.

Midwest styleVariations, I believe, are found throughout the Midwest--from Ohio to Milwaukee to Chicago to wherever. I'd even go so far as to say that the "Chicago-style" pizza just above is really a variation of "Midwest-style." The Midwest style is round (but not always; see Maria's), thin, very crisp yet tender-flaky, and is party- or tavern-cut into the grid. Sauces and topping preference may differ from city to city and region to region, but this style seems to crop up often in the heartland.

lol, she'll have just turned 7. You'd be more than welcome to bring Coop, but Little Zooks (his son, not his penis) has already laid claim to my daughter for the first intra-GMTAN marriage

Has Tanner ever actually cornholed anyone?
I've never met any other FBGs in person if that's what you're asking.

Doesn't count. Knew dickey moe before FBG.

I was in the same town as him once and tried to meet up but he claimed he had been drinking or some such nonsense.

Wat. Was this the time you were in B-Town and yet failed to notify me ahead of time?

I hate to acknowledge or agree with Woz, but I don't know of a "midwest" style either.
I'd consider "midwest style" to be of the Ronnally's/Carbone/Savoy/Donatelli variety. It's usually square and has more cheese than in other parts of the country.
Funny, my dad worked there when he was in high school.

I've had Savoy. I know what you're describing. It's just okay.
