GM's thread about nothing (18 Viewers)

Why is the entire twitter verse all about sharknado?
Can someone explain wtf this is?
Until just now, I thought it was a movie coming out in the theaters, like Snakes on a Plane. When I saw all the posts about 'countdown' I thought we genuinely had people in here lining up in theaters to watch this tonight at midnight. :bag: Frosty? I'd expect him to do it. But Kev and YSR? Was very confused.

The fact that it was on some cable station and not a theater makes much more sense now, though I still can't understand opting to watch it voluntarily. I mean, absent any nudity, of course.

My PC has the herp. There is no cure. I've already tried everything you're about to suggest, and it either didn't find it, or running it caused a shutdown. Symantec calls it Boot.pihar, but it also tells me it fixes it on startup. Every time. Can't even update Windows. I was going to book Vegas airfare next week, but it looks like I'll be shopping for a laptop instead. Thoprawishes are appreciated.
Have you PM'ed duffman?
Kev - my 2 cents...

1) Your computer is likely infected and Symantec is worthless.

2) If you can, download RKILL and install it on your computer. Your infected computer might block to install, so if need be, download it onto a neutral computer and put it on a flash/thumb drive.

Q) Do the very same for Malwarebytes, which is the best free defender out there for computer herp.

3) Run your infected computer in safe mode. Do this by restarting your computer and banging on the F8 Key like Guster might a stranger's anoooos.

4) Once in safe mode, install both RKILL and Malwarebytes.

5) Once RKILL is installed, run it and be patient.

6) Once Malwarebytes is installed UPDATE it and run it (do a full scan). Do not BUY the premium, just roll with the free version and update it regularly. It's tops.

7) Restart your computer.

8) Uninstall symantec. It's garbage and you don't need to be paying for it if you are currently. Same goes for Macafee. Utter garbage.

9) Download, install, update and run CCleaner. This is a sweet little tool that will clean your registry, among other things. Think of this product like the mouthwash at the end of a dental visit. RKILL = Flossing, Malwarebytes = Brushing and CCLeaner = post rinse gargle.

RKILL only needs to be employed if you think you've caught the herp. But I'd suggest updating Malwarebytes and CCleaner weekly for now to ensure you remain clean and then monthly once you feel like you've safely gotten over the hump.

I wish my LinkedIn job title was as interesting sounding as Guster's. :kicksrock:
the ladies at my work are currently arguing whether Colin Firth or Matthew MacFadyen was the better Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice

i think that's my cue to go to lunch
Firth, FTW.

I wish my LinkedIn job title was as interesting sounding as Guster's. :kicksrock:
and the job is actually more interesting than the title would suggest
"Today's curriculum involves napping until lunch..."

I'm usually amazed at how many FFA threads other people read. Keeping up with this one and a couple others seems like it takes most of my free time.

Anyway, I guess he reported the thread himself and asked for it to be deleted.
I think you are confused. None of us use our free time to keep up with this thread. Free time is for drinking and golf and stuff. We keep up with the FFA during "work" time.

I only made it through about 9 minutes. Then I decided to lose money in online poker. Sharknado would have been the better ending to my night.

I want to thank everyone who tried to be helpful. Even GM. ;)

As I said, I've tried all of your suggestions already, with two exceptions. I was not familiar with the RKill product, so I ran that, and predictably, Malwarebytes and CCleaner found nothing. Again. Also, Avast was ineffective. Norton Power Eraser says it found it, and all I have to do is let it erase Word, Excel, PowerPoint and FindFast. The last two I can do without, but....

Drifter>I am a cheap SOB who bought a reconditioned HP Pavilion. Windows was installed, but there is no disc to re-install it.

As I type, my hard drive is working furiously. On something. It will either crash again soon, or 20-ton doors on a missile silo outside of Minot, SD will slowly slide open.

Love everything about this song. Good songs you can sing along to. Great songs take you somewhere else.

This is a great song.
Agree. I would love the chance to introduce them on stage at a private event at the Austin City Limits theater. Maybe I will make that happen on Wednesday night around 8:30.
With John Stamos?
No Stamos, unfortunately.

Then it probably ain't the herp. RKILL will terminate ANY processes that are running that shouldn't be - did you download it from the infected computer or download it from a neutral computer and then install it into the infected one with a flash drive? Could make a difference. And it has to be done in Safe Mode. An updated free version of Malwarebytes is going to catch anything Herp related so long as you've RKILLed the process in Safe Mode and run an updated scan.

And I'd uninstall ALL other anti-virus related products entirely before doing what I suggest above. Get 'em out of there. Uninstall Norton, Avast, MacAfee...get 'em out. THEN do the RKILL et al steps again.

Also, have you tried a system restore? Could try that later....a program suggesting you delete any of the Windows Office Suite is pointing you in the VERY wrong direction.

So I go over to my mom's to help her set up the Kindle we got for her 7 MONTHS AGO.

It wasn't my idea to give it to her. Her tech skills make GM look like Charles Babbage.

Anyway the Kindle thing went pretty well. I showed her how to "check out" ebooks from the county library and how to buy books with her Amazon account.

Then she wanted me to show her how to use Facebook on the Kindle (oh, I showed her how to find wifi hot-spots too).

So I get Facebook set up and I notice the little notification icon . She's got 72 notifications.

She's been on Facebook for over 2 years and never clicked on that icon once. She had no idea what it did.
