GM's thread about nothing (19 Viewers)

I talked to Thorn earlier in the week and we discussed the great NE January cornhole of aught 14.

We decided to have Homer find us a nice house to rent in the Montauk the Hamptons for the week of New Years.

Who else wants in?

My wife is having a rough patch with my mom too. :hifive:
After 5-1/2 years together, I just met Mr. krista's mom for the first time. I can't recommend this approach enough.

(Actually I liked his mom.)

:lmao:

Which exact dates?

You just met your in laws?
I had met my father-in-law once. Had not met my mother-in-law or brother-in-law until this weekend.
Does your husband have a good relationship with them?

Part of the stress on my side is that I get along great with my wife's family. They are laid back and like to drink beer and understand their daughter is a complicated person. Wife gets furious because her parents often take my side on things instead of hers. :) . On the flip side my parents adore my wife but they are not people that are direct and open and don't discuss tough things in the open.

He has a good relationship with his parents, but did I mention they live in Weirton, WV? ;) He had described it to me, but it was much more depressing than I imagined. He just really doesn't like to go there, and I understand why.

We've tried to get his parents to visit and have offered to pay to fly them to Chicago and then later to Memphis, but his mom is a little agoraphobic. His dad came to a Super Bowl party we threw (the marching band one), and stayed for a few days, which was really cool, but his mom was just nervous about leaving I think. They swore up and down that they'll visit us in Nicaragua--we'll see.

His mother missed his wedding?
Everyone other than he and I missed our wedding. We didn't do that kind of thing.
Got it. Good luck. Adulthood makes family relationships strange. I hope my kids always want a good relationship with me, and I with them.
:lmao: We don't all live in Texas.

His parents got married in a funeral home, so they were totally happy for us not to have some silly big wedding. Theirs was just about the best wedding I've heard of.

I have a wedding in Boston the 28th of Dec. I'd like to stay around another week or so. Somewhere in that window.

Proninja to the courtesy phone

We are starting to implement cycling into the AO experience. I have 4-5 $400-500 bikes (when new, 5-7 years old now, but very lightly used and recently tuned and new tubes all around), kind of cruise type 5-10 speeds. I think I get a few of them at Costco.

We have a 3 mile neighborhood loop, a 3 mile concrete bike only velo trail about 5 miles away, the ~10 mile hike/bike trail around Ladybird Lake and another 10 mile hike/bike trail up around Barton Creek.

I want to add a couple more bikes to the stable that would be suitable and reliable for these ventures.Being fairly bulletproof is the primary criteria, other than being able to gear down and make it up the frequent hills.

Secondly, I have a Ford Flex. I can transport seven people and would like to carry along seven bikes. What's the easiest, most convenient way to do this. I was thinking about getting a cargo rooftop carrier, thinking we could stack the in on top of each other with something like this. Think that would wok? The commute would be local roads and we would not have to get on any high\ways, so we would not be going very fast. Also, security is not much of an issue, as we would be in the car whenever the bike are in/on it.

Keep in mind that we are still pretty poor, but the prognosis is getting better.

Hey Chicago peeps - anything cool to do during the day this Saturday? Are the White Sox worth checking out? Any brewery tours? Anything else?

ETA: I know the Sox suck, but I meant the ball park experience

My son caught Chris Davis' 37th home run ball in the left field stands at Camden Yards yesterday. It hit the concrete aisle way down in the section and bounced right to him about 15 rows further up.

Why does it feel like the destination wedding trend is getting worse? My best buddy in college is getting married at a 4-5 start resort in the DR in the high season. To go to this wedding with my wife it will run 2,000 just for the plane tickets and another at least 400/night. Who wants to make their friends drop a cool 3-4Gs to come to their wedding that they would otherwise have moved mountains to go to in the states?
had a friend threaten our friendship because i would not fly to Poland for 10 days :(

weddings make people lose their heads
Tell him you're starting to hide money for him.
Told him I'm 90% out. I think the responses he's gotten from this are overwhelmingly negative. He's one of, if not the last of people my age to be getting married. Most of us all have young kids now.

Seems dumb unless he just doesn't really want to mess with a bunch of people coming, which after talking to him again seems plausible. At one point he was talking south beach or pensacola area which would have been cheaper/easier.

Oh well.

There's probably no good way to say, "This is all about us and, while it would be nice if some of you can come, we don't really give a #### if you can't make it."

fwiw: I think that's the right approach, so long as you don't try to guilt people into coming, REALLY don't give a #### if they don't make it, and aren't expecting presents. They should have the wedding they want to have.

Half Acre gives a decent tour and makes great beer.

White Sox pretty meh
Agreed on Half Acre. Could also do Revolution.

Half Acre doesn't do food, but have no problem with you bringing some in

Revolution's brewpub does have food, but if you want to tour, the brewery itself is about a mile away. Haven't eaten at Revolution, but have heard good things about their menu and the brewpub itself is a really nice place.

Think Pitchfork music festival is this weekend.

Sox - atmosphere will suck since that's exactly what the team does. Nice park, decent beer selection, maybe best ballpark food in MLB. If you go, make sure you get 100 level seats. Those include bleachers, which are cheap. Not being able to walk the concourse is worse than the team on the field.

My child, smart and beautiful and perfect as she is, has deemed daytime to be sleepytime - to the point where I sometimes have to wake her up after 3-4 hours in order to feed her. During the nighttime, however, it's every 1.5-2 hours. It's getting pretty brutal.

I'm all for letting her cry a little longer in order to "sleep train" her, but when she stirs she makes these horrific grunting/wheezing noises as if she's choking. So even though I am right next to her (she's in a bassinet, we are not co-sleeping) and I know she's breathing okay, I am still completely tuned in to her every breath right now. She's three weeks old and I probably slept a total of about 3 hours last night.

We go to the pediatrician on Tuesday and I am going to ( :nerd: ) hopefully have some audio of these noises on my phone so that the doctor can tell me whether I can ignore them or not.

Otherwise, she rules.

In other news, my MIL thinks I hate her and has made a point of not coming to our house when I'm here and has let everyone know as much. It's really cool.
Ooof, sorry GB. There's a bit of that going on with my mom and wife too right now and it is the pitts. Especially considering it was a large factor in my divorce. Until they clear the air and talk, I'm being encouraged not to let my daughter near my mom. Anyhow, if Romo needs an ear to bend, he can phone me as I've been through it once before and am smack dab in the middle of it again. Ugh.

Oh, and guess who's baby had her very first taste of chicken today? Vegetarian mom goes out of town, baby turns into a carnivore. MOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAAAA HAAA HAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
Is she a vegetarian for health or moral reasons?
More the latter than the former, though she just never really enjoyed meat/pork/poultry when she did eat it. She stopped eating it in college and never went back (also cheaper to cut out meat/poultry). She does, however, eat fish so we eat fresh fish quite a bit. She also makes her grandmother's family pasta sauce with a big old chuck roast in the middle of the giant pot of red sauce that simmers for hours. She tried making it without the chuck roast and it didn't taste the same to her. The boys and I will cut it up and eat it with her pasta and then the rest I take to work for sandwiches. Win/win.

Did you test the ball for steroids?

How's your overall health? Actually, just answer me this: do you think you will out-live SLB? Just trying to plan out my future nuptials.

Last check up revealed cholesterol under 200 (183) and blood pressure at 120/80. 10 pounds of weight loss, liver, kidney and all other metrics used to diagnose this sack of bones all normal. I haven't had a fever in several years. Never catch the flu, don't get prolonged colds, have successfully beat back allergies without relying on pills. I poop every single morning at the exact same time and I sleep like a baby kitten nestled in Tanner's ample bosom.

That said I'm a giant risk to do something very stupid and fatal at any point in time, so I'd continue to monitor.

So not a strict vegetarian?

It wouldn't surprise me if Davis (or any MLB player) is juicing, and I've no particular interest in the Orioles one way or another. I want to believe the guy, though.

He's juicing. And he's getting 80 million this winter. Both are true.
He's under club control through 2015, so Angelos definitely isn't giving him $80 million this winter. So that one's false.

Other one is up for debate. But he did hit 38 MLB HRs in less than 700 at-bats by the age of 23. So this year's numbers at least have some grounding in reality. Now don't say anything else bad about a Baltimore sports guy, or Ray Lewis will come stab you (allegedly).

Is there a way to search for cheap airfare on certain dates from a certain city IF YOU DON'T CARE WHERE YOU GO?

For example, I have a weekend free coming up, want to go somewhere and just explore. Don't care too much where, just want to get there affordably.
