Visited ATL twice during the last couple years on business. Great place. Lovely people. Amazing food, and bands play there.

That said, I've never been to Savannah or NO. I'm like 100% Northerner, but I really had a great time there.

You can also get a goodly amount of house for your money in ATL, relative to most other metropolitan areas in the US.

So just to be clear...it would be nice to use the "sick cat" excuse to move back. Well, maybe not nice, as we might seem like crazy cat people, but at least easier.

There are lots of reasons not to stay, but the most urgent is the sick cat problem. If not for him, we'd probably stay another couple of months but would still get back. As it is, we'll come back end of September and station in Atlanta until we figure out a next move. Mr. krista has good connections there .that should score an interesting job, though his best connections would be in New Orleans. Other than the stress on the cats (yes, apparently we're crazy), I don't mind taking a bit of time to check things out and find a great location. Totally understand the negative thoughts on Savannah and could see that being an issue. We liked that it was beautiful and had great history, architecture and food.

At this point would just like a place with decent weather and a not-crazy COL. Mr. krista was heavily in favor of the Pacific NW, but I fear the COL and general dreariness (as opposed to malaise). Open to DC, Austin, Denver and a few other spots but ATL seems a leading contender right now.

Is it? I guess I was thinking of Seattle pricing, which is pretty insane (more than Chicago was). Even with the rain/dreariness, I'd be really into Portland.

ETA: The Oakland hills are a really great value for the kid-free. Maybe that's a relative term, but if you're not hung up on having 3000 sq. ft., you can get a cool house with a bonkers view at a pretty reasonable price.

Damn, that is so true.

We liked it a lot, but I fear the smallness you mention, too. Seemed like a great scene but could get old quickly? The plus is that it's so close to Atlanta we could move there easily if it didn't work. I also like that we could live on an island (Tybee, Wilmington, others), not that we necessarily would.

It is not surprising, I"m sure, to hear that I am totally confused about what I want. Definitely thankful that I have the ability to #### around and try to figure it out, though. :/

GPJ, just saw your edit. One of the things that's been a huge positive about this experience is realizing how little we need, in terms of space and stuff. In fact, how little we WANT. I don't want another 5000 sq ft house and would really like a nice cozy space. Targeting 1800 ft or so, like a 2 BR. So the Oakland Hills could work really well.

1) The weather kicks the #### out of nearly every other place's weather. Hot weather is for #######s, as is snow.

2) Plenty of really good restaurants just on this side of the (brand new!) bridge alone, never mind SF. And a chef (I would imagine) would miss the worst of the commute if you drove in to SF, assuming you leave mid-afternoon.

3) If...IF, for whatever godforsaken reason you want to jump back in to werk, plenty of options there for what you do.

If you're seriously considering DC, I would jump in the dedicated thread with any specific questions (neighborhoods, etc..). Bunch of FBGs live in and close (scooby, Tobias, Don Q, DC Thunder, and more) and are a great resource.

As for the area in general, COL will be on the high side compared to places like ATL. The weather is more variable, too - though no more extreme than Chicago. It's extremely diverse, with a large thriving arts/food/cultural scene. From what I'm told, DC has one of the best Metro systems in the country (& is steadily being expanded) which is good because traffic sucks.

For sports, you have the 4 majors plus Baltimore right up the road with the Ravens/Os. The college sports scene is nothing like it is in the south & midwest - much smaller, more diluted (many there are from somewhere else and root for other teams), and more fair-weather.

Coming back to the US.

Atlanta, Savannah, and New Orleans are the contenders right now.

Why Atlanta?

OK, we're going there as an initial stop because, well, that's where we come in from Delta. But I kind of like Atlanta. We've discovered some interesting, diverse neighborhoods there, the food scene is good, like the weather, LOVE that there's a great airport there as being in Memphis made us long for a real airport again. It has all four sports. I don't know...seems to have a lot going for it.

For culture/history, though, might be lacking, which is why other places are beckoning too.

I hear ya. I lived in ATL for about 2 years (2003-4), and I probably didn't give it as much of a chance as I should have. My BIL has lived there since '98 and he said it's changed alot (for the better) culture wise.....and he's a die hard New Orleanean. My biggest complaints about ATL was that it had no identity (nobody is actually from there...hence not giving a crap about sports) and the traffic. Assume you would probably live in the middle of everything, so that cuts down on the traffic issue a bit.

I'm obviously extremely biased to New Orleans....and the 4 biggest negatives that I hear about the city are (1) crime (2) heat (3) education (4) corrupt politics. You've lived in Memphis, so #1 (hi GM ) and #2 shouldn't bother you...and since your cats don't need schooling, #3 is moot. I think #4 is getting better...but I could be wrong. Now all that being said, I think NOLA is truely the most unique city in the country. Great food, culture, music, nightlife, people in general. But from your previous posts, I'm not telling you anything you don't know.

Also, went to the Jesuit/Lake Oswego HS Football game on Friday. Two of the whitest, richest schools in the state squaring off on a nice summer evening. The shorts have gotten much shorter since I was 17. All I could think of was "Thank god I don't have a daughter".

Oh, wait....

This year the school district put the hammer down when it comes to short-shorts. Bottom hem of the shorts cannot be higher than the tips of the fingers if a girl puts her hands down to her sides.

So far it is working very well (sorry, Homer). Of course there are some really sluttily dressed T-Rexs running around.
