GM's thread about nothing (40 Viewers)

Oh, I forgot when I #####ed about my daughter having to sell stupid crap for her school. It's private school (yes, look at me). We already pay tuition, have to kick in extra for field trips and other events, and they have a pretty high-pressure auction every year.

Why the hell is my daughter walking around in the rain trying to sell cookies and wrapping paper?
It's what Jesus would have wanted?
what would Jesus shill?

Anything worse than your kid having to try to shill crap door to door for a school fundraiser?
Yes: hitting up your coworkers to buy crap your kid is selling for a school fundraiser. Seriously. Send that little ####er door-to-door and get him accustomed to the hustle.
I've got one for you guys.

An old friend of my is trying to fund raise for his new business. He wants to open a cajun catering truck.

The guy is actually an amazing chef but one of the most unreliable, tempermental people I know. I stopped keeping track of how many jobs he's had about 20 jobs ago. He's 44 but still has not figured out that having a job means doing what other people tell you to do. His biggest problem is that he's pretty damn smart and he just can't understand why he might have to take orders for someone who isn't as smart as he is. On top of that he's never ran his own business before.

His catering truck idea isn't a bad one but I'd rather just give the guy $13 and tell him to spend it on beer. If he actually gets this thing going I'd give even money it won't last 6 months.
Disaster waiting to happen. I once had a business partner that thought the whole point of owning a business was to delegate the work to everyone else and watch the $ roll in. He was constantly starting new things in an effort to make easy money...BBQ sauce gift baskets, tree removal, house restoration. The moment he generated a dollar he would go spend it on something stupid and then "hire" someone to boss around to keep the work up while he sat around doing nothing.

One time, he and a buddy got in to candle making and figured out a process to make huge candles. Like, three foot tall and 10 inches in diameter. The kind of stuff you see at pottery barn and pier 1 but really high quality, great colors, etc. They got a kiosk at the mall during Christmas for $3k and sold out of every candle they made, every day for the first two weeks. And these things were not cheap, like $200 a piece. And they were selling them at the mall as fast as they could make them. So what did he do the week right before Christmas? He hired his dope smoking buddy to work the kiosk and went home. Of course the dude was late the first two days and the mall booted them from the spot. And instead of saying "we've got a good thing, we need to figure out how to get the word out!" They folded up shop because "the ten hour days are killing me and I can't find anyone else to make the candles..."

Anyway, good luck to your friend in finding another job in 6 months.

No. And I refuse to do it.

me - $100 dollars of candy in that box?

wife - yes

me - I'll write a check.
This will be me.

Well, actually I'll do nothing and my wife will try really hard and then I'll write the $87 check at the last moment to get to $100.

Hi sweetie, love ya!
You don't think I can sell $87 worth of popcorn/wrapping paper/wreaths/cookie dough/whatever other crap kids sell these days?

You thought wrong.

I accept your challenge.

Actually, it appears that he doesn't think you can sell $14 worth.

Door to door wine sales sounds like a pretty decent fundraiser.

Jesus man, Jesus is selling a whole new way of life, man. You just give him all of your land and sell all of your stuff because you don't need it. It's great. We're all together, laughing and singing and making friends. It's a real community where we share and love one another. And whatever we don't have Jesus's old man will provide!

Just got a call telling me they're taking Mark off the ventilator in the next 24 hours. There's no treatment available for what is attacking his lungs, and his lungs and kidneys are now shutting down.

Feel like I'm going to vomit.

I sold 3 cases to some kid just the other day.

To be a little more upbeat, I share, primarily for Tanner, this story from Mr. krista's Facebook yesterday:

"Me and another dude in the lobby of a xxxxx Suites in ATL quietly enjoying free beer and watching Jeopardy.

Then Alex Trebek says "This penguin-like bird was thought to have gone extinct by 1884."

So dude in the lobby drains his beer in one big gulp, slams the glass on the table and says "WHAT IS THE GREAT ####### AUK, ALEX." And stomps off without bothering to find out if he was right.

He was. I nearly applauded."

My boss two seconds ago on the phone with a big swinging wang in the uranium business: "Hey, when you raid the whore house, you take the piano player too". God I love this guy. I sure he doesn't have to fire me at year end. :(

Soccer practice cancelled, fields a swamp, rain still coming down. Wife's two lovely unmarried friends coming over tonight for dinner, one bringing her 12 year old daughter whom I THINK my formerly gay son has a little crush on. Bringing my recently divorced neighbor friend over for male reinforcement as these three gals are of the strong HEAR ME ROAR woman variety (which I actually enjoy). One of them is Bosnian, but moved her as a kid to avoid genocide. Smart gal. Has an advanced degree in anti-terrorism or some such. Also likes Brazilian dancing, bikinis and showing off her butt.

Me? On top of getting good and loaded? I'm cooking burgers on the grill for 'em all. Going back to an old favorite of mine. Will work in some crumbled feta and fresh basil from my garden in with the ground beef avec some other spices - red pepper flakes, black pepper, cumin, paprika maybe some Tony's I dunno - might even throw an egg in there. I can't think of many things that smell better than freshly chopped basil. Maybe the girl in the Tom Petty video?
I thought you ate vegetarian or something?

Sounds good, when should stop by?
No, that's wife. But thankfully she eats fish, so we try to eat that at least once a week. I've gotten quite adroit at blackening/grilling salmon. Make my own dry rub that I think is outstanding. Lot of rock fish too, which doesn't taste like much, but man, when fresh and paired up with the right flavoring, it is good eating. Point I'm crawling towards is that no f'n way am I a vegetarian, but because the wife sort of is, we don't eat much red meat/burgers. Which should extend my miserable life by a few days or so.

Also, the burgers might have been my best effort ever. I used a shot of Bushmills in 'em. Big hit.

Back in the primordal-ooze days (ca. 1999) of on-line dating, I met a woman through Yahoo personals who was Hungarian and now living in D.C. She was one of the very few who could/would post a picture on her profile. Her picture made it hard to see her face through the cig smoke, but we started chatting and it moved to talking on the phone in a day or two (warp-speed in those days). She had a REALLY thick accent, made stained-glass art for a living, was always drunk and would say so, and about 10 years older than me.

Talking to her on the phone was like conversing with Marlene Detreich imitating Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat".

"Bill! Do you SMOKE?!"

"Bill! What BRAND?!"

"Bill! Are you of an artistic MIND?!"

"Bill! I am DRUNK!!"

I can't recall how it petered out (probably because we were both drunks), but we never met face to face. I have a feeling I'd have been dead somewhere around 2002 if we had gotten together.
"Bill! Do you like CAMPING!?!"

Kev > I put San Diego into the starting lineup as they get the Raiders this week. Felt that was a better match-up than Indy or Cle.

Going with 2 QBs again this week. CJ and Trent with the rock. Boldin and Cruz to receive. Do you want to sub James Jones in?
Play Cleveland imo
Kev, you make the call here. I'm ambivalent.
Pryor back for the Raiders, not as good a play. Plus, defenses generally play better at home. Went with Bobby Sac's recommendation here. Love you, though.

That is a great quote. I'm not sure I know what it means but I'm going to start using it right next to some of my other favorites like "your raise becomes effective as soon as you do".

Just googled the quote. Makes sense. I need to find a way to work it in. Often.

Don't have time to catch up on the thread, and apologies if it's full of good news while I'll be a downer again. Remember early this year how 1/3 of my employees had cancer? Well the worst of them was my friend Mark who had an aggressive leukemia. He was diagnosed in January and hasn't been back to work...chemo then stem cell transplant then more of everything. He was doing better after all that but after one week at home was admitted to the hospital again and is in ICU. Spots on his lungs and inability to keep oxygen saturation at an appropriate level. He's on a ventilator and I don't know the prognosis but it ain't great.

50 years old, great guy with beautiful family. TPW for Mark appreciated.
Sorry GB. :(

It seems that way. Timmay has posted a ton in that thread as well. To be honest I just skim through to find any updates biggie has posted.

I think I've posted it before, but...

1 TBSB Brown Sugar

2 tsp Fresh Lemon Zest

2 tsp Onion Powder

2 tsp Garlic Powder

2 tsp Paprika

2 tsp Thyme

2 tsp black pepper (freshly ground and coarse is my preferred method)

2 tsp Tony's (or any salt...I like the extra kick of Tony's to anything else. It actually 'calls' for table salt, but that's boring)

1/2 tsp Cayenne (your mileage may vary)

1 tsp Cumin

1/2 tsp Nutmeg

That will make a lot of rubbing. I'll usually apply it by hand to a large sockeye or copper river if I can find it for the right price. Thankfully we have no shortage of fresh, wild caught salmon up here. Yum. So apply it liberally by hand and let it rest in the fridge or room temp for 30 minutes to an hour (longer in the fridge than RT obviously).

Then you know the rest. Get the grill to about 400ish and place the fish skin side down. Go about 3 minutes then CAREFULLY turn her over. Go about 3 minutes and if you're like me and want just a little more cooking, go skin side down another 2-3 minutes tops. Ready to go a few minutes after you take it off. Goes outstanding with some baked rice, grilled peppers or the tried and true Caesar salad, which was invented for blackened salmon, IMHO.
