GM's thread about nothing (52 Viewers)

Many interesting tidbits tonight which won't amuse anyone but me, but in aggregate made for a great evening for me.

Starting small, I bought some sliced cured pork shoulder, a bit of salami and a baguette and combined it with mustard, a creamy garlic herbed cheese and some oil and vinegar and had one of the best sandwiches I've eaten in months.

Prior to that, while stopping at the local market for the said antipasto I had a near transcendental experience. Last month I traded in my dear beloved truck for my slick, modern driving machine. I did this at a dealership about 15 miles north of Seattle. For those living in the western reaches of our great land, this is nothing. For those of us in the constrained reaches of the northwest (Seattle in particular) , that might as well be another state. After work today, after the market, I started walking towards my truck. The issue with that being, I did not have a truck anymore. After a moment of 4th dimensional displacement, I realized that I no longer had that truck but, nonetheless, that was indeed my much beloved friend. The small lift; the dent on the tailgate where I backed it into a tree in Canada. It was my baby in a spot where I had parked her many times before.

I decided to wait until her new master came out and approached him once I was sure he was the new owner. He was skeptical at first, but I quickly explained and established that he had just recently acquired my beloved even though the transaction had occurred far from our doorsteps. We talked and I was satisfied that my girl was now in good hands. Never in a city this side so siloed by neighborhoods would I ever imagine that I would run into my truck again, but it happened as described. Made my night, it did (arr).

Spent the rest of the night watching Pacific Rim which, considering my earliest TV memories are of Ultraman and The Lone Ranger somewhere around 1974, I thought was awesome.

It's not a good movie but I understood exactly where it was coming from. Picture a young blond and curlied drifter circa 1974 watching the 4 channels available in Bethlehem, PA. In the afternoons at 1:00 one of those channels showed The Lone Ranger followed by Ultra Man. Ultra Man was not good - it was, in fact, quite stupid. Guy in suit fought monster, got beat up and then, at the last minute, unveiled his cross hand laser beam of death. Why didn't he just zap the guy with that at the start? Because it entertained a 4 year old Drifter, that's why. That's what Pacific Rim was about. Anyone without that context of Japanese monster flicks and Ultraman would never get it, but for those of us who do, it was a nice modern rendition of a familiar refrain.

Anyone here know about federal inheritance taxes? Something coming down the pike I need to prepare for. Not life changing unfortunately, but a pleasant surprise.
Inheritance or estate?
Idunno. I am inheriting :moneybag: from a relative and was wondering about the tax implications so I can plan accordingly.
Florida doesn't have an inheritance tax.

The federal estate tax is pretty steep IF the combined gross assets and prior taxable gifts exceeds $5M (ETA: gets indexed every year, up to $5.34M in 2014). But the tax is paid by the estate, not you.

There is of course no impact on your state or federal return as you do not need to declare inheritance as income.

How was the night, oat? I'm up with our 10 week old.
Hey GB, hifive.

No throwing up last night, so that's a huge step in the right direction. I think we're out of the woods. She still isn't sleeping much, I think mostly due to her stomach. We're lucky if we get 2 consecutive hours. Sucks pretty hard. Wife and I haven't had a solid night of sleep in a while. It will pass eventually, but it's to the point that the sleep deprivation is making us all a little loopy right now. Our first was a regular baby, so yeah we didn't sleep a whole lot then, but it was normal new baby stuff. This is like what they do to folks un Guantanamo.

Yours any better?

Thank you. I researched this a little and by no means am I getting that kind of bankroll.

It seems high (for about 15 years from 2nd term Regan to the millennium it was $600-650K) but it's not uncommon for small business owners and farmers to hit that threshold.

Very cute "Where's Waldo"-type game for kids.

Find Momo is a hide-and-seek photo challenge starring Momo the adorable black and white dog. In this collection of photographs produced by Andrew Knapp, Momo is concealed within the Where’s Wally-style images. Eagle-eyed viewers have to look hard at each image to pick out the camouflaged border collie, who seems to blend seamlessly into the background.

The graphic designer originally produced the series of pictures as a gift for his nieces and nephews, and the scenes revolved around his hometown in Ontario, Canada.

In all the photos, the canine shows great patience and obedience to sit still long enough for his owner to capture the perfect shot. Can you find Momo in these 43 photos?

Great, I can't stop watching these now.

I hate you.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

They're pretty awesome.
Best parts might be him trying to read the ad copy/taglines for the sponsors:

"Broughtayouby....monk knee shudder whiskey....a cheeky union!"

Just watched his "Would you rather be Ron Jeremy or Peter North?" segment. His choice? "the guy who produced Elvis XXX."

Larry, you shine on, shining star.
Jeebus, what a trainwreck. :lmao:

He makes Kige Ramsey look like Sir Lawrence Olivier.

I just set up my moms iPad Air (which I bought her for Xmas and she never took out if the box). Holy crap this thing is fantastic. Way lighter/faster/easier to use than my iPad 3.

Hm, Olive Garden pronounces it "brusketta." Have I had this wrong my whole life, or is this just the way the Olive Garden crowd says this?
How'd it go with the doctor today?
Thx GBs. She gained weight which was a huge plus. Got her on a different formula and zantac prescription, he wants us to give it another day or two and see where it goes. So far she's seemingly doing a lot better today. Tonight will be the real test. God would I love sleep. This house has been nutso.
Sorry you're going through this. My sister's oldest (now almost 6) had serious gastro problems for the first year until they could figure it out. She's fine now.

I'll try to get more info from her if you like. It was really distressing for a while as the kid would be in great discomfort and they didn't know how to help her.

I know I've mentioned the annual trivia contest thing in here numerous times.

I guess there was some doubt as to the tournament being held this year. It's a fundraiser for the Cal State soccer team and the coach that organizes the contest just left for greener pastures. Turns out they're still doing it.

I get this email the other day from the old professor of mine that serves as the team "captain". She said that although they are having the contest this year she was considering not putting a/our team together this year.

Her reason? Because we've won the last 3 years in a row and "the lousy reception our consecutive victories" gets from the other teams. :lmao:

Then she asked what everybody else thought. I just politely replied with "I think we play again this year and continue to try our hardest". I was tempted to call her a Communist and ask "did the mother-jumping 1980s Lakers sit out a year? Do you think John Wooden 'called off the dogs' because people grew tired of watching UCLA win? Not sure about you but I want to be the G-D Dan Gable of 'The Brains of Bakersfield'".

Still not sure if we're going to have a team or not. If she doesn't want to enter this year I'll put myself on the market as a free agent. I won't settle for less than my entry fee ($40) and at least 20 drink tickets.
"Sounds like we need to increase our gloating this year to expose the sore, whiney losers."

Please don't trivialize their feelings.
