If the niece is coming with just her kids, I don't see what the big problem is. Poor girl probably hasn't caught much of a break for most of her life, and now has a chance to get away and spend a week with family and relax. I dunno, just the way I see it.

Did you have an empty bedroom, or did you plan on your kids or someone else being in that 4th bedroom?

Seems like the easiest play is to let your sister know that the 4th room is already being used and that there really just isn't room for anyone else. See if there are other rental houses nearby and helpfully suggest she could rent one of those if she really wants her daughter to be there with the grandkids.

Tend to agree here. Some other things:

1) I'm assuming that since this is a rental there is a strict NO SMOKING policy in place. If there is not, create one.

2) If your sister invited her family, she should be paying their room & board. Right? Maybe start canvassing the area for hotels/motels/rentals that are close by that the same $$$ owed to you can now be owed to somebody else.

3) Now would be a great time to put an ad on CL seeking a hot single mom of young kids who wants a free vacation with the only caveat being that she pretends you are her BF.

1. No issue on smoking. Off property only. My house, my rules.

2. Weekly rentals start around $2,500 (saw one for $1,500 recently, thought about snagging it for them, but gone in 60 seconds or so). My big sister is solidly middle class, I like to treat her when I am able to, so...not really on the table.

Full disclosure: my sister did actually ask if it was OK, via email. AFTER she invited her daughter. So, basically I'm in a corner here. I haven't responded yet.

Yeah, that would have been my answer 10-15 years ago. Since mom passed, I go a little easier. My family sees me about once every two years. It would be a tough one to smooth over.

That said, she's reasonable. She knows her adult kid is a handful, and I think she would reason through it with me. I'm sympathetic that she doesn't get to see her daughter or grandkids much, so again, I might enjoy facilitating that. But I'm wary because it's not just me. This is (I think) more about my kids and what I want to potentially expose them to.

Anyway, thanks all. Appreciate being able to write this out and get some other perspectives.

Actually, it's gonna be a blast. My sisters are a riot. Last vacation we took together (Philly/Gettysburg) my sides were sore for days. They're a little crazy (in the good way), witty, caustic, and are both fantastic to my kids.

I was kinda losing interest with each date and pretty much lost all interest after the banging. I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Colorado for a few days and yesterday she called me out (via text) for being distant and putting her off. I feel bad, she's very nice person. We're going to get together next week to "talk".

I remember what a sweet little girl my niece was. She's had a ton of issues to overcome, and keeping her baby when she was 15 might not have been the wisest choice, but dayum, how can you expect someone who was adopted to turn their back on their own kid. Now she's dirt poor, no car, moves a lot, works as a bartender at a Japanese steak house, raising 3 kids by herself.

The girl needs a break.

Also, you and your son can bond by making fun of them.

Discovered a tiny little Thai restaurant last night that might have the best Thai food I've ever had. I ordered take-out last night and when I pulled into this hole in the wall, there was a sign out front facing the parking lot. She is right..her English is not very good but her food is very very great. Had Thai pumpkin curry...oh man, the flavor was just astounding.

In our main league, we just agreed to add two minor league spots in a fairly close vote. One of the guys who was vehemently against it bid on and won Springer ($6), who I really wanted. And not just because he went to burgeoning college baseball power The University of Connecticut ("We've got Mike Olt too!").

Really tempted to post on Facebook that today we lost one of our nation's greatest poets and writers, and including a picture of Malcolm Glazer.

Best Thai restaurant in Houston is a place called Asia Market. It's in a pretty rough part of town and consists of maybe eight tables for two wedged into an... Asian market. Some place you'd never venture in to if you did not know the restaurant was there, but man that #### is good.
