A few weeks ago, I made some very unflattering remarks about Seattle and its surrounding areas. I portrayed it as a boring, dull, lifeless hellscape that nobody in their right mind would ever visit, let alone live in. I also stated that the only interesting thing to do there was watching guys throwing fish and going up and down an elevator in the Space Needle.

I poked in and out, just enough to see him say that he's a workaholic and that he will be making changes in his life accordingly. It was a ice reminder for those "rat race" folks.

Yeah, especially this time of year when my daughter's spending days in summer camp, I can't help but think about spending my own summer days at home, with my mom and extended family or roaming the neighborhood having fun (and often just being bored) with my friends.

How do you balance that desire for more time with them and giving them those kinds of experiences against the ability to give them other advantages in life and having two parents who are career driven? That was never really an option for my mom. Or my wife's. We're not exactly 7 day a week workers, like he's referencing, but even 5 days a week of being gone before they get up every morning and home not long before bedtime feels like it's too much time missed. Especially after reading something like that.

sure. do you need a reference or something or just a name? if you just need the easiest to navigate so you can get in and out quickly I'd go down to Kent and the regional justice center--much less busy than the main courthouse in Seattle. Judge McDermott has the easiest courtroom to deal with.

Ham's update is pretty devastating. I don't get what the hospital did. The progression just seems insane. Horrible.

Now it has me all ####ed up. Preggo Jenkins has had some new symptoms pop up the last week/days. She's ~36 weeks. The dr is making her come in for testing tomorrow to make sure it isn't pre-eclampsia or HELLP. Both ungood for her and baby. Hopefully its nothing. But these docs have barely spent time with her or reviewed medical records from when we moved. For example, they just told her last week that her iron level is low -- based in testing from march when we moved.

I believe I just felt a twinge of empathy for lawyers. It was fleeting so I can't be sure.

I couldn't eat dinner tonight thinking about Chad and his family.

My daily routine is to leave for work around dawn. I have a nanny/cook who arrives at 6 to cook Chloe breakfast - invariably, pancakes - and I cut out around 4 or 5 to pick up my daughter from Afterschool. Left early today. Her teacher was there organizing - I rarely see her since I don't do drop off and dismissal is a few hours before I normally pick up - so I took pictures of her and my daughter. Pretty terrific K teacher, really lucky. Instead of heading straight home I let her play in the sprinklers in the park for 90 minutes. Threw off the nightly routine but I didn't care. She got to bed later than normal. Instead of me reading, she wanted to read aloud (she's moved up several levels and she's pretty proud she can read beyond sight words now). Such a sweet girl.

Called my 15 y.o. son and talked WC for 45 minutes.

Then I cried. A lot.

Ham's son is a pretty spot-on reenactment of a client I had about a decade ago, though. One of those cases you drink thinking about for the rest of your career.

Been thinking Ham's post all night. I'm a big believer in "nobody wishes they worked more when they were dead". But the balance like you point out is tough.
