GM's thread about nothing (25 Viewers)

Went to the pre-season meeting for my kid's soccer team this year. The head coach is younger than me, and is an Anglo marriage and family therapist with a high-pitched voice. His wife is Americanized Japanese and he introduced his two boys by name, and they've both got distinctly Japanese first names, which tells you who wears the kimono in the family.

We got a kid with a nut allergy so naturally my go-to team snack of granola bars that I can buy a large box of and have plenty left over for breakfast for me is out the ####### window right off the bat. We can't just schedule a practice time and day of the week based upon parent availability because the fields are insured for particular days and teams, and so we'll get assigned to whatever day the AYSO gods decide for us.

We moved soccer regions because last year's sucked. My kid's team was coached by some Indian-American (dot, not feather) who felt pretty accomplished because he could accurately identify a soccer ball as being round. It was the least productive season in any sport I've ever been around as either a kid or a parent.

So yeah, yay youth sports!

The suite at the game today was nice. There were no FSN girls though. Lots of free beer and food. Just brats/dogs and chips and stuff but it was free and tasty. The suite was the first one off from behind the plate down the third base line - great view - and next to the team owner's suite. We had a foul ball come up into the seat but it literally hit a guy right in the hands without him even moving and he didn't have the decency to drop it. I was less than 3 feet away. Still haven't ever caught a ball despite going to around one billion games. I don't think he even properly understood how lucky he was. I thought about killing him a little.

Disco Stu: Really enjoyed you and your son's Ice Water Challenges. Just out of pure curiosity...are you going to be posting a video of your wife getting ice-cold water poured all over her?

Should've tackled him

I've never caught a foul ball at a baseball game. Granted I think I've been to about 3 MLB games in my life and maybe 10-12 minor league games. Can someone explain the excitement behind catching a foul ball?

So I was excused from jury duty today. They settle on the jurors and I didn't even get close to the box (sounds like the last date-night with my wife!)

I just googled the defendant's name and read up on his case. He was up for 1 count of murder and 2 counts of attempted murder...all 3 on separate dates. There were 2 other people charged along with this guy in the murder case. One plead guilty to first degree murder and the other was found guilty of the same about 2 weeks ago. Glad I was a good citizen and didn't look it up while I was still in the jury pool.

Oddly enough the murder took place on MLK boulevard. Go figure.
I've been checking the status of this case every few days. Trial ended today.

They found him guilty on the murder charge and one of the attempted murder charges. Oh, and a bunch of other stuff like discharging a firearm at a person from a vehicle. Color me totally shocked.

I gotta admit... that was a shock to the system. A full bag of ice for 2 or 3 gallons of cool water may have been overdoing it a bit.

Also, I forgot to nominate Bentley.

No, not really. Desperately want to someday though.
Me too. Still disappointed about missing our chance at the Phillies game. Out of our seats for two batters in 14 innings and it cost us. While being held up by the usher we watched the ball hit Stu Jr's seat. No competition and little pace, so I'm positive I would have caught it.

Should I start a separate thread so that guys can tell their stories about catching foul balls?
I caught a foul ball at a Cleveland Indians game. Well, if by "caught a foul ball", you mean "the foul ball bounced around and no one caught it and it fell back into the field of play, and Travis Fryman picked it up and tossed it to me". :bowtie:

"Caught" a foul ball at a Brooklyn Cyclones game. It was my son first game, he was 4-1/2 at the time. We were on the concourse behind the lower level seats, and I had my back to the field while was buying ice cream (in mini batting helmut, natch). I had just turned around to hand him his ice cream when a foul ball one-hopped off the concrete, slammed into my thigh, ricocheted off my shoulder, and went straight up above me. I looked up just in time to nab it, and in one motion offered it to my kid. He got all wide eyed "Do it again! Do it again!"

He told me this summer that's the oldest memory of his life (now 15).

Pretty sure cos caught a foul ball at the Astros game he, TF and I went to. Or TF caught it. Happened right after the other one left either way.

*FouBallChat enabled*...

I "caught" two at the same game(one off the bat of THE Glenallen Hill. I know, try not to swoon). One on the fly, and one that bounced down into the concourse while I was walking back to my seat with food.

Could've had a third if I wanted my brother-in-laws cheese fries down my back, but I thought that it might sound like a euphemism when I told the story later so I didn't go for it. It was the right decision cuz it totally sounds like a euphemism.

I'm sure someone has run the frequency stats of where foul balls have landed in each stadium. Would be interesting to see where to buy tickets to up your chances of getting a foul ball

Back from Astros corn hole. Props to ignoramus for setting it up. A few notes:

-for some reasons cos is unable to receive texts from me. Even in a group thread. Maybe he has me on the JoeT plan

-was talking all game how I've always wanted to catch a foul ball. Told cos the story about when I was 13 I caught 4 straight HR balls from Ron Gant during BP, but I've always wanted to catch a live one. Literally as soon as cos left I caught a bouncer down from the upper deck in the exact to where cos was sitting

-ignoramus has a funny story to tell about the initial meet

A good time had by all
Since I work about a mile away from Minute Maid and didn't have to battle Houston traffic, I ended up being the first one to the bar. I grab a table, order a beer and check my texts... TF says he's walking down Texas St. toward the bar. Cool, he's close. Having never met the guy, I don't know what to look for (other than a dude adorned in purple and gold from head-to-toe, yelling "Geaux Tigers") so I'm just kind of looking for someone that looks like they're looking for someone. One guy who just walks in and is kind of standing there, looking around fits the bill so I make eye contact and yell "Chris?" He nods and walks over, we shake hands and I introduce myself by my slave name and his buddy comes over and introduces himself. We all sit down and there's a little bit of an awkward silence so I ask "So, you're in town for work?" "Yep. work." He asks me what I do and I tell him. A couple more minutes of small talk go by and Chris asks me how I knew his name. I'm a little confused because we've been exchanging texts throughout the day and I had just scanned the thread earlier and for some reason was reminded of this post, so all I could muster was "Aren't you Chris, from the internet?"

Blank stares.

So I'm trying to explain that I'm meeting these guys from the internet that I only know through a message board. Stranger Chris asks me "You do that sort of thing?" "Well, um, this is my first time." They pretty quickly get up from the table and hightail it to the bar and thankfully just a minute or two later cos and TF finally show up.

Turns out Stranger Chris and his buddy were sitting about ten rows in front of us and one section over at the game. Small world.

Cos getting his backpack full of kombucha and vodkas in past ball park security was a thing of beauty. (Although doesn't the vodka kill off all the beneficial bacteria in the kombucha?) Thanks for making the SIX HOUR DRIVE to hang with a D-lister (and TF), GB.

TF's got a glorious head of hair and DID nab a foul ball probably before cos even made it to the top of the stairs (and gave it to a nearby kid, BTW).

Good guys and good times.
Here it is.

I "caught" one when I was 7 or 8 at the old Durham Athletic Park (before the movie ruined the place) when a ball came through the metal mesh behind home plate and rolled to me feet. This was about an inning after asking my dad if we were "safe" where we were sitting.

This is also the place where they had a parking lot about 50 feet from the right field foul line (picture cars parked in the A's foul territory) so while we were leaving we'd look for balls under the cars. The best part was hearing the foul balls smash a windshield and snickering.

God that place was awesome.

The thing I don't get is why grown men get excited about catching a foul ball... tossed from the field... underhand... by the ball girl.

I stopped off at the neighborhood convenience store for a six-pack last night, parked my car, walked towards the door and noticed an amazing technicolor dreamcoat colored cat chilling underneath an SUV at the far end of a parking lot that can maybe fit 6 cars across. Cat didn't look nervous or out of place, but still, as I walked to the coolers full of beer I asked myself, "WWT&ORK4D" and while I briefly mulled over their answer of "Bringing the cat home in the front seat, knighting him, writing him into my will and building him an addition to my home", I opted for a slightly more conservative approach and asked the check-out gal if she knew that there was a cat sitting underneath an SUV in her parking lot. She laughed and said "Yup, that's Chester. He's kind of the store cat. Not sure where he lives, but he just hangs out most days, watching the customers go in and out".

So....my conscience is clean. Chester smirked at me when I exited.
