My firm manages two hedge funds. Used to be four, but times got tough, partners left in droves after uranium crapped the bed, there were days I worried about the long term prospects of our company, blah blah blah. But we've soldiered on and had a good year (though we're doing our damned best to lose it all this month

) and at the end of every year, one of our funds donates 10% of the management fee to charities of the limited partner's choice. We have about 20 partners in this fund and I happily lead the task to find their designated charity, have the checks cut from our Prime Broker and mail them out in December, which I'm doing today. It's part of my job that I love...giving away money that's not mine (though a portion of it should be mine as part of my comp package, but I don't care) to good causes and finding out what charities people support. Happy to report there are no "Human Fund" donations this year.
If a partner doesn't select a charity or get back to me in time or would prefer we just send it to a worthy cause, our firm selects one charity each year to donate these orphan dollars. And since I lead the project, I usually pick the charity with one edict from my boss - pick something that is nationally known since our partners come from all over the country/globe. This year, I chose Wounded Warrior Project which piqued my interest after listening to Jared Allen talk about it this summer on the radio. Did a little homework on them and liked what I found so today, I am pleased to cut them a check for $2,528 American Dollars.
All told, we are donating over $17,000 to charity this year. Makes my Tanner Scrooge heart feel just a tiny amount of holiday cheer.
