Google Chromecast (1 Viewer)

I've got it streaming from the iPad and iPhones but can't find the stream button in the chrome browser on my laptop. Is there a plugin or something I need?

Yeah, once you install the chromecast add-on a TV screen icon appears just to the right of the bookmarks icon in Chrome.

Anyone have trouble seeing Chromecast? Yesterday, it worked fine. Today, I can't see chromecast from any of my devices...just says no chromecasts found on my wi-fi network. Yet, I can go to the homescreen and CC says it's connected and ready to cast. Anyone else have dodgey connectivity to this thing?

Do you use any sort of IP masker or anonymizer? Those aren't compatible with Chromecast, or so I've heard.

Nope. I'm wondering if there's a way to shut it off "correctly" or something. So when you're done watching do you have to do anything to "shut it down" correctly or something? This happened before, but then it just worked again a after a few days. I thought maybe my wi-fi was having trouble or something. But, today, all my other devices and the wi-fi are working fine, so I think it's just the CC. Not broadcasting or something?

I had a problem with mine but it's probably different than your issue. On the TV CC would say ready to cast but my laptop couldn't see it. Wound up that the CC had connected to the wifi extender on the other side of the house. Once I got it back on the router which my laptop was connected to it worked fine.

can anyone figure out to get amazon instant to stream from iphone/ipad?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but there is an Amazon app that is available on the iPad/iPhone that plays the Amazon content. Or are you talking about playing something through your iPad to your tv?

pretty certain that since this is the chromecast thread he's talking about casting Amazon.

I looked into this a while ago and couldn't find a solution to stream through Chromecast. (It turned out to be unnecessary as my Samsung TV could already stream Amazon Instant Video).

I'm hopeful that they eventually get the iOS Chrome to cast. I don't have an Android device but from what I understand you can cast from Chrome on Android, it seems like that should get worked out in iOS before too long. Of course I'm sure Apple will drag their feet on approving it.

I was originally under the impression that amazon app was compatable (like netflix or youtube)

Well mine is dead...freezes at "Chromecast is starting" and does nothing when I hold down the reset button.
We've been busy so I'm just now getting around to contacting google customer support. Chromecast not even recognized by a TV now. Call customer support and they send me through the same troubleshooting as on the website. When all of those fail (like they did when I tried them already) the lady says that she will transfer my case to a Chromecast specialist (seriously? I thought that was who I was talking to) and they will respond to her within 48 hours at which point she will get back in touch with me with more possible solutions. WTF???

I have this thing hooked up to my TV and haven't even really used it.
We use ours daily, but the tv it's hooked up to does not have another way to steam content to.
I use it more for fun on the big tv since I have other easier ways to stream netflix/amazon. There's certain commercials that send one of the dogs into a frenzy. The Geico Old Mcdonald is one. Got it on youtube and casted it to show my daughter. Good times.

Was about to move the CC to the bedroom TV since wife is having surgery tomorrow. Perfect time for her to finally watch Breaking Bad. She has an iPad1. Go to the app store, find CC app...not supported on IOS5. Must upgrade. Go to upgrade, "you have the latest version". iPad1 can't be upgraded to ios6. :wall:

 Why do you need the CC app on your iPad?

The term "Google Customer Support" is an oxymoron. The fact that you actually spoke to a human being is a major upgrade from what it used to be.

:bag: forgot it's built into the Netflix app now. Even see's the roku in daughters room.

I just bought one (not installing until this weekend) but, the more I read, the more I'm confused on what I can/can't do. Maybe some of you guys can clarify? Be gentle, as I'm a techno-idiot.

I run everything through my blueray/HT receiver. I can plug the Chromecast into that instead of my TV, right?

I was under the impression that anything I could stream on my laptop, I could cast to CC. Just talking about my laptop (not even attempting phone or tablet at this point). Can I, or are there some formats/providers that won't work with CC?

So, when I plug this thing in it "finds" my laptop automatically?

Then I get an icon pop up somewhere on my Chrome browser?

I'll have more, but thanks in advance for any light shed.

if your receiver has an open hdmi port you can plug it in there and output to the TV. that's how I had mine.

anything you stream or display in a chrome browser tab can be streamed through the cc.

When you plug in the Chromecast to your TV, you'll then download the CC app to your laptop. That app will walk you through the setup. Essentially what happens is that the CC device connects to your wireless network and then you can use any device connected to that same network to control the CC - computer, iPad, smartphone.

You cant "cast" everything that you can stream on your laptop. Most things that you can stream on a Chrome browser can be sent to the CC - and yes, you will see an icon in the browser that will let you know you're ready to cast.

There's ton's of examples that will walk you through this on both Google and Youtube searches.

Here's what I want: I want the same exact function of connecting my laptop to my TV with an HDMi cable, but wireless. Why doesn't something like that exist yet?

In other words, I want to mirror what's on my laptop or PC screen on my TV screen without wires - be it pictures, video, folders, desktop screen, etc... What's the holdup?

What the Chrome tab casting is effectively doing is encoding/compressing what's in the active Chrome tab, then broadcasting it to Chromecast where it gets decoded and displayed. One could write an app that does that for whatever is on the desktop, not just in the Chrome tab.

The issue is that user experience is heavily dependent on the encoding/compression process at the PC side. Have a fast enough PC/laptop and you're fine. If not, then you understand why Google announced the Chrome tab casting feature as "Beta" during the Chromecast reveal...they don't control the HW and OS on that end of the feature.

Edit: For somewhere in the $150-250 range, you can be a wireless HDMI transmitter to do this.

There is no hold up you can do that with several options. Here is a good one: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_electronics?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Warpia&node=172282

I apparently just got one of these for free. I order a lot using Amazon Prime, and sometimes I order some stuff for my parents if they ask. Today, my mom calls and asks if I had ordered a Chromecast to their address, which I hadn't. They hadn't either, but she wanted to make sure she didn't get charged for it, so she called Amazon. There was no invoice in the package, so the Amazon guy said he couldn't track it and told her to just keep it. She doesn't want it, so it's free Chromecast for me.

I still have no idea what I'll actually use it for yet.

So I got mine working (if you know me, a Herculean feat in itself). First thing I tried was a game on ESPN3. The main screen was cast but the pop-up (is it a flash player?) screen wouldn't appear. I guess that's because it's no longer in the Chrome window? Is there a way around that?

Does the popup window have a cast button? That's the one you want to cast.

I don't know. I didn't even look, but will when I get home. Thanks
