Google Chromecast (2 Viewers)

I was really intrigued with the Netflix tie in. Now, not sure. I know it's just $35 but I already have a Roku and a Logitech Revue that I barely use since I cancelled Netflix. I would have been glad to spend $35 to get back in to Netflix and have another device. But just having the device isn't as important.

Netflix deal is over apparently.

So cancelling orders and removing the netflix promo. Hats off to those who got these early... was a good deal. At a full $35 with a month lead time... ehhh....
That makes no sense. Google should only be so lucky as to have a hardware hit on its hands. if they end up having to subsidize the Netflix promo, they should. Hell, if they need to BUY netflix they should. Furthermore I can't believe with all the data at their disposal they were unable to forecast demand.
They're probably losing money on the hardware even when selling it at full price. The Netflix deal must have been raping them.
As a guy who has worked in the "building electronic gadgets and all the stuff that goes in to them" industry for a while I can say that they aren't losing much, if anything. Furthermore, I don't think the idea was to make money on the Hardware but rather get more people using Google services, so who cares if the loss is magnified by $24?

So what if I ordered it this morning and it was on backorder? Went through Amazon. Do I still get the Netflix deal?

<_<

So what happens if I ordered this morning and it was listed as sold out/awaiting shipping? No good on the netflix deal if it was still ordered before the cancellation was announced?

$24 * 1,000,000ish is a lot more than $24.

Well, I meant if the additional sunk cost is $24 per household to get the device in. Seems like a fairly small number for a company that has had no fewer than two miststeps (Revue, Nexus Q) trying to get on to people's TV's. In other words, considering the APple TV has 50+% of the streaming market, how much money per user would GOogle pay to erode that share. "Larry, I can get you guys in to a million homes across the country for 50 million bucks. Cool? How about two million homes for 100 million? Money well spent?" I think they'd say yes immediately.

Link to this please. And does this count set top boxes, HTPC, laptops, what?

Trying to find a link. Read that in a story this morning about the google offering. I assumed they were talking about set top items like Roku and the review and not all sources of streaming.

Obviously something in the deal was hurting them enough that they had to can it.

I found this on a different message board (chromespot.com)

I received the following email (excerpt) from Google Play customer service:

"Due to overwhelming demand for Chromecast devices since launch, the 3-month Netflix promotion (which was available in limited quantities) is no longer available on Google Play.

"If you ordered a Chromecast before 1pm PST on July 25, 2013, you are eligible for the Netflix promotion and will receive an email with the promo code after your device ships.

"If you purchased the device from Google Play, BestBuy.com or Amazon.com, you'll receive the promo code in an email once your device ships. If you purchased the device from a Best Buy retail store, the promo code will be printed on the receipt. "

I do A/V for live corporate events. I can see this really coming in handy.
:hifive:

How would you apply it?
It would make for a nice clean setup on a plasma. No need to keep the laptop on the shelf or safelock or having to run wires to another location.
Sounds like it could be a cool solution for digital signage. Can it stream a PowerPoint or Keynote slide presentation?

Doesn't seem like it yet but maybe you can convert a PP file to something comparable in Google. I've never used Chrome until downloading it today, so I'm interested in seeing where this goes. Plenty of potential.

There are "powerpoint" like presentations that run in your browser - look up Reveal.js or slid.es - playing them through Chrome should do the trick for presentations.

It looks like any device on your network can access the device, and it even syncs control back and forth between devices. If so, that would be great for companies in conference rooms and stuff like that, to be able to mirror Chrome from any computer in the room on a tv screen in the room.

Missed the Netflix promo, bummer, but still probably in for one. No real hurry to pounce with them being out of stock though.

Carrying audio is a huge plus. Would be even cooler if there were network possibilities. I've had to string CAT5 with Magenta converters just for audio carry along with graphics to several displays from one source. I can see this device have potential in trade booths as well.

Neat, but not sure why you'd buy this instead of a roku which start at 50 other than to save a few bucks but have far less content.
It's airplay with the Apple locks shot off.
Ok, but I'm still not sure what's the big deal about that. I'm not a roku owner b/c i watch everything downloaded via a media server connected to all my tvs, but I don't see what this is giving as far as content that you're not getting with roku except the need for another machine whether its a phone/tablet/laptop to stream content to this.
I use the Xbox 360 to stream and watch all my media. The advantage I see with this device is that i can carry it on the road with me. A lot of the hotels I stay at now have good sized TV's with HDMI ports.

 oh to be 15 again
 Not sure why anything I said would make you think I am 15. I am a Developer and Gamer. I prefer using one device and the 360 is the best platform I have found so far.

Thought it was worth buying at $11. Don't think it is at $35 for me.

The old bait and switch. Well done google.
How is it bait and switch?
See OP.

But they didn't "switch" anything.
Well they were offering the netflix discount getting people excited about that price point and then they took it away. Whether it was intentional, horrible forecasting on the part of google or it was their intended purpose to only offer that discount for a very short time period is unknown.

Right, but it's not like they kept the order and switched in something less valuable (or nothing at all) than the Netflix description.

People aren't out anything with a canceled order and everyone that ordered one will get the Netflix discount.

The caveat of "while supplies last" (implied in this case, I guess) doesn't make it "bait and switch" when those supplies run out.

Well there were plenty of people, myself included, that bought it with the netflix offer still being listed. They should have pulled that offer as soon as the supply ran out. I might not have ordered it right away but the $11 deal was too good to pass up

Was there a caveat of "while supplies last" on the netflix promotion or just on the chromecast itself? If so, then i take back my joke.

ETA: I sure wish boards in general had a way for you to specify how many nested quotes you want to keep. You don't want to lose immediate context, but I'd rather now keep reposting endless quotes and I hate having to manually remove quotes as the end tags always get screwed up at first.
