More on this:
Grant had only eight carries in the first half and when he wasn't in the game in the second half he could be seen riding a stationary bike on the sideline. He ran just once in the third quarter - in part because the Packers didn't have the ball much - and twice in the fourth quarter before breaking his long run.
Apparently, Grant was under strict orders not to push it too hard if he got into the open field and when he got beyond the line of scrimmage, he heeded the advice.
"The trainers and coaches were yelling at me on the sideline, 'Don't open it up, don't open it up,' " Grant said. "I didn't. And that's my mentality, not to do it right away. But it will get better."
Exactly when that occurs is unknown. More than likely, the coaches will have to limit Grant's work in practice until the hamstring improves.
He was given several weeks off during training camp to let the injury heal, but it's clear he still has a ways to go before he's back to full strength. Grant said he was told he did no further harm to the hamstring during the game, so he should be able to play Sunday at Detroit.
Against the Vikings, he played 24 snaps and touched the ball on half of them. Backup Brandon Jackson played 30 snaps and had seven rushes for 12 yards and three catches for 18 yards.
McCarthy said Grant played about as much as was expected.
