Gray to be GB Def Coordinator (1 Viewer)

Are there any online radio stations that would carry the live press conference today in GB ? ?Jerry Gray is going to get the defensive coordinator job now that Bates has been let go....

Has this been confirmed? They did announce offensive hirings today...Packers name 6 offensive coachesThe Green Bay Packers announced today that they had hired six offensive assistant coaches, leaving only one vacancy on Mike McCarthy's staff on that side of the ball. The key hire probably was Joe Philbin, who has been named offensive line coach. Philbin was the Packers' assistant offensive line coach in 2003 and tight ends coach the past two years.Other assignments include: Edgar Bennett, running backs coach; Jimmy Robinson, wide receivers coach; Ben McAdoo, tight ends coach; James Campen, assistant offensive line coach; and Ty Knott, offensive quality control coach.Bennett and Campen also are holdovers from Mike Sherman's staff.McAdoo was San Francisco's assistant line/quality control coach last season. In 2004, he was on the New Orleans staff.Knott spent the past three seasons as defensive assistant/quality control coach with New Orleans. He also worked with Jacksonville in 2002, Detroit in 2001 and Washington in 1999.The Packers said in a press release that McCarthy had only a quarterbacks coach to name. Earlier, Jeff Jagodzinski was named offensive coordinator

I think he just interviewed today...and this press conference was already scheduled before that was even announced for sure...

I just read that he was interviewing there today, so its certainly possible that they hired him as well.if true, great signing for the Pack, and it should definitely help soften the blow of losing Bates.

If this turns out to be true kudos to McCarthy for making a solid hire. Gray has been great in Buffalo and turning around the GB defense will undoubtedly put him closer to a HC opportunity [if he does turn it around, of course.]

Tell me about him a bit. I know Buffalo has been a pretty good D, but what can we expect? Agressive blitzing? More base packages? Just curious.

Just so folks know, the PC called today was to announce the offensive assistants McCarthy has either added or retained. It had nothing to do with Gray, who I also believe would be a terrific hire if it came to fruition.

I've heard good things about Gray too, but Buffalo sure has seemed anxious to run him out of town.....

he learned under Gregg Williams in Tennessee and in Buffalo (along with some help from Lebeau for a little while). Pretty blitz heavy scheme.

he did a very good job up until 2005, when the run defense just collapsed. there were legitimate reasons (i.e., personnel losses), but I believe a good coach should have been able to scheme around them. it just seemed like the defense was often undisciplined this year and did not generally do a good job of gap control. based on that, I didn't believe Gray deserved a promotion to head coach, but I would have liked to see him brought back as the defensive coordinator if possible. He has 5 years of coordinating experience now, but he's still a young coach with a ton of promise.

The Williams and LeBeau contributions should be underscored. I'm skeptical giving Gray too much credit.

Edgar Bennett, running backs coach;
I would bet someday he's a Pack HC.
Besides being a former player and a class act, EB is said to be an outstanding teacher and a player's coach. The franchise loves this guy.

he held another position between player and RB coach. Personnel development? something, can't recall

I'd like to see McCarthy bring in LeRoy Butler to coach the DB's.
I'd like to see that too. And I agree with the posters above with regard to Bennett. I don't know if he'll be a head coach in the NFL, but he did an outstanding job as the RBs coach this season in particular. Very smart move by McCarthy to keep him. Edgar is definitely a good coach and no question he's a class act. Always has been.

I don't know quite the tag they put on him, but, Edgar started out as a (for lack of a better term) a mentor to the rookies coming into the league. Quality control? Spiritual advisor? He would mentor the young kids about the nuances of the NFL, and, what it takes to be a 'responsible pro football player'. Much like the classes the NBA put its rookies through, and so forth.

EDIT: Ol' #36 still calls into the "Big Unit Bill Michaels" Sports Central show on 620AM about once a month. Still, one of the better interviews in the game. The man is no-nonsense, and speaks from the heart.

Can't put a name on it, though.

I for one am not thrilled about seeing all these former Packer players becoming assistants - and I DEFINATELY never want to see one of as a HC for GBP. Have we forgotten the woes of the 80s - with Bart & Forest at the helm! Don't get me wrong - I think Edgar Bennett seems like a good guy, and helped out tremendously with Gado - but HC?!?! Come on! The closest thing to the past that I'd like to see revisited on the Packers - I'd love to see them draft Charlie Whitehurst in the 5th/6th round if he's still there! There was nothing better than chanting for David Whitehurst to play in those wonderful 80s games!

How do you explain guys like Landry then?Or are you just saying former Packers don't make good coaches?

Ah no. It was **** Lebeau who created the Bills defense that was in the top 3 in '03 and '04. Gray benefited the following year in '04 but his biggest problem was he was too predictable with his blitzing, (they only blitzed from the outside for one) and he didn't make any adjustments at halftime. If I was a Packer fan, I'd be worried for sure.

I'm just referring to former Packers. There's LOTS of former players that have done well in the NFL as head coaches - just not former Packers coaching the Packers.
