19.10 Ultima Online, multiplayer

the first MMORPG (yes there were games before that left hundreds of people at the same time, but UO andt he games that came after it are in another class of "multiplayer" than those)... What else needs to be said?

14 years after first being released, it is STILL online and is still played today. It had an expansion pack released in 2009 and a booster pack released in 2010.

also, there are 8 different World Records in the Guinness World Records book regarding UO... just thought that was really cool and should be noted...

This game won many awards and spawned a couple of sequels. This game was game of the year when it did come out and was tough as well. Moving forward from its 2D name into a FPS standard gave way for its success. The story was great but the action/adventure it had was even better. Not much more to say though on a Friday night. To this I ado:

Mario Kart

Arcade(1) Dragon's Lair (5.12)

Arcade(2) Smash TV - Arcade (16.02)

Third Generation (1983-1990) Phantasy Star - Sega MS (8.02)

Fourth Generation (1987-1995) Gunstar Heroes - Genesis (12.02)

Fifth Generation (1993-2001)

Sixth Generation (1998-2009)

Sports Baseball Stars - NES (9.12)

I like all kinds of games. Simple, complex, short, long, thorough and whatever else you want to put in here. However, there are times when you just want a game to have fun and go through a story you are familiar with, with no holds barred fun. The theme of this game is one we all know and the story is one we all know and the action is non stop block busting action. Characters galore too. This game has helped spawn off indirect sequels as well. In a galaxy far far away, here it is:

Mario Kart

Arcade(1) Dragon's Lair (5.12)

Arcade(2) Smash TV - Arcade (16.02)

Third Generation (1983-1990) Phantasy Star - Sega MS (8.02)

Loved that game. Wanted to draft it a few times, but I was afraid it would give me too many games that were personal favorites, but probably won't score all that well with the judges.

 was on my initial list, but as much as I love it I couldn't convince myself that it was universally considered great enough to deserve being drafted... although I was warming up to the idea as we get later and later...

19.09 Grim Fandango, Best Story, PC 1998

You play Manny Calavera, a mid-level worker at the the DOD (Department of Death) who's trying to work off his sins in life so that he can get to his final reward. As a reaper, Manny frees incoming souls from their shrouds, finds out what kind of underworld travel packages their goodness in life has earned them, and then sends them on their way.

Unfortunately, business hasn't been very good for Manny of late. As the game begins, Calavera is told that he must sell a premium travel package to a soul or lose his job. In his search, Manny uncovers a hideous plot, a beautiful woman, and a crew of loyal friends (not necessarily in that order). The world is a rich one, complete with its own laws, its own personality types, and landscapes.

The game has received multiple awards and been placed on the top of many top games lists throughout the years, including best pc game, most underrated game of all-time and best story. Of course, the latter, in this case, is for the judge to decide.

Game Trailer -

Wow - nice pick as well.

19.04 Planescape: Torment - PC - Best Story
Not only a great pick, but a clever category placing as well.Well done, sir.
:shark: I have had Planescape: Torment and a yet to be picked RPG as my sleeper Best Story picks since the start of the draft. Very few categories I have had a certain pick chosen for a long time. Its usually take what I think is great value. But the story category I have had pegged for a while just hoping both my picks didn't go in the same round right before me in the 16.00+ range. If anyone picks my other sleep Best Story pick they will receive a cookie. I place the o/u on who have heard of it before at 1.5.

Commentary of the picks made while I was gone:

Ultima Online

I'm very surprised this game slipped this far. I thought about taking it in place of Fallout 2, but I really liked Fallout 2 better. But UO has a bigger place in MMORPG history.

Metroid Prime

The only series of Metroid games I have yet to fully play through. I bought the Metroid Prime Trilogy for my Wii for Christmas and I will be playing through them all very soon. At the moment, I'm having trouble getting into it, being that it's the first FPS Metroid game. I've heard nothing but great things of the game, though, so I will persevere. Metroid is only one of my favorite series, after all.

Yeah, nothing can get Duck Tales out of my head.

so, I have a choice...

on one hand I can give a giant middle finger to Mario Kart and everyone else who thinks that my team is much too "one-sided" to be any good and just take what I like and realize that, at the end of the day, 90% of my video game playing has been JRPGs and Nintendo-made games (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc.)...

on the other, I could pick a few games that I don't really like and only played a little with other people...

I think I'm gonna go with the first option...

20.4 Final Fantasy, NES 3rd Generation

20.05 Forza Motorsport 3, Racing, XBox 360

I'm not going to do a big writeup on this one. It's a sim racer in the style of Gran Turismo available on the XBox consoles. Gameplay is really good and pretty easy to get into but very hard to master.

Best video I could find was this IGN Review -

Hey Larry,

I've been stuck in Japan this past week and been following the thread.

I went to Yodobashi Camera this morning to look for some toys for the kids.

I came across these figurines for Chrono Trigger

http://plamoya.com/en/chrono-trigger-forma...?cPath=143_1402

They came in individual boxes with a random figure. I bought 5 and got 3 of the Crono/Frog one and 2 of the Robo/Chrono one.

Not sure if you had seen these, but they are very cool.

I'm sure this was clarified when it was drafted, but I didn't see the pick, so: is "Super Mario Brothers 2" the Doki Doki Panic semi-port or the legitimate Super Mario Brothers 2 aka The Lost Levels?

It's the US Super Mario Bros. 2 (Doki Doki Panic). Drafter wasn't aware there was others. We had a big discussion about it.

I arrived back home tonight. So sorry, too late. The store I went to had so many figures, (transformers/whatever), I didn't even know what I was looking at.

Wish I bought more Chrono ones though.... Could have just sold the extras on ebay.

Its all cool larry boy. Everybody has their own video game tastes. Hell, a lot of people in this draft are going heavy NES/Arcade. The only reason they aren't receiving the same attention as your picks is because there are a few of them doing it. A few of your picks including Final Fantasy I, VI, and IX have sniped what I was planning on taking a few picks later in the round.

Someone made comment to me privately about how PC slanted my draft was going. I knew I was taking mostly PC games and I was proud of myself for being diverse with my console choices. But it didn't occur to me until pointed out that my only 80's game was Mega Man II. This being from a person who has been gaming since Pong. I'm sort of disappointed with myself, but I really think I've gotten some really good picks here.

I still needed to fill my spot for best multiplayer game. I just spent a few minutes thinking what is my favorite multiplayer game that I have ever played(my 1A/1B have been picked). Doh, I already have my #3 as one of my picks. TMNT: Turtle in Time moves to "Best Multiplayer" and River City Ransom moves to "Beat em Up".

You already had RCR in Beat em Up. You had TMNT in arcade.

We're probably close to the same age (I'm 44), and there was a time - around 1984-1991 or so - that I somewhat dropped off the map gaming-wise (girls, booze, bars, etc were more the focus). I'm real versed with the arcade scene, but I kinda missed the whole nintendo thing, and when I did get back into gaming in the early 90's, it was PC more than anything. I definitely liked some of those early console games, but they certainly don't mean anything to me like they do to some other posters here. Mario? Zelda? Fun for a bit, but kid stuff fluff, really. Give me Warcraft 2 over prettymuch *any* pre-current generation console game.

Worst Game

Flex Video Game(1)

Flex Video Game(2)

I have a good system selection. I have one XBox 360 picked out for my next couple picks but not sure if I will hit Atari, 3DO, Game Boy, Saturn, Jaguar, or other hand held. I like the variety I have picked. Something for everyone. Kind of surprised I do not have any SNES or N64 games on this list because I owned both of those but I guess I became more selective as I grew up.

5 NES (Baseball Stars, Bomberman, R.C. Pro-Am, Kid Icarus, Ultima III)

4 Arcade (Dragon's Lair, Smash TV, Gauntlet, T2)

3 Nintendo Characters (Link, Samus Aran, Ganon)

2 GameCube (Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros. Melee)

1 PSX Character (Sephiroth)

1 Sega Master System (Phantasy Star)

1 Genesis (Gunstar Heroes)

1 PS3 (LittleBigPlanet)

1 Wii (Lego Star Wars)

1 PS2 (Silent Hill 2)

I have one Genesis game that I might put into Best Story, one XBox 360 game that I would put into Puzzle, I can maybe fit one N64 game into the Flex spot but cannot find any SNES games that I recall as being real good.

I am shocked that I don't have a single PS1 or PS2 title in my picks, but I have a ton of arcade games which I never would have expected.

Ok madshot. I've gone over the first 4 posts and I've found the discrepancies and here are what needs to be fixed to get everything up to date:

These changes are to post 4

9. Medal of Honor - PS1 (17.01)

10. Cool Boarders 2 - PS1 (18.09)

11.

12.

13.

* indicates the game that was missing

FPS/TPS (3 spot is repeated and it's confusing)

Action/Adventure (Metroid Prime is double listed. Shouldn't be in Action/Adventure)

Platformer (Missing a spot. #3 spot is missing. Probably hanging out playing FPS's)

Hack and Slash/Beat 'em Up

1. Mike Tyson Punch-Out - NES (3.01)

2. Gauntlet - Arcade (6.02)

3. Diablo II - PC (6.05)

4. Batman: Arkham Asylum - PS3 (7.03)

5. Double Dragon - Arcade (7.08)

6. River City Ransom - NES (9.02)

7. Golden Axe - Arcade (10.03)

10. The Simpsons - Arcade (13.06)

11. Battletoads - NES (18.01)

12.

13.

Best Multiplayer (Fix where you added TMNT, take out the additional #11)

Best Villain (Numbers 13 and 14 repeat.)

Flex game list missing The Legend of Zelda (I don't remember him moving there, but according to his draft chart, that's where it is)

Post 3, bmarks has Ryu (13.08) listed as Best Villain. Should be Main Character.

That's what I have for now and should get all games in the spots and have the correct number of games listed correct. I'm trying to keep track of what's taken, how many from each category, so I'm using that post to double check myself. I hope this helps.

Thanks, got them all fixed now. When I have an extra number in the lists its usually because I copy/paste a name that was moved and then forgot to delete the extra number after I change the other numbers in the group. Acer did change Zelda to a flex below one of his normal picks I believe.

To get Cloud like 13 rounds after Sephiroth = good value, IMO...
Just when I think this board can't possibly get any more  , we get gems like this.I wonder if video game message boards have football drafts in their FFA area.
I have never thought about this, good question....hmmmmm????
Here's a link I found from a DVDtalk forum. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/video-game-talk/5...tournament.htmlBasketball forum - http://insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.ph...258&page=35

If you want to send Yo mamas pick to me no prob. He picks before me and you don't have to worry about slowing draft down

I see wazoo is here. If he picks, I'll make the pick. If he doesn't before I go to bed, I'll pass it to someone else.
