Green Bay Packers Thread (3 Viewers)

According to the Twitter Rodgers has been telling possible FAs for the last two years he wasn't going to be in Green Bay in 2021. Hard to cry about how they haven't surrounded you with talent and tell FAs to sign elsewhere at the same time.

If he has done that...yeah, just going to make himself look bad (and piss of current teammates).  Would also lend credence to some of the criticism of former teammates (Jennings and Finley)

Not only is it a betrayal to Gutenkust, its a betrayal to your coaches and teammates. And worst yet, its a huge betrayal to the Green Bay fans. Erin who?

Is the organizational structure of the Packers (no true "owner") not able to handle this type of situation? I've been hearing talk of this and wonder how valid it is. The one thing Brady had in all those years was Kraft to calm the waters and tell him everything was going to be ok. Who does or doesn't do this fo GB? Murphy?

It isn’t Murphy right now...but should be.  But he seems in sync with the GM.

There is a discussion that needs to be had in GB in reigning in his power some.  What was once a more business side of the team deal...Murphy now has more power over the football side than previously was given to his position (or at least more than Harlan ever wanted).

Its Murphy who now is over the coach and not the GM.  They tried to claim it was for better communication and this  big soliloquy about silos...but they have  made a mess of communication now.

Reminder that I also think it was Murphy who offered or came up with the retirement/stat retired payoff to Favre.  He is one of the few still around in power who went through that and is repeating some of the same mistakes.

Murphy is terrible.  Just a brutal leadership style.  All of this starts with his incompetence.

He is great in the off the field...keep the organization making money and viable for years to come.  That role he has done well.   And thus far...the Lafleur pick was a great one as coach and it seems to be his doing.  But when he gets too involved in the on the field stuff...it’s typically a mess.  And much of this IMO has been his errors as much as Gutenkunst.

Family Night Practice...and the (seemingly) annual tradition of rain and a lightning strike continues.

The "highlights" early included Larry McCarren's pinky looking more mangled than ever and Aaron Rodgers repeating the video clip from a few days ago...this time dropping two in a row into the net from 50 yards.

Lowlight occurred as the broadcast started by going through some training camp story lines while showing players warming up.  They said how good of a camp Vandez-Scantling was having, cut to him running a slant, and he promptly dropped the ball.  Couldn't have timed it better if they tried.

Deep sleeper fantasy info: team seems high on 6th round rookie RB Kylin Hill.  Was pass-catcher in limited games last season in college and could see some work in 3rd down situations.  3rd round pick Amari Rodgers seems to be getting reps in the slot and in the backfield.  With the depth GB has at WR it seems unlikely he gets a lot of snaps, but he's working into the action more than I expected.

IDP: 1st round pick Eric Stokes is getting work with the 1st team defense and could be a decent pick for those that try and hit on a rookie CB each year.  Playing across from Jaire Alexander could make that situation worth watching in deep leagues with CBs.  In more traditional IDP leagues De'Vondre Campbell seems to have worked his way into a starting ILB role.  Not sure what percentage of defensive snaps he'll receive but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for the update TJ.

Seems my usual radio guys I stream/podcast and writers have focused so much on the Rodgers stuff that we don't get as much coverage of the rest of the team.

Though, now seeing a little more of it as the Rodgers stuff calms down some.

Hearing Amari Rodgers has been fielding punts?  Hopefully that works out well...I don't recall who they were saying is taking kickoffs so far (might be the rookie RB).  Definitely need some better work out of the return game than we have had for a few years.  Was actually thinking if worse came to worse they would stick Cobb back there on punts knowing he can at least catch the dang thing.

Here it is: Jordan Love will indeed start Saturday’s preseason opener against the Texans and “will play the majority of the game” and Kurt Benkert will finish it. Coach Matt LaFleur said Aaron Rodgers will “most likely not” play in the preseason.
Good news, not surprising. I might actually watch a bit of this game.

Not going to take too much out of a game full of 3rd stringers overall.  But quick thoughts getting to see a preseason game again.

Special teams still look  :X

Likewise with Josh Jackson.  They and I were very wrong about him.  The instincts and playing fast on the field vs just 40 time speed…just haven’t seen any of it from him.

Love…mixed bag but mostly a positive start.  Made some me nice reads and throws.  The 3rd big play to Sternberger on the TD drive.  The types of plays you hope he can make consistently.

The reserve Oline looked decent in pass protection.  Not much in the run game.  Looks like they found a good one in Myers.  Loved seeing him blocking on the screen for the TD.

The two guys who stood out to me..

Orin Burks…did the opposite of Jackson and showed splash plays and played fast.  If he can stay healthy, he should make good depth and push to start or for some playing time beyond special teams (where he has fine well)

Kylin Hill…good hands and burst and looks pretty good on kick returns.

Funchess…the size and hands show up.

Josh Jackson traded to the Giants for a corner.  Isaac Yiadom…was apparently a third round pick in 2018 (Broncos).   Looked like Jackson wasn’t going to make the team anyway apparently.

Again...preseason with basically all of our starters sitting...and sure its the Jets...but they had their starters out there a while...but have a few observations.

Special teams still sucks...yeah, no starters...but you got to think a lot of the reserve guys playing are guys that will be playing teams anyway.

Kylin Hill again...great burst and moves.  Has to be a lock to be the #3 guy.

If Myers gets hurt...we have trouble at C.  Lucas Patrick has been sort of the swiss army knife of OL depth...but he looked bad yesterday.  I guess they could use Elgton Jenkins, but need him at tackle til Bakhtiari comes back.

Malik Taylor made some nice plays for Benkurt...just not sure they keep enough WRs for him to stay around.   Jace had a typical night for him...some drops...and a nice route and catch for a TD.  Again, not sure the roster is big enough to keep him.

Benkurt is fun to watch.  Sure, the backup to the backup is usually popular when he plays sort of wide open and free the way this kid does.

Not much good or bad to say about the D.  So vanilla, so many guys that won't be playing.  Not really much of a standout there beyond a total lack of communication on several big plays by the Jets.

Not sure of the final WR room. Adams, MVS, Rodgers, Lazard are locks. Cobb as well given that he's Aaron's guy. Taylor has earned a spot as well I think. Funchess seemed to have a good game last week before suffering a hamstring injury this week. Not sure they keep 7 though. Maybe #12 can play the role of the Turk and explain to Funchess or Taylor why they are keeping Cobb over them.

Benkhert has played well as a #3. Not sure he makes the team though. Will come down to if they need the roster spot for another position group. Not sure if they' be able to sneak him through to the practice squad. IIRC he has experience with Atlanta and yesterday they just lost AJ McKarron as their no. 2 QB. I could see him landing back there in some way or another.

Hill has been very impressive. RBs will be Jones, Dillon and Hill. Hill should also give the kick return a boost.

They just can't seem to fix the special teams but I guess that is to be expected when you get rid of the special teams coach because of poor play and elevate the #2 guy. They need to bring someone in from outside the organization. Sure wish they could find a replacement for JK Scott. He had a punt yesterday that went 21 yards and almost ended up in the first row. No consistency from him. I imagine Crosby's comfort level with him as the holder is saving him.

OL Patrick has really struggled this off season. They have a lot of versatility and depth there so I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a cap casualty.

Agree on all points.  That first punt from Scott…50 yards and fair catch inside the 10…then as you said has the awful punts. Zero consistency.

Taylor seems to shine ok in preseason…and the injury to Funchess doesn’t help…but seems Taylor does that and then sort of disappears as well.  Not sure he is anything more than a reserve type ever…which is why I would keep Funchess over him.

And yes…likely we lose Benkert…fun kid to watch.

I think Malik Taylor lead the Packers in special teams plays last season. Since Funchess does not play special teams at all, I think right now you have to keep Taylor if its between those two.  That's going to be an interesting cut down, especially having no idea what Cobb will bring to the team and the GM openly saying he's only here because of #12.

I'm worried about special teams, but not too much just yet.  Its got to be hard putting together special teams units when you don't know who your pool of players will be, and all the starters are in street clothes so your main guys are all playing from scrimmage.

So far this years draft class is looking pretty good

CB Eric Stokes, C Josh Myers and OL Royce Newman probably starters

WR Amari Rodgers probably having a decent role

RB Kylin Hill as the #3 RB and kick returner

This for a team with enough talent to make back-to-back NFCCGs

It's almost as if that Gutekunst guy knows what he is doing

It's still way too early to judge, but yeah - seems he may have knocked it out of the park once again.  Cut-down day will be difficult at several positions, and it seems likely a number of these cuts won't be clearing waivers.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple more Josh Jackson type trades in the next couple weeks.

Way too early.  We need to see these guys play in real games still.  Early signs look good, but a long way to go.

Not surprising.  He’s been horrible in camp.

Yeah, I guess I haven't been paying much attention.  I had high hopes for Martin.  I do think its a bit odd they were able to trade Josh Jackson and Ka'dar Hollman,  but not Martin.  The odd thing there isn't Martin though, its more that those two CBs had value to someone.

I think just two more cuts before end of day tomorrow.

He's gone - IR.  Might catch on somewhere else if/when they do an injury settlement.
Yeah...heard on one of the Milwaukee shows that he may not have meshed in the locker room.  Not like anything really bad...but that he just didn't fit in.  Not sure the veracity of that reporting though  (was maybe at the tail end of the show with Chmura).

Wait……Chmura has a show?!

Thoughts from the little I watched.

Love looked ok...like there has been progress there it seems.  Made some nice plays and made a couple mistakes (one obviously costly one).  But he looked like he was in control and more decisive.

Kylin Hill is just flat out fun to watch...once he realizes he cannot always bounce outside...it may click that he can even have success in the middle (and he had some success in there yesterday).

If they keep 6...yeah, it should be Malik Taylor.  Not sure they do.

Sternberger just doesn't have it.  Not a great threat in the pass game and cannot block.  They may hold on to him knowing they don't have to put him in the 53 because of the suspension (if I understand it right).  So he may not just be outright released...because if someone else gets hurt they would possibly keep him.  Just see it as a waste.

Defense...not sure I can really assess that unit which had no starters out there...other than Slaton is a very big man.

Ian Rapoport@RapSheet

The #Packers are keeping All-Pro LT David Bakhtiari (knee) on the PUP list into the season, source said, meaning he’ll miss the first six weeks. Tough blow for Green Bay, but this will allow perhaps the game’s best LT the chance to fully heal.

Not a shock. Thanks to great drafting on the OL, allowing him to fully heal is a luxury the team can cover. We could see 2 rookies starting on the OL opening day - Meyers almost certainly and possible Newman.

Yeah...would have loved to have had him back early...but the timeline to make sure he is healed and ready for the stretch run of a 17 game schedule...this was not surprising.

Any impressions or news on Tonyan over the preseason/camp?
Not really much made of him from what I have read and hear.  The talk has been more about the WR group that TE and starters haven't played in any of the preseason games.

Id expect a dip in TD numbers...but will still be a solid redzone target.  Question IMO will be if Cobb playing out of the slot will take any shorter pass volume from Tonyan.  but there again he will still be TD reliant in fantasy.

Let me preface by saying the obvious.  Praying for all affected by hurricane IDA and the subsequent flooding and loss of power and all...

That said, this is a football board, and a football thread.

The game being moved, should be good for the Packers.  Especially with youth on the OL.  Not having to play in the Superdome in front of the Saints home crowd...should make it easier for the rookies on the OL vs. what they were expecting.

Looks like Week 1 will be at Jacksonville.  Seems like a pretty big break for the Packers, not having to go into the Superdome to start the season.
