Grocery Store-What are you paying for food? (1 Viewer)

All I know is, my wife and I make a pretty decent combined income........our income is much higher than it's ever been in our almost 20 years of marriage.......and it feels like we have less disposal income then we've ever had......hell, we we had more money to blow when she was staying home with babies, and it was just my income. I do not know the numbers, but I'd bet most groceries have doubled, or tripled, in price over the last 10-20 years. Meanwhile, wages have not kept up the pace at all.

Some things we've done to offset are......meal prepping. We cook big meals and freeze. We try to eat a lot of whole foods. Fruit, veggies, etc. pre-packaged stuff is spendy AF, and generally bad for you anyway.
Would you be surprised to learn that wage increases have outpaced grocery inflation, (33% to 25%) over the last 4 years?

That is probably a true statement, but missing some context.

It's the lower and higher end workers seeing the largest wage increases. Middle class is doing okay, but not 33%.

It's also a one for one comparison and doesn't account for the 20+ other aspects of inflation that eat into the same wage growth. (Home. Auto, insurance, energy, medical...)

Not true (well true in the sense it's not 33% but still pretty good), lower class is doing the best but middle class wage inflation still outpacing inflation as a whole by 3-6%, and outpacing the upper class.

Have to scroll down a bit to figure 7:

I don't know if it's a value of the dollar argument or a case of other things not rising keep the overall inflation number down.

But looking at wage growth vs the top 5 expenditures (shelter, vehicles, food, insurance, medical) it isn't keeping pace. All 5 of those things are at or near record highs as well.

Then things like clothing or hotel stays have remained stagnant for 5 years, which brings down the overall inflation number.

I'd guess my government wage has gone up about 15-18% over the last 5 years. It was 1.9% this year. Our health premiums are up 13% from last year and now updated property taxes are hitting our county which is up significantly from last year because home values are up. Long way of me saying I've lost buying power over the last 30 days alone and it's not getting better.

So macro level, I'm sure wages are keeping pace, but I still feel that statement is lacking context.
The prices are one thing, but we have seen a lot of shrinkflation. Frito Lay is shrinking their bags again right now.
well technically, they are making the bag bigger and filling it with less product, but i understand the concept. ;)

Speaking of eggs, Waffle House is now adding a surcharge for every egg that's sold. Bet this starts to happen everywhere.

This belongs in the pet peeve thread. JUST RAISE YOUR PRICES the hidden fee ******** makes me so mad.

18 pack of eggs for $4 today at Kroger. The sky is not falling.
$4.39 a dozen at Kroger here today. And plenty of them.
Always subject to change as these things go.

There's going to be some short term pain, but egg price spikes usually bounce back pretty quick. They can grow these factory chickens really fast.

It's funny, Waffle House said they hope the increases are temporary.

I'm going to save everybody the suspense, the Waffle House price increases are not temporary.
Egg prices will come down. Waffle House prices will not.

Perhaps, but the increases have been steadily upward since around Labor Day last year.

The earlier egg price increases of 2023 did seem to come and go a lot quicker. This one is lingering.

No, prices at chain restaurants never come back down after the "temporary" price hikes are no longer relevant. Buffalo Wildwings has never adjusted prices when gas or wing costs go back down.

For all you egg lovers, I have found that the prices of the liquid egg whites and whole eggs in the milk type cartons have remained the same price. That may dependent on your location but still the same price here.

Bought a 12 pack of eggs at Trader Joe's for $4.39. I sure hope I recover financially from this.
What kind of eggs? There's a big difference in taste for a lot of folks.
Even with the 50 cent hike at Waffle House, I'd never order eggs or really anything in there, just not my cup of tea.
Cracker Barrel is OK but I typically would order something like pancakes in there, if I want eggs I can make those at home and taste better

My Happy Eggs in the blue carton run anywhere from $7.99 at Fresh Mkt up to $9.50 at Publix
2 eggs for breakfast cost me a whopping $1.50, it's hard to keep up ;)

I get your POV but reach out and get some high quality ones and taste the difference when you get those with the deeper orange vs the pale yellows
Eggs are popping up as headlines across the country, didn't seem to get many folks attention when they rose by 50-60% last year, suddenly they're front and center again.

What are organic apples running in your neck of the woods?
Apples cost more than blueberries around where I am

The latest consumer price index (CPI) released by the Labor Department shows the price of eggs jumped 8.2% in November, and according to The Wall Street Journal, the price of a dozen eggs is now at $5.77 – up 146.6% from 2023.

Oh, I don't know.....just regular white eggs? I don't eat them enough to care on quality. My kids like breakfast for dinner nights when dad's in charge (about once every two weeks or so) and I'll use them for the Dutch Baby and scramble some up. Occasionally my boys will ask for an egg sando. I probably eat eggs 10 times a year or so? Although if my wife and kids dye easter eggs you best believe this tub of lard is eating at least 5 of those with cajun salt and black pepper. 🐷

My boss supplies the office with apples, so I'm not sure what they're going for. He buys the honey crisp from Whole Foods which I wouldn't do - they charge too much regardless of the economy.

Trader Joe's has put limits on egg sales nationwide:

“Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe’s stores across the country,” Trader Joe’s spokesperson Nakia Rohde said in an email. “We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe’s.”

The grocer’s website shows that one dozen pasture-raised, large brown eggs cost around $5, while a dozen from similar businesses like Fred Meyer’s starts at about $7.49.

Our Sprouts was totally out of eggs Tuesday, so we are rationing ours. One of our good friends has 20 or so chickens in the backyard :moneybags:

How do you like dem apples!

This is a little misleading, MoP.

While current egg prices are certainly high, they are roughly the same as at the peak of bird flu outbreak during 2022. Those prices came down by half once the outbreak was over.

I'm not sure what your source is for the $5.77, but this data from the Fed Reserve database gives a pretty good picture of the recent price gyrations.

Not sure but I don't find them any better than what our version of Krogers' sells.

I'm on an orange kick right now and boss man is buying the sumo citrus oranges that look like an older lady's bosom. Easy to peel, delicious to eat......sumo citrus, what a treat!

Our local upscale market had some citrus bonanza the other day, I sampled a blood orange but didn’t buy anything. They even had those Buddha’s Hands

They have really nice stuff there but everything is like 2x more expensive. I usually go there when I need some sort of specialty item, like I’ll go on for a rutabaga and then I end up spending $100

that's a big jump in % but most people prob avg an egg a day, some more some less, so that's like $1.50/week.

I haven't been paying much attention to egg prices, but I was shopping at our usual store a couple days ago and saw they were almost $6 a dozen. I knew I wasn't that low on them at home, so didn't bother buying them. Had to stop at TJ's right after for something specific and saw they were $3.49 for their cage free large dozen there, so bought 3 dozen in case their prices didn't last. Got the brown ones since the date on them was a week or two later than the white ones.

You do admit the headlines say things like "$9.00 a dozen in California" ...I already posted the Wall Street Journal, not gonna keep linking stories, WSJ is fairly credible, yes/no?
Should we post up photos of the prices in the local egg cases? What section of the country are you in if you don't mind sharing...I'm in South Florida/Treasure Coast area
I haven't seen $4 dozen eggs round here for some time

The eggs I prefer are $8/dozen minimum
I don't eat eggs in the pink/white styrofoam and a lot of other don't either

Eggs in Ohio the other day, $6.50 a dozen for the cheapest.
We just didn't buy eggs that day. We don't buy a lot of eggs anyway.

Eggs are not $9 in the extremely beugie area of CA that I live in. maroons are buying them 4+ dozen at a time though

I got a 3lb bag for $5 at Fresh Mkt but they were very soft under the skin and I mentioned to the members in my house, "eat'em quick"
We got down most of the bag minus 1
Had to throw it out as it went citrus-BAD which means it smells even though it doesn't look rotten until you lift it up and realize it's green and white underneath
Wasn't but a few days in the house.

I usually pay $4/lb at Publix and they don't rot nearly as fast

Sorry to interrupt but this is a pet peeve. If you're not buying pasture raised organic eggs then it doesn't matter what you're buying. "Cage free", "Free range", "All-natural" etc, all are just marketing gimmicks. Don't even look at that because it's nonsense and just buy the cheapest they have unless you're buying pasture raised organic which are much better for you and taste infinitely better. We were forced to buy a dozen cage free a few weeks back and they had no taste. Spend the extra few bucks and buy the Vital farms PR-organic eggs and thank me later. At 12.99 for 18 of them it's still a pretty good deal seeing the number of meals you get out of it. If you have no palate and just eat crap all the time please disregard.

At 12.99 for 18 of them it's still a pretty good deal seeing the number of meals you get out of it. If you have no palate and just eat crap all the time please disregard.

Eggs from cage free hens are the only ones that can be sold in California

Sorry to interrupt but this is a pet peeve. If you're not buying pasture raised organic eggs then it doesn't matter what you're buying. "Cage free", "Free range", "All-natural" etc, all are just marketing gimmicks.
