Harper to Tennessee (1 Viewer)

Titans signed CB Nick Harper to a three-year contract.

In the process, Tennessee steals a solid starter from an intradivision rival, but Harper doesn't have any recent experience in the man-to-man defense the Titans run. Still, they need insurance because Pacman Jones' status for 2007 is uncertain. Terms of the deal are unknown.

Oh, OK if this was covered in the "Tennessee has a plan" thread , then nevermind........

Bein gas I am not much of a Titans fan, I posted this for the rest of us who just go by the title.

*Bump* or whatever you have to.....this thread can die out now

Nothing wrong with a separate thread for Harper. It'll be interesting to see if the Titans play as much man-to-man if Jones doesn't return with Harper on board. Harper improved last year, especially on underneath and medium routes, but he'll get burned deep if left on an island.

I suppose then they'll have to get a safety as well....

Good pick-up for the Titans, they need verteran leadership for their secondary. If Pacman can't play, they could have been faced with Hill and Finnegan as their starting CB's backed up by rookies. They'll take a couple of young guys in the draft at CB, so hopefully Harper can help mentor them and provide some steady play. Subtracts from the Colts' defense a little bit too, which helps Tenn.

I think the Colts let him go, due in part that they have a man-crush on Bob Sanders. And while Sanders is good...don't get me wrong...the guy has a problem staying healthy for full seasons IIRC.

I think the Titans got a good D player with experience and leadership to help bring that Defense together as a unit, and a guy with a ring on his finger is just the type of thing you need to bring desire to the younger players.

If this team can make just 1 or 2 solid moves before the draft, they could be a very exciting team.

My only worry is the WR spot. Can Jones and whoever they have supply enough of a threat to help VY out?

I don't see what not re-signing Harper has to do the Colts' opinion of Bob Sanders. They play different positions, and Sanders isn't a FA this year. The Colts didn't re-sign Harper because they believe that Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden can step up and take his place. We'll see if they are right next season.

I just think that they put to much stock in Sander's abilty to provide help to the corners, he is more of a run-stopping player to me. Unlike Polamalu who is able to fly all over the filed to let the corners stay deep. - just my opinion, not fact.

OK. I think that is why Antoine Bethea beat out Mike Doss as the other safety, because Bethea is relatively good coverage safety to complement Sanders' strengths. Doss is basically a lesser version of Sanders.

In the last two years they loaded up on CB in the draft with I think 3 1st and 2nd rounds picks in Jackson, Hayden and Jennings. This one has been coming for two years. Not a Sanders thing. just time to use the CB's they picked and take a chance on letting a over 30 CB go test the market.

Hey DJ (or other Colt homers), I haven't heard much on the progression of Tim Jennings. What's the scoop there? Ankle thing still an issue. Just not ready yet?

I've heard little about him since he was drafted. He's clearly the #4 CB behind Jason David, Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden. One small possible glimpse that the Colts might think something of Jennings is that Jason David only was re-signed with a 4th-round tender, whichi really surprised me (I thought he'd get signed to a 2nd round tender). I would think this would mean that they think Jennings could become the nickel back if needed next season, because I could see a team go out and sign David to an offer sheet that the Colts can't match if that team only has to give up a 4th round pick.On the other hand, the Colts have drafted a lot of defensive backs in the Polian era, and there have been a lot of 2nd to 4th round busts in that category. Though, to be fair, mostly before Dungy became coach.

As a Colts fan I have no problem at all in losing Harper. It's not like we are talking about Champ Bailey here guys. The Colts have some young talent to take his place with no problem at all.

I agree somewhat. There may indeed be some problems. But they did have a plan and replacements already on the roster.
