Some people have complained that they hate when the game ends with successive kneel downs by the offense to run the remaining time off the clock. Here's an option for a rule change which would eliminate this.

In the last 5 minutes of either half, when the offense runs a play which results in negative yardage, (the new line of scrimmage is behind the previous line of scrimmage), the clock is stopped and does not start again until the ball is snapped. This would eliminate the kneel downs at the end of games as the offense would have to get at least 1 yard to keep the clock running.

They do that in Arena football. Maybe that is your sport.Kneel downs are cool. They call it the "Victory Formation" for a reason.

Let's presume this is a legitimate issue (which I don't think it is).

5 minutes is entirely too long for this. 2 minute warning on, maybe.

Sacks would stop the clock? That would just help a team trying to come back at the end.

I like it but I also like kneel downs when the Pats are doing it, lol. On the flip side, I'd like to see field goals over 55 yards count as 4 points in the last 2 minutes. So a team that is down 4 can choose that option at the end. Maybe FG's over 60 could be 5 points. No more time outs right when the kicker is about to kick either, that's lame.

The rule is rediculous and will make no sense.Simple, If you surrender yourself behind the line of scrimmage at any part of the game, the clock stops. Keep it simple.

Part of the game is clock management and how you manage your timeouts. Kneel downs are perfectly legit and don't take anything away from the game. They actually add some strategy for the coaches.

I would love to see this rule for the last 2 minutes of the game. It's disappointing to me when a really close game isn't even interesting for the last minute or 2. Although I realize this is a matter of personal preference, I'm all for rules that encourage competition throughout the game without compromising the spirit of the game. In the same vein, I hate it when fans and players complain about a team "running up the score." These guys prepare like crazy all week for a 60 minute game. Don't take any of that away from them.

In the NBA, all that silliness stretches the game out, when often, the game is already decided. Victory Formation in the NFL does the opposite.Lot's a good stuff in this thread - any change would be absolutley ridiculous. There is already a play clock to stop teams from taking too long. As has been said, use your timeouts wisely or score more points in the rest of the game. This is just silly.

On a side note: When teams go into the Victory formation and they put a player deep. This tends to be a WR or RB. Why wouldn't you put in a safety or CB? Someone with excellent speed and that has tackling skills too in case something like Miracle in the Meadowlands happens again.

This, while sounding correct is actually part of the problem. Why would a team end up with no timeouts in the final two minutes of a close game?Answer: Because the "exciting/game deciding drive" already happened. The "desperate defensive plays" or "desperate offense trying to score" already failed - with 3 or 4 minutes left in the game, typically. Teams don't suddenly wake up and go "Oh, there's another two minutes?" The way they have played to that point already has determined whether they won or lost. When the team that is behind goes for it on 4th and 3 with 2:30 and 1 timeout left, it is that exciting play/drive that has decided the game - not the kneel downs. The kneel downs are simply a function of the fact that the outcome of the game has already been decided by the teams' play up to that point.

After the 2 minute warning, when the team that's ahead has the ball they should always be required to pass and must gain at least 10 yards on the play. If they fail to gain the 10 yards for any reason (sack, incompletion, gain of 9 or fewer yards), they must punt on the next play regardless what down it is. This will keep the game entertaining for fans to the very end and give the team that's behind a real chance to come back most of the time.

yes - all rules should be the same in the first 5 - the middle 5 - and the last 5
