HBO Series "The Night Of" (1 Viewer)

I'm thinking it was the mean looking black dude with the witness who, if turned upside down, would have weed pouring out of his pockets.

He took a long, mean look at the door after Naz and the girl went inside.
that's where i am too.

the Weed Out of Pockets witness kinda balked in his interview w/ the Detective [paraphrasing]:

Detective: "Were you alone?"

Witness: "Yes."

why lie about that?

I mean, I imagine the code of "no snitchin" would likely motivate folks to not include their friends in a murder investigation, but ya, that was sketchy as hell.

Probably a red herring. Someone on reddit supposed that his look back towards the apartment was a look of concern, that he noticed someone in the house looking out the window.

I need to try again......I couldn't get past how dumb and completely ####ed this guy is when I watched EP 1.

I think I'll like it if I give it another chance.

:lmao: I hope this is a reference to the Jordan tagless Hanes undershirt commercial at the movies, when the tag goes flying into the soda for spoiling the movie.

OK, so this guy who probably never takes drugs suddenly doses up with XTC/MDMA, it's believable this guy can't drive but in fact all he did was make a wrong turn...again a NYC police officer goes off the rail on a cab driver over a left turn? And no they never read him any rights and just keep him in their police car which would never happen except that he's maybe Muslim? I'm trying to flesh out if as a viewer if I am supposed to feel something for this character on the sole idea he might be Middle Eastern? They had the black guy make a bombs joke as he walked by.

What happened to Black guy #2 who stared him down? That guy was gone when the police were talking to the joke guy.
I was wondering this....he gave a drug dealer type of vibe....

literally carrying the murder weapon.
We're unsure of that at the moment.  Provided we're not being misled by the footage, we're fairly certain that was the knife he stabbed her hand with, however we're unsure as to whether the knife was the source of any further wounds.

6.5/10 thus far.  I'm hoping it picks up b/c the second episode was meh.
I'm with you it's OK... I don't think it's must see TV at this point.   What I found interesting was there was blood on the deer head they were taking samples of... not sure how it got up there.

Gonna watch but don't get the adoration for the pilot.  Was basically a 48 hours murder mystery to me.  A little too slow, predictable and plodding.

that said, if John Turtorro plays a major role, I'll watch, just for that.
This is where I am.  Thought the first ep was weak but necessary to lay the plot foundation.  Another character that has to make stupid decisions to create drama?  Ugh.  I also hate having to imagine that this character lives in some alternate universe where there are no crime dramas that teach you to shut up and demand a lawyer when you're brought in.

BUT - now that the foundation has been laid, I think I'm really going to like this.  Turtorro is amazing, the gritty feel of the show really draws you in, and the supporting characters all seem realistic.

As long as Rikers isn't depicted as "Oz" or filled with wise old grizzled black guys that are tough on the outside but really have hearts of gold underneath, I think I'll be happy.

Exactly.  They even made an off-handed comment that the stab wounds loosely matched the size of the size of the knife by an inch or whatever.  I don't remember the specifics, but I remember the point was that the stab wounds didn't exactly match the knife, but it was...you know...close enough.

That ain't the knife that killed her.

"Within a quarter inch of the wounds"

I like everyone trying to solve the mystery when it doesnt appear this show is a mystery at all. Just a point A to point Z procedural on a murder investigation.

I also liked the black thugs in the court room with the "damn" look

Finally, WTF is the point of the eczema? So gross

Not sure about the eczema, pretty nasty.

But regarding the mystery, I wholeheartedly disagree.

Finding out who actually killed her, or at least creating a plausible scenario to plant the seed of reasonable doubt, will be absolutely critical in the trial/prosecution of Naz.

This show has shades of "The Killing", but hopefully much better writing and a better payoff.

Watched the second episode again. The guy who plays Box is excellent.

The show does a good job of showing the boredom, exhaustion and tedium involved for cops and inmates. I've been entranced by both episodes so far.

I guess I am not convinced he will get off at the end of the series.

Sorry.

I meant for the probable cause analysis, "the defendant was found concealing a knife on his person that appeared to have a significant amount of what appeared to be blood on it and the size of the knife was consistent, based on the investigating officer's training and experience, with the wounds found on the victim."

I agree.....there was a split second moment in E2 when the desk Sargent changed shifts.  It was subtle but really great film making IMHO.   No communication between the two men, just movement.

It would be interesting if they fool us all, get a quick confession from Nas and turn this into OZ 2.0 showing his struggle with life at Rikers.

Favorite moment in episode 2:

The arraignment scene.  Loved the judge.  As the charges are being read, Naz stands there like a deer in the headlights and the other "perp" waiting on the bench for his arraignment looks on in disbelief saying "#### me."

:lmao:

Also....the guy playing the lead detective is pretty fun to watch.

Loved Gandolfini but I can't imagine him in this role. Anyone know if they changed the character after they re-cast?

Rewatched the second episode. Didn't catch the first time that the step father is the guy that played Mickey Doyle on Boardwalk Empire.

You heard it here first, she killed herself in order to frame the muslim kid and get the Donald elected.
She was clearly up against something in her life. Sounded kind of bottom rung-y; resigned to something bad. My first thought was she might have stabbed herself but I think we saw a stab wound to her back, no? If not, stabbing herself isn't inconceivable considering how she seemed to get off on knife play and being stabbed through the hand.

The talk about him "only" having a couple tequila shots and a bump. We don't know what the bump was, and more importantly we don't know what the pill was. I'm guessing a toxicology report is going to show a tranquilizer along the lines of rohipnol.

Have only seen the pilot, but that was freaking incredible tension.

Big fan of Richard Price. Loved Lush Life.

The guy playing Box is fantastic. Naz, too.

And that chick was right in 20-something year old me's wheelhouse.

Thank you.  It has been bugging me all week.
It was driving me nuts last Sunday. I checked imdb before the episode was even half over. The character is so different that I don't know that I ever would have placed it otherwise.

I watched the first episode twice, but didn't re-watch the second. I think in the last episode I saw something with the CSI guys collecting evidence that didn't jive with the events in episode one, unless there was something there prior. Anyone else notice this, or maybe I missed something in episode one?

maybe a small spoiler

I thought they were swabbing what looked like blood off of the deer head right by the eyeball. I don't remember anyone coming into contact with it in either episode until then. Did I miss something?

Another solid episode
Totally.  I get that it isn't for everybody.  But, I love the pace.  I'm totally sucked in.  The writing, direction, production are all top notch, and I love the twists and turns.  It's not a roller coaster ride, and if that's what you're looking for, you can do something else with your 9pm on Sunday nights.  But, if you want good story telling and investment in the characters, this has been fantastic.
