HC Mike McCarthy, FA - The Countdown in Dallas has ended, where to next? (1 Viewer)

I feel like the last head coach who won as much as he did in the regular season that faced so much public heat for their coaching job was Marty Schottenheimer, and even he did not have 3 straight seasons like MM just had.

I don't see any way they fire McCarthy mid season other than to just have a scape goat so Jerry doesn't have to own any of the responsibility
I was surprised they didn't seem to get any better in the off season and they'll be luck to scrape 9-10 wins at the rate they are going right now

The OL is not that good and their DL doesn't dictate a lot of the plays and they are getting manhandled by the better teams in the trenches
Who would you blame for the OL and DL challenges this season? How about a lack of punch at Running Back?

Sincerely,

A frustrated fan base💭

What’s left to gain by sticking with Mike McCarthy moving forward?
—The Cowboys weren’t the only decimated team on the field tonight so miss me with that excuse.

How many more times do we have to watch this team get embarrassed in their biggest games each year before the FO says enough is enough?

The Defense gets a pass because even despite being decimated, they brought the energy we keep calling for & there were some very deliberate & DRASTIC adjustments made over the bye.
—on top of that way too many second half 3 & outs made their job impossible.

The offense is just more of the same pre snap stagnance, boring gun run, & Right Handed QB rolling left on 3rd & 4.

It’s time to do something different.
Because NOT doing something different clearly doesn’t work.

I just don't see McCarthy as the problem. You know what you're getting - McCarthy isn't an All-Pro at coach but he's a Pro Bowler (maybe second ballet). Certainly an above average coach.

The rot is in ownership and it takes a miracle coach to fix that. And those coaches won't work for Jerry.

The only reason Parcells did is that he needed money after going through a divorce. And he could only handle it for a few years.

The original title was "Countdown to The End" and then he/Dallas went 12-5 three seasons in a row and you would think it all works out fine
We have rolled it back to the original title

ok but why? It's funny, I was on my way to the cowboys thread to ask this very question but when I searched for it this thread came up first and I decided to come in here and mention Jerry likes Kliff Kingsbury but this seems like as good as any. I'm not a Dallas fanboy or anything though I do want them to succeed since I own a few boys in dynasty, I've heard the "Jones is the problem!" and maybe he is. I'm not sure. Yes, he's made some boneheaded decisions lately (I'm thinking mostly Lance and Mingo here) but does he make more bad draft choices and bad trades than other gms? I'm probably not well informed so I'm curious here.

If the Cowboys had any intentions of keeping McCarthy he wouldn't be a lame duck coach. However, unlike the idiots in New York, Jones isn't so stupid to tear it down during the season and have the team quit. Once that type of funk hits the locker room, it's tough to get rid of.

Get the funk out!

People don’t realize that Mike McCarthy is actually a free agent & can sign anywhere…are we SURE he wants to go back to Dallas?

The Chicago Bears should be lurking around…it may sound crazy, but hear me out.

-Knows division well
-Develops QB almost better than anyone
-Leader
I've been actually thinking to myself for a few weeks that Chicago was an ideal spot for him for many of the same reasons he is listing here, most notably the confidence I have in him to develop Caleb which is key to everything. I just did not have the courage to say it and withstand everyone telling me I'm out of my mind or how they'd stop being Bears fan if they did something like that. Not saying he'd be my first choice if I was them, but he'd be way up on the list of favored candidates.

McCarthy to the Bears would be the most hilarious thing ever and basically ensure their irrelevancy for years to come. I hope this happens!

Yup.

Remember when McCarthy went to Dallas and Packer fans said “watch out, this guy sucks at clock mgmt and isn’t a good coach?” And we all got shouted down. Took what, 5-6 games before people realized that McCarthy is a bum?

I remember, as an Eagles' fan, being thrilled the day he signed with Dallas because I thought it was quite apparent from his time in GB that he was a terrible coach.

Yet Dallas fans were excited about the hire.

Anyone else remember when McCarthy got hired and said he spent his entire year off studying every team, every play, every scheme?

And then he later admitted it was all a lie, that he just said it because it sounded good in a job interview with Jerry. He should have been fired right then, on the spot.

I feel like this is that Spiderman meme. The Cowboys GM, the Cowboys owner and the Cowboys coach all pointing at each other over who's fault it was they didn't make the playoffs.

It was a job interview... he wasn't on trial. I would be very surprised to find out that he was the first person ever to embellish their resume to try and get a job. Very surprised.

He manipulated the boss. And the boss is too dumb to know it.

You gotta fake it until you make it.

Jerry Jones runs his football team for clickbait, headlines, and $$$ return. He's not trying to win a Super Bowl, because obviously there's much more $$$ value in saying that you're trying to win a Super Bowl. Winning it ends all that. They have the luxury of an inexplicably huge fanbase that isn't going anywhere no matter what the Owner does. As long as they're making headlines Jerry is happy. If he was manipulated by Mike McCarthy it was because he wanted to be. It's more interesting that way.

Raiders falling right into this same category. Huge, loyal fanbase dating back to the 1970s. And very easy to see them executing a plan to land the Sanders father/son duo. I don't think it's in the best interest of winning a championship... but I can't think of a better way to generate headlines and sell lots of tickets, merch, TV interest, etc.

old Army saying...."if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bull****" .....Mike Mac AND JJ both Pro's at this

Dallas is a joke of an organization. Why deny permission? Either re-sign the guy or let him talk to other teams. Jerry Jones is a clown.
I assume he’s coming back and they are just working out the details.
But yeah, everyone knows that JJ is a clown
I assume he is coming back also, but on a one year deal. Actually, three straight 12-5 seasons was pretty good. This year the wheels came off early and blew up the whole show. So many injuries and to most of the "stars". New D coordinator took half the year for the players to figure out the system. O-line was a wreck. No production at RB until last third of the season. Only one good WR all year. If everyone comes back next year, including McCarthy, and they are healthy, I could see another 12-5 season. Now the playoffs, that's another story. Is that on the coach, Dak or what ? They need to figure that out next year or blow the whole things up.

You don't lame duck your head coach, he should have been re-signed last offseason.

I agree, but that is not Jerry's style. He likes to wait until the last minute to make decisions. That way he gets to pay top dollar to his players and leaves his coaches feeling anxious.

Should have been re-signed or should have resigned?
