someone drafted 8 kickers, 1 DT, and 2 DE.I'm sure it's nice to have 7 backup kickers to play matchups and cover injuries/byes, but kind of sucks to not have any backups on the defensive line.
Having a backup DT is senseless.
why? you can start 2 if your LBs get decimated with injuries or bye weeks.most backup DTs look like they scored about 7pts/week last year. That's about the same average as most LB5s, which is really your top backup if you start 4 each week.

And those "7pt" DT's can be had on the WW, so no need to carry an extra one at all imo.Now 9 kickers? GENIUS

maybe, maybe not.still, he also has no backups at DE, and only 1 backup at CB and S. Sure, there are WW options available at those spots but nothing too good with a 53-man roster and 16 teams.

Aaron Kampman FTW.
oh. well, there you go then.I guess he(you)'ll have some very easy decisions on cutdown day at least.

Dont worry. He could be down to 5 by kickoff. Lawrence over Barth, Tiffin over Dawson, not sure Graham even has a job right now. Add in Gano that one never knows about and some mediocre PK's even with the rest. NOpe I dont like it

The fact that the kickers may not even make their respective team's makes the stragetgy even worse.

I would call it more "schtick" than strategy......
I was being kind with using the word "strategy".So the guy's schtick was to sink his team's chances long term. My kudos to that schtickster.

Not sure drafting 8 kickes instead of CB's or DT's or 49th string WR's is gonna sink his team, not my style, but far from sinking his team imo.Maybe a year or two from now we can go back and see how many players that were drafted after his 3rd kicker are still relevant in the fantasy football world, could be interesting.

I don't think it's a big deal in the big picture, but for me personally, I'd much rather draft 5 prospects and hope one hits. You may not find anything, but you also could find the next Pierre Garcon.

Did you not realise that these kickers have craaaaazzzzzyyyyy trade value. This guy might have just drafted the next Mason Crosby.

Sinking the team is hyperbole for sure - and I agree most players picked at that range will end up being useless. However wouldn't one rather take a chance at uncovering a gem rather than load up on kickers?

[qu

I agree 100%, but like Fruity pebbles said, draft 53, with 3 taxi takes it down to 50, 45 at beginning of season, so 5 players will be dropped for sure.

I agree that i would rather have 5 prospects also, but honestly, most of these latter round guys will be dropped come roster cutdown day, so why not have a little fun with the kicker move? Now if he keeps all 8 come start of the season, THAT would be assinine, but time will tell......

You laugh...I saw a trade made last August...Crosby for Steve Smith (NYG)

This thread has gone completely off the tracks, so let's put an end to it and get back to talking about the real draft that happened.

This started out as getting sick of weeding through a bunch of garbage players and then noticing that a few teams had no kickers at all. By the time I decided to pull the trigger, there was one team left without a kicker. And my hate for him runs deep - here's to you, Switzerland ;)

Being that the crapfest was mind numbingly boring, I had my roster pretty much filled out, and I had a bunch of double picks in the late rounds, I decided to take a shot and screw Tony out of not getting a kicker. I'd then just hold them for ransom until he really needed the kicker. Of course he was smart enough to see it after I had 6 or so, and grabbed one of the very last kickers. So I'm stuck with a bag full of kickers. So what. I'll take my team over more than half of the other teams in the league, even with all these kickers. Tony's lucky he's not on the schedule... :bag:

Winning with 8 kickers is going to be that much better with all the haters out there. :hey:

This post is almost sig worthy. :lmao:I understand there are not a whole lot of good players late in 53 round drafts, but there are some players in the last few rounds that will hit. It just seems like a waste to draft 8 kickers when you will have to cut at least half of them. There will be a Pierre Garcon or Arian Foster or Matt Moore in the late rounds somewhere. It seems like a better risk to me. I do like your overall team though, but I'd rather use a late round pick on someone who may be able to make my roster or taxi squad.By the way, you are on the schedule twice in RD. :(

Maybe you can trade 1 for Lendale White?

Now this thing is over, here's my team and my approach:

I did very little trading in this draft, because I was more curious about how all the wheeling and dealing would play out. I also liked my spot at the turn. I decided not to focus on big-time rookies or young upside players if there were offensive players and key defensive players on the board with solid-strong fantasy starter skills for the next 2-3 years. My main youth movement was at DE, because I think it was one of the strengths of this rookie class.

I like to take veteran LBs in IDP leagues and I believe I landed decent to strong players. If my mid-round RBs work out, I could be competitive this year and next as I continue to build for the future.

QBs

Davis, Nate SFO QB 27.16 - One of my favorite young QBs from last year's class.

Edwards, Trent BUF QB 20.13 - Chan Gailey has said he thinks Edwards career as a starter is salvageable. This late in the game, I'll take that chance with Manning as durable as he has been, and he still has 3-4 good years left in him.

Hoyer, Brian NEP QB 33.16 - I think it's a pretty big statement from the Pats that they made Hoyer their No.2 as a rookie despite Brady still recovering from the knee injury. Another one of my fave sleepers from last year's QB class.

Manning, Peyton IND QB 1.16 - He's the safest regular season QB in fantasy football and his down field aggressiveness is a nice match with this league scoring system. If he actually has to play in the final two games, he could be the top QB from wire to wire. If I'm in the hunt, Manning could be the biggest fantasy risk at QB since the Colts have been so strong in their division.

RB

* Baker, Toney FA RB 46.01 - One of my fave long shot picks. Reminds me of Leroy Hoard. We'll see if it pans out.

* Bell, Joique FA RB 38.01 - He already sent Walter Mendenhall packing. Let's see if he can make it easier for the Bills to do the same with Lynch.

Brown, Ronnie MIA RB (P) 8.01 - Never seems to be healthy but when he is, he has the talent and the perfect situation to be a top 10 fantasy RB.

Dixon, Anthony SFO RB ® 14.15 - I think Gore is special, but betting on him to have another 3-4 years of starter play isn't realistic. I like Dixon's skills.

Johnson, Gartrell NYG RB 43.16 - Another long shot, but if Ware and Jacobs can't stay healthy (not a big if), Johnson might become the default No.2.

Maroney, Laurence NEP RB 12.01 - The Pats not drafting an RB with Faulk, Morris, and Taylor the verge of retirement is what I believe is a positive statement about Maroney showing signs of turning the corner. If he does, I think he's a strong RB2 with upside.

Peerman, Cedric CIN RB 28.01 - What did you expect?

Tomlinson, LaDainian NYJ RB 20.01 - I think he has red zone potential and he's behind such a good line, it's hard not to take a shot on him at 20.01. I really believe his versatility lands him the red zone role. I also believe Sanchez will need another year before he really comes into his own, which means more dump offs to Tomlinson in the flat.

Williams, Carnell TBB RB 11.16 - A full year of health to knock off the rust is something I think will help Cadillac get back to full speed.

Williams, Ricky MIA RB 7.16 - At best, Williams and Brown are in one of the few situations to be fantasy starters playing in the same backfield. At works, I should land the starting back this year.

WR

Garcon, Pierre IND WR 6.01 - Very happy with Garcon as my WR3, because he could wind up a WR1 within the next two seasons.

Gettis, David CAR WR ® 39.16 - I think he has more upside than LaFell. At 39.16, the risk is low.

Konz, Jameson SEA WR ® 45.16 - See above about the high upside, low-risk angle. I expect him to be a TE, which is why I picked him.

Meier, Kerry ATL WR ® 32.01 - Michael Jenkins' replacement with higher upside? Very possible.

Moss, Randy NEP WR 4.01 - He probably has 2-3 years left in the tank and Brady should be sharper this year.

Ochocinco, Chad CIN WR 5.16 - I'll let everyone else remember the two poor games against Revis. He was a solid WR1 for much of 2009 and I think he has 2-3 good years left.

Roberts, Andre ARI WR ® 17.16 - My fave rookie WR in this draft. Won't likely do much this year or next.

Williams, Mike SEA WR 29.16 - See my article on fantasy dumpster diving.

TE

Gates, Antonio SDC TE 2.01 - Best value on the board for this league where I was drafting? I thought so.

Moeaki, Tony KCC TE ® 14.01 - Looks like he could start and I liked his all-around game in a rookie class that is deep with TE talent.

Quarless, Andrew GBP TE ® 48.01 - Finley has never been a complete TE. Quarless could be a sneaky pick, and at no risk this late.

Wilson, Kris SDC TE 44.01 - This guy is the Mewelde Moore of NFL tight ends. If he ever gets a real shot, which he could if Gates gets hurt, he has the receiving skills to be a a viable fantasy starter.

K

Vinatieri, Adam IND PK (P) 41.16 - I leave kicker analysis to Mike Herman. If healthy, he might have a few more years on a good offense.

DT

Gilbert, Jarron CHI DT 50.01 - An upside pick. I'll find someone else as the season gets under way.

DE

Graham, Brandon PHI DE ® 15.02 - My favorite rookie DE in this class. I think I landed a future DE stud.

Hardy, Greg CAR DE ® 53.16 - A swing for the fences with a highly rated college DE in 2008 who disappointed in '09. Landed w/a good team.

Little, Leonard STL DE 52.01 - He could tide me over if my rookies need a year.

Morgan, Derrick TEN DE ® 13.16 - Good situation and possibly the best all-around DE in this rookie class that's studded with talent.

Schofield, O'Brien ARI DE ® 35.16 - Once he recovers from the ACL tear, he'll be an OLB entering 2011. I can wait on his potential.

Vanden Bosch, Kyle DET DE 21.16 - When healthy, he's productive.

Worilds, Jason PIT DE ® 31.16 - He'll be an OLB and I love his potential. He's Freeney-quick and in a great defense. Could be a steal 2-3 years from now.

LB

Adibi, Xavier HOU LB 49.16 - Not counting on him to fulfill his athletic potential, but with Cushing's situation, Adibi could contribute. Late depth for me.

Curran, Rennie TEN LB ® 26.01 - The future MLB or WLB in Tennessee by 2012. UGA LBs tend to be pretty good and Curran is very instinctive.

Ellerbe, Dannell BAL LB 25.16 - Another UGA LB who showed something after as a UDFA. Competing for a starting job and I think he could succeed Ray Lewis if he continues to develop.

Ellison, Keith BUF LB 51.16 - Showed something before he got hurt last year.

Harris, David NYJ LB7.14 - A productive cog in the Jets great defense that has another strong year in store.

Merriman, Shawne SDC LB 22.01 - A gamble, but I liked taking it here.

Vilma, Jonathan NOS LB 8.04 - A smart player in a good situation with a few years of strong athleticism left combined with veteran maturity.

Willis, Patrick SFO LB 3.16 - Best fantasy LB going right now.

CB

Jenkins, Mike DAL CB 40.01 - Talented enough to cover primary receivers, but not yet good enough to shut them down. We'll see if it pans out.

Lacey, Jacob IND CB 37.16- Based on last year's stats I took him, plus the Colts are usually in shootouts or playing with a nice lead.

Trufant, Marcus SEA CB 47.16 - When he was last healthy, he was a fantasy starter with his production. He's healthy again...

S

Allen, Nate PHI S ® 34.01 - Hoping that this projected replacement for Dawkins will lead to Dawkins-like production in 2-3 years.

Chancellor, Kam SEA S ® 36.01 Early impressions from teammates is shock at how athletic he is. Could be a developmental steal.

Dawkins, Brian DEN S 23.16 - I love picking old vets like him. Sammy Knight was a guy I picked until he retired. Dawkins is that kind of bet.

Jones, Chad NYG S ® 42.01 - Great athlete and if the light comes on, which I think it will, he could be a find.

Scott, Bryan BUF S 30.01 - Very productive when healthy.

Sharper, Darren NOS S (P)24.01 - Why not? He's expected to play the same role in Nawlins as long as the microfracture surgery doesn't limit him. It might, but DBs tend to be easy finds if he doesn't work out.

QB

Favre- I am a believer that he will come back this year, and at 10:12 and the 22nd QB taken, I will roll the dice on a QB that should finish in the top 5, even if it is a 1 year rental.

Orton

Quinn

I don't think Tebow will ever be a typical QB in the NFL so taking these 2 in the 15/16 RD's made me feel like I am securing a QB position in DEN

Brohm Borbs told me this was probably the worst pick in the draft (or at least mine), I tend to agree now looking back. I could have taken several other guys who had more upside.

Bulger He will sign somewhere and provide a solid back up that should be able to garner the confidence of any HC when he sees the field. In the 35th RD and 655 player taken, as soon as he signs somewhere his value will jump up pretty high.

Culpepper Meh, 53rd RD, if he is in the NFL he is worth a roster spot in this deep of a league.

Flynn,LBrown, Daniel, Snead, Canfield Just a typical shot in the dark type of picks.

Overall at QB I am old and have no depth.

I like to take as many players as possible, if any get a single shot, their value rises instantly as opposed to getting a WR/RB who has 1 good game and has a small sell window. I have had much success in the pass just stashing no name QB's who I was able to package in deals to get good quality players in return or even just to move as spot starters for 3rd,4th RD picks in future drafts. Guys like Cassell, Fitzpatrick, Carr, Leftwitch etc....

RB

Turner-Not a super sexy pick, especially in a PPR league, but 2 years ago, he finished RB2 and last year, after week 9, he was RB6. I feel he can finish anywhere between RB3-7 this year, and at 3.07 he provides great value. I could have gone Wells, Nicks, Greene, Charles but I felt Turner was safer and could pay big dividends this year.

Hardesty I am not thrilled he is my RB2, but I do think he has a good chance to emerge as the primary ball carrier. I could have gone Choice, Lynch, MBush, DMac but I felt Hardesty had the most updside.

Lynch I considered him in the 10th when I took Hardesty, so i jumped on him here. Granted his stock is VERY low, but if he is 24 and could find a new team, maybe even this year. If he lands in SEA, and this draft was held in AUG he would be picked about 50-60 players higher. A very boom/bust pick, I think Lynch will either be starting successfully somewhere next year, or fighting for an NFL roster.

Mcknight 20th RD pick, Jets have a good running game, hopefully he takes over the Leon role, and provides a solid plug in starter type role on a team netting 60 total yards and the occasional TD, even if it comes on special teams.

Jennings Good talent, simply a good value should MJD go down.

DWard I don't love the RB situation in TB, and feel Ward has as good a shot as anyone there to get 10-15 carries per game.

Morris See above, but just not as high on him

Kolby Smith Don't think he has great talent, but he is a 25 year old RB with good experience and well worth a shot after most teams have their 2nd K

JLewis If he has a job come Sept, this pick was worth it in RD48

Overall, I will need to have someone emerge as RB2 from this group or I will be starting Heap as my Flex.

If Turner gets hurt or has a bad year, this could get very ugly no one other than Hardesty shows any sort of long term value.

WR

Fitzgerald He is the rock of my team, hopefully he will not be effected too much with the departure of Warner/Boldin but I can't help think he will suffer, but his talent is too much to pass on.

SMoss I like this value in the end of the 8th RD, and think he could provide great numbers as my WR2

Tate I like his overall talents, and expect SEA to suck and throw the ball abit, hopefully he learns his routes and can see a good amount of action this year.

Evans

Didn't want to own him, but I could not pass up a WR who is the clear #1 on his team with his athletic ability and talent.

Roy Williams So I own the 2 most overrated WR in FF. WR's are always a hot buy, I figure if he strings along a few good games, there will be someone who wants to buy him for their WR injury plagued team that will start every week. He still has a good name to sell and at RD19 worth the risk.

Caldwell Getting crowded in CIN, and Caldwell showed some flashes last year

Stuckey

No WR's in CLE scream stud, if Stuckey lands a slot role he could be a spot starter.

Hardy Former 1st RD FF pick entering his 3rd year...y not

Cooper potential TAXI spot for me

Coles Another player whose value will rise once he signs, and I feel he will.

Amendola, Mckinley, Clowney just long shots

Overall, I feel comfortable with starting 3 from this crew. Startup 16 team drafts, leave many teams with holes everywhere. I think I have long and short term production with these guys.

TE

Winslow I could have gone in may directions with 3.05 with a younger player, but I wanted to secure a TE that had fire power. Winslow has shown he could be a top 7 TE. I juts hope he can stay healthy.

Heap They have a few younger guys behind him, but he is still 30 and the starter in an offense that is spreading open. If healthy he will actually be very serviceable and good value in RD18

Overall, I need more TE's.

I don't like that I only have 2 and they are olderish, TE can single handily win you many games. I will need to reinforce this position.

PK

Buhler

Starting K for a high powered DAL offense. Good enough for me. I will get my backup when Chadick drops his 7 K's.

DT

NONE

Every year i pick up a top 10 DT on WW, don't even want to waste a roster spot at this point on 1.

DE

Allen

Peppers DE is a very valuable position, being their are only 5-6 top guys, then everyone else gets thrown into a mixer. These are the best 2 on any roster at the moment. I could have gone with WR/RB at these draft spots, (Ocho, Welker, Meachem, Pierre (both), but I felt, why go for the 20th ranked XX, when I could have the best DE who can outscore each of them.

Geathers Plug in depth

Overall, I am happy having the best DE's in the league. Trading for a top DE is harder than you would think.

LB

Beason at 4.12 it may have been a tad early, even though Willis was taken at 3.16, but looking back I probably could have gone with Felix, Maclin type and taken a Rudd type LB 3 RDs later. But having a top 3 LB isn't a bad thing, especially when I see my other LB's

Ray Lewis Yea, he is old, but easy top 20 production is his floor, as my LB 2 I am happy with that.

Black, Hilemeyer, Brown, Adoyle Holy crap, I will have to start 1-2 of these mugs every week. I will be shopping for LB all summer long.

CB

McCourtey, Asomungha, Mathis, just another position I do not value very high. I have no problem plugging in WW CB's each week.

S

Rhodes, Manning I am OK starting these 2 each week, but I value S a bit more higher than CB, but not THAT much more.

Overall, I think I did not hurt my ability to compete this year. I wanted a team that could compete this year, and not a team that was under 25 that could leave me building for 2 more years. I think I am in the position should I be 1-5, I could move some older players to rebuild, and if I am 5-1 I have enough fire power to secure more parts to make a run this year.

Ok, why not, my turn:

QBs: Cutler- last on my list and waited till the 5th, like the upside on him.

Hasselbeck, Delhomme, C.McCoy. Figured that is enough for my backup and some future potential in McCoy.

RBs: Benson, love the value in the 5th

A.Bradshaw, could be a nice sleeper pick for my RB2 with potential RB1 upside.

B.Scott, L.Hamilton, S.McNeal, D.Karim, James Davis. Alot of youth with some upside, not a huge fan of RB's after the first few, can win with lesser ones.

WRs: SSmith(car), Boldin and either Meachem or M.Wallace as my starting 3, love that. J.Morgan, E.Bennett, Robiskie, Stroughter could be helpful as early as this year, but all got potential. A.Brown, MMitchell, Jarrett, K.Moore, Giguere are all shot in the dark type wr's, and with a ton being drafted, nice to have a few "shot in the darks" at end of bench.

TEs: Finley- i consider him to be the TE1 after this season in dynasty formats and 1.5ppr for TE's, so to get him as the 5th TE, i was happy.

Keller in the 6th was just robbery imho.

Z.Miller(jax)- alot of good talk on him, like his potential

Watson- starting TE in the 20th round? Thank you very much.

Ingram, Cottam- Couple of TE's i like, but not sure they will turn out to be much in the NFL

Ks: Grabbed kaeding(my #1K) and Carpenter

DTs: Patterson, Hargrove. Solid DT's

DEs: Cole, the best DE after Allen, finished top 5, 3 years in a row in this format.

Harvey, love his upside for DE2 for me.

Abraham in 24th was good value, will bounce back after last year.

Sidbury, Idonije- Like the youth in Sidbury and potential to start in Idonije

LBs: My strongest position by far imo, had a plan to load up with all my 6th round picks and stuck to it.

Lofton, Mayo, DJ Williams, Poz are my starting 4, gonna be hard pressed to find a better starting 4

T.Scott, M.Peterson are nice backup options and Guyton is meh.

CBs: Figured i would go with an oldie but goodie, C.Woodson scored 230pts last year, that was 56th overall, worth the chance he has a year or two left.

T.Thomas and B.Grimes, youth and upside.

S's: Harper, Tenard Jackson and J.Babineaux. 3 very solid starters.

I didn't have a 1st round pick, but ended up having 13 picks in the first 107 and love how it turned out. Should be in the running for the title this year and not too old, so built for the long haul as well.

2011 picks, i have a 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th and a 5th.

I stumbled on this thread and read the entire thing (well for the most part). This was a great read and really interesting. Hopefully I can use some of the info here to help me in my leagues this year. Good luck to all of you this season and have fun!

Brohm Borbs told me this was probably the worst pick in the draft (or at least mine), I tend to agree now looking back. I could have taken several other guys who had more upside.
My main point was that you should have taken Tarvaris Jackson since you have Favre...even if you aren't a really big fan. He is better than Brohm. However....you do not have to worry about that being the worst pick. You are officially off the hook. See below:

12.07 183. Brian Smith White, LenDale FA RB Tue May 4 9:50:38 p.m. ET 2010 f this guy
Smith's own comment when he made the pick says it all. :coffee: :coffee:

more commentary to follow...

a few criteria used... youth, pedigree & athleticism (also, paying attention to scoring outbursts and splits - like ahmad brooks)...

hopefully better in 1-2 years, but competitive this season...

first dynasty startup with rookies folded in... took one or two at each position, typically in top 3...

waited on defense (obviously), but like who we got and where, for the most part...

keys to the draft could be romo (if he becomes top 3), wells (top 10 potential, maybe top 5 in time) & demaryius thomas...

Romo, Tony DAL QB - 2.15

Sanchez, Mark NYJ QB - 7.08

Tebow, Tim DEN QB - 14.09

Kitna, Jon DAL QB - 36.09

Clemens, Kellen NYJ QB - 46.09

if austin weaponized romo, bryant could be a force multiplier. if edwards & holmes play to their potential, sanchez could have upside. if tebow starts in a year or two, we should have 3 starting QBs, not easy in a 16 team league.

Peterson, Adrian MIN RB - 1.02

Wells, Chris ARI RB - 3.08

Gerhart, Toby MIN RB - 13.08

Scott, Charles PHI RB - 25.08

Johnson, Stafon TEN RB - 37.08

Darby, Kenneth STL RB - 43.08

Toston, Keith STL RB - 45.08

peterson has only played three seasons, and reminds me of eric dickerson. wells could be the next great young RB. gerhart could be startable some weeks with peterson. grab bag of late RBs, hopefully a few make the roster (or go somewhere else), like scott's chances best.

Thomas, Demaryius DEN WR - 4.09

Edwards, Braylon NYJ WR - 5.08

Thomas, Devin WAS WR - 7.02

Avery, Donnie STL WR - 9.02

Decker, Eric DEN WR - 17.08

Cribbs, Josh CLE WR - 20.09

Avant, Jason PHI WR - 26.09

Stallworth, Donte' BAL WR - 33.08

Brown, Reggie TBB WR - 38.09

Foster, Brooks STL WR - FA

some teams in the NFL draft viewed thomas as an elite WR, some didn't. lot of upside if he inherits marshall's role (who he seems to remind mcdaniels of, and was drafted like). edwards has the 15 TD season on his resume, has elite size, speed, athleticism, pedigree, only about 27, and is best positioned for success in his career so far, second season in the system & rapport with sanchez. thomas and avery the two highest drafted third year WRs and among best breakout candidates from class of '08. thomas has special ability and now has mcnabb at QB, and HC shanahan. avery has been playing with one arm tied behind his back - bradford has been called by some scouts one of the best QB prospects of the past decade. decker could start with thomas in 1-2 years, with royal in the slot... could be a great possession WR... cribbs might be the team's most dangerous offensive weapon, with montarrio hardesty... avant one of the best WR3s in the league. mason is in his mid-30s, stallworth could start in 2011 opposite boldin.

Scheffler, Tony DET TE - 8.09

Pettigrew, Brandon DET TE - 9.08

Dickson, Ed BAL TE - 21.08

Hoomanawanui, Michael STL TE - 53.08

scheffler could play a key role in DET... between calvin and best, the middle of the feld could have vast expanses unchecked... pettigrew has nice pedigree and well rounded game, great size, soft hands... as with peterson and gerhart, scheffler & pettigrew may both be startable some weeks, if DET goes with more of a two TE base, to take advantage of the matchup problems created by their positional talent... dickson could emerge in an up 'n coming BAL aerial attack, drafted ahead of pitta.

Janikowski, Sebastian OAK PK - 41.08

Cundiff, Billy BAL PK - 42.09

even our primary K was a 1st rounder... :)

Suh, Ndamukong DET DT - 27.08

Okoye, Amobi HOU DT - 50.09

suh has a chance to be a difference maker at an IDP position that rarely is.

Long, Chris STL DE - 16.09

Pierre-Paul, Jason NYG DE - 22.09

Odrick, Jared MIA DE - 35.08

Jackson, Tyson KCC DE - 39.08

long could be on the verge of a breakout... JPP is an athletic phenom with the freakish natural talent (if giants coaching staff can extract it) to be one of the best players in the 2010 draft (suh and berry super blue chips)...

Woodley, LaMarr PIT LB - 11.08

Timmons, Lawrence PIT LB - 12.09

Weatherspoon, Sean ATL LB - 15.08

Smith, Daryl JAC LB - 18.09

McRath, Gerald TEN LB - 19.08

Phillips, Shaun SDC LB - 28.09

English, Larry SDC LB - 29.08

Wheeler, Philip IND LB - 34.09

Brooks, Ahmad SFO LB - 40.09

Cunningham, Jermaine NEP DE - 48.09

woodley and timmons are just scratching the surface of their potential, getting better and have a lot of upside. weatherspoon should be mid-30's peterson's heir apparent, and would start at SLB in the interim... smith JAXs favorite LB, could be more of a playmaker with a reliable MLB... mcrath should beat out thornton and was very productive at SLB in limited action (i think fastest LB at his combine)... phillips led NFL in FFs (7), english heir apparent to merriman, came from same conference as pennington, leftwich, rothliesberger, i think first defensive player to win conference player of the year (maybe twice?)... wheeler was very productive at end of season... speaking of which, brooks had a scoring outburst last month, freakish athlete (returned kicks in college, similar to urlacher)...

Haden, Joe CLE CB - 31.08

Murphy, Jerome STL CB - 47.08

Carr, Brandon KCC CB - 49.08

Spievey, Amari DET CB - 52.09

haden great athlete, broke state record by passing for 7,000 yards, point guard on state championship hoops team, first played CB in college, good tackler, will get picked on, defense could be on field a lot, AFC North will be passing more... murphy maybe best CB in run support from class of 2010... spievey could start quickly, can tackle and has ball skills...

Meriweather, Brandon NEP S - 23.08

Mays, Taylor SFO S - 24.09

Griffin, Michael TEN S - 30.09

Collins, Nick GBP S - 32.09

Moore, William ATL S - 44.09

meriweather, griffin & collins all young pro bowlers with good pedigree and upside... mays and moore same (minus pro bowls)... mays might be fastest 230 lb. safety ever.

A top 200 pick up in smoke in less than a month. Ouch

Is it me or does everyone make it sound like they have an all pro team lol? Every young prospect is a stud waiting to happen and every 10th round pick is an anchor for years to come.

I think that is pretty normal after a draft. Most of us like our teams and although that may be a bit over the top, I expect people to believe they did well. I like several of my younger players. Also, when I look at everyone's team, I really don't see any team that is exceptionally better than the others. I don't think anyone had an "A" draft, which is a testament to the overall quality of the owners.

Easy to look at it that way. I think you just have to learn to read these types of analysis as "Here's the potential each owner sees in that player." I can tell you with my team that I picked an older team than I desired on offense, but I decided with guys like Anthony taking all the young players I wanted earlier than I would take them, that I would just go older on offense and young on defense. I honestly look at my team as boom-bust.

Part 1:

Normally I turn down invitations to add more leagues – not because I don’t enjoy this hobby, for nothing could be further from the truth – but the reality is that I just don’t have the bandwidth to handle too many leagues. Some would argue that I’m already in too many (I’m sure my wife would agree, as would I most nights I spend setting lineups during the season), but this is my main hobby and there’s nothing quite like a brand new league drafting from scratch. Considering the level of competition in this league (roughly 50% FootballGuys staff plus several very good competitors / Dynasty veterans) and the familiarity I have with the rules and format, I just could not pass on this one.

First off, let’s talk about general strategy as I get ready for this draft. I have to have my rankings done, including rookies (the draft starts right after then NFL Draft is complete), so that’s one frame of reference. Using another league that has done a recent startup draft (I found the DynastyGuys IDP Charter League) also helps give me an idea of what relative order players should go in during a draft (WR30, WR45, etc.). Googling up some other Dynasty rankings along with FootballGuys’ rankings and some depth charts and I’m ready to start drafting – and trading.

A word on the trading here – normally I’m a big fan of auction drafts (especially if I get a bad first round pick), but there’s something that can be said in a positive outlook for leagues that use the traditional serpentine draft. If there was an auction, I can tell that trades prior to the auction would not exist. Who trades money? Nobody. Now, if you’re in a league with trade-happy owners, opening up the trading window several weeks before the draft is slated to start gives all owners lots of time to make some deals. Trades encourage more trades, and as many Dynasty owners know, a trade-happy league is usually the sign of a good league. The truth is that there’s only three ways to get players on your team – trades, the draft and free agency – so fostering a trade-friendly environment is a good thing. I’m glad to see so many deals going down in this league already. The downside (aside from a poor first round spot to start) is that you have to be really active early and stay on top of deals to be successful. That’s all part of the fun (and another reason why I only have one new league this year).

Enough rambling. What I am prepared to do in a series of articles is to both provide a link to the draft as we go through it and also to give you some insight as to what I am thinking as we progress through the draft. There’s much to discuss so let’s get into the first 6-7 rounds and some pre-draft trading that has been going on since we began the league. As the draft continues to unfold I’ll add more insights, thoughts and comments as we go. Comments at the end of this are always welcome – and for ease of reading along I’ll just have a forum thread for the dialogue.

Let’s go over the starting lineup and the rule quirks / differences from a standard league:

Starters – 1 QB, 1-2 RB, 3 WR, 1-2 TE, PK on offense; 1-2 DT, 2 DE, 3-4 LB, 2 CB, 2 S on defense. So you’re basically running a 4-3 or a 3-4 on defense (most like 4 LBs) and either 2 RB or 2 TE on offense.

Scoring – there’s rewards for “big plays” (40+ yard passing TDs, 30+ yard rushing TDs), and the PPR scoring favors TEs (0.5 for RB, 1.0 for WR, 1.5 for TE). IDPs get good scoring too (1.5 for a tackle, 0.75 for an assist) so the IDP scores can rack up for strong performances. More details to the scoring are here.

Now for the deals that I have made so far – six trades already, and I’m sure that there will be more to come. First I made three deals before the draft:

1. Jeff Pasquino gives 6.04, 11.13, 18.04

Woodshop Bachman gives 7.06, 8.11, 14.11

I saw many people moving up and down in Rounds 1-4, so I wanted to find another approach to get some good value. By moving down in the sixth round I gained two picks in the first 10 rounds where I thought that a good deal of the value was in the draft. Two moves upwards is worth sliding down 18 picks (from 6.04 to 7.06) to me.

2. Jeff Pasquino gives 4.04, 5.13, 9.13

Mike Lightbrown gives 4.14, 5.01, 9.01

Similar to the first deal, I felt moving down 10 in the fourth gives me more value in the fifth with Pick 65 overall for my fifth player along with a 12 spot move forward in Round 9.

3. Jeff Pasquino gives 1.13, 7.13, 47.13, 48.04, 49.13, 50.04, 51.13, 52.04, 53.03

Mike Lightbrown gives 4.13, 4.16, 13.01, 14.07, 15.01, 17.01, 19.01, 21.01, 23.01

Yes, you’re reading that one correctly. This is basically a first round pick along with a seventh round selection for two fourths, but the key is the back end of the deal with seven picks moving up about 30 rounds. In a league where you start 19 players, this is extremely significant. I can’t take credit for this one as I basically piggy-backed another owner who did the same thing (also with Mike Lightbrown), but there’s no way I could pass this up despite losing my top pick.

So at the end of all of this shuffling I no longer had a first round pick but did have 2.04 and several picks in the third and fourth rounds. Having been saddled with a lower first round pick to start I decided to abandon the concept of getting a Top 10 player and decided to focus on clustering as many picks in the Top 100-150 selections as possible. I wanted to get my starters before most everyone else so that my depth would be my team’s strength (and hopefully provide injury insurances as well).

Kickoff

The draft started and I was patiently awaiting my turn, holding my breath for my first pick at 2.04. I was targeting DeSean Jackson there and he was heading right for me and then – I made my first mistake. I was getting good word that people didn’t want him as much as I did, so I thought I could take a free slip downward in the draft to 2.07 and still get my guy in a move most would call “free value”. Only this time it backfired. Not only that but the trade I got was minimal (I picked up 9.10 for 10.04 in the move). Reggie Wayne was my first pick of the Hot Route draft, and I had my first feeling of both buyer’s remorse and also “what have I done” syndrome. Not a good feeling, let me tell you.

So, please – learn from that mistake. If your guy is there early, don’t get cute. Take him, be happy, and move on. I still like Wayne right now on my team, but it took a couple of hours to rebound from that miscue.

Moving on I grabbed Tom Brady at the end of the third (you need a strong QB in 16-team Dynasty leagues, without question) and then I started loading up on players with four picks in a string of later fourths and the first pick of Round 5. I had three wideouts and three running backs all ready to be selected, so after checking on who I could live with and live without and also taking a quick peek at the roster of the team between my first and second pair of picks I took Kenny Britt and LeSean McCoy. I had Jeremy Maclin and Santonio Holmes grouped here, so I was hoping Holmes would not go at the next pick as I really didn’t want two Eagles that early (also a side note – not having DeSean Jackson afforded me some team diversity here). I also had Felix Jones and Jahvid Best targeted in the next pairing. Best and Holmes were my picks as I wanted clear starters with few challengers at the position (Tashard Choice and Marion Barber would be pricy handcuffs for Jones, for example). So now after five picks my team stood as:

QB: Tom Brady

RB: Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy

WR: Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes

So now I have a starting quarterback, backfield and three wideouts – all key components on offense. I believe that I was the first team to collect six players, and while I have a hole at tight end right now, you have to have some sort of lacking position this early.

That took me up until the end of April and the conclusion of Round 5. I’ll start attacking more wheeling and dealing in the next installment, most likely after Round 10 or so.

Strategy Discussion

Picking up where we left off, I realized that I should spend a little more time now up front to give more strategy outlook on what I am trying to do with this draft – and more importantly, how it applies in general to any league.

In Part 1 I focused on the pre-draft activity and Rounds 1-5 selections, but I did not go far enough in depth on why I was making all of those moves. In the early part of any draft, the primary goal is to get as much value as possible. That means getting as many guys off of my Top 100 list as possible, preferably as high on that list as I can. By moving down from higher picks I was able to collect six draft spots in the Top 65 overall, affording me what would appear to be an extra pick and get a leg up on the competition from a value standpoint.

Now that we are moving into the next five rounds, the strategy starts to shift – but just a little. The Top 100 player list is still in play, but now you have to also start looking at positional importance. What I mean by this is that both the scoring system for each position matters as well as the number of starters league-wide that are required for each position. In the case of this particular league, three wide receivers are needed for every team as well as 3-4 linebackers. Also with 16 teams in the league, there are only so many starting NFL quarterbacks so getting a solid backup QB is of good importance.

The human element comes up in every draft as well. No matter how many picks a team owner has made to a given point, whenever a lull shows up within a draft there is a want to “get back in the game” and trade up to get another draft pick. That feeling happens all of the time and is perfectly natural. Despite all of the logical preparation of setting up draft picks in particular areas of value within the draft (such as getting multiple picks queued up in a later round) there is a natural want to trade up and get at least one of the players going off of the board to everyone else’s teams. This is where self-discipline has to enter into the game. Do not be overanxious and trade up for the sake of trading up – else you will overpay for that privilege. Stay focused on your overall goal to get the best team possible and trust that your picks coming up will be worth the wait.

Let’s go over the starting lineup quickly once again and the rule quirks / differences from a standard league:

Now here was the team through Round 5:

QB: Tom Brady

RB: Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy

WR: Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes

and the selections made in Rounds 6-10:

7.06 Barrett Ruud, TB LB

7.07 James Laurinaitis, STL LB

7.13 Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN TE

8.11 Jared Cook, TEN TE

9.13 Reggie Bush, NO RB

10.06 Matt Cassel, KC QB

10.14 Julian Edelman, NE WR

That’s 12 picks overall through 10 rounds with 10 out of 12 on offense. Linebackers, as mentioned in the strategy section, score well and are a position of need. Grabbing two tight ends and a backup QB were also a priority, and then closing this area of the draft with a fourth WR helped the team with both depth at that position and also to bridge the gap of Santonio Holmes’ four-game suspension. (I also feel that Wes Welker will not be 100% when he does return until at least 2011, so this is still a good long term pick in my opinion).

Now for the deals that I have made since Round 5 – four in all, some big, some small –and I’m sure that there will be more to come:

1. Jeff Pasquino gives 8.04, 9.01, 3rd round rookie in 2011

Woodshop Bachman gives 7.07, 10.06

Moving up in Round 7 did not cost me too much here since I tend to de-value rookie draft picks. I know my strengths (veterans, player evaluation, watching NFL games, trading) versus my weaknesses (not enough time to see all the collegians), plus all rookie draft picks are 50/50 prospects at best beyond the first round anyway. I like the value so I’m happy to be able to get a second stud LB on the club.

2. Jeff Pasquino gives 1st round rookie in 2011

Jene Bramel gives 7.13

Not nearly as good a value as some others had done prior to this draft (some owners had moved their 2011 1st for a sixth rounder), but I still had a need on the roster (TE) and also felt that the team was looking pretty good so far and that my rookie picks next year would be towards the later part of the rounds (that’s the hope at least, right?). Taking the rose-colored glasses off, 10 rookies had been picked in this draft in the Top 110 selections – which is right about on par with the “one rookie per round” rule (using 12 teams). By that rule of thumb, the first rookie pick is worth about Pick 12, the next Pick 24, and so on – so with that information, 7.13 is worth roughly rookie draft pick 1.11 next year (which is confirmed by 10 rookies already going off of the board in this draft). As long as I feel like my team is Top 6 or better in the league, this is still good value.

3. Jeff Pasquino gives 9.13, 18.07

Sigmund Bloom gives 9.10, 19.01

This deal was just a small move here to pick up a boost later in the draft. The good news was that my targeted player (RB3, Reggie Bush) was still there at 9.13 and I was able to take him with that pick. The moral of this move is that a 2-6 spot move backwards can give you more value later in the draft, so if you are not in love with a particular player when it is your turn then consider moving back a little.

4. Jeff Pasquino gives 12.04, 14.11

Sigmund Bloom gives 10.14, 21.10

This one doesn’t look so hot from a value perspective, but I had a ton of picks coming up and the players in Round 10 were just too attractive to pass up. Over 50 wide receivers had gone off of the board already and I feared that not having a capable WR4 would leave this team with a hole that I would struggle to fill in September. Moving back from Round 14 to Round 21 sounds bad, but when you consider that I already had multiple picks in Rounds 13 and 14 (Pick 14.11 would have been my 18th player) then this is just moving backwards a little on my depth to improve on my starters. It’s a slight gamble for sure but I think this is one of those times where moving up is worth that risk.

Quick Recap – End of Round 10

To wrap up Part 2 of this draft, I now have all my offensive starters plus one reserve at each spot (2 QB, 3 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE) and two IDP studs at linebacker and the next 15 rounds of my draft looks like this:

13.01, 13.13

14.04, 14.07

15.01, 15.13

16.04

17.01, 17.13

18.07

19.13

20.04

21.01, 21.10, 21.13

22.04

23.01, 23.13

24.04

25.13

And the roster is this:

QB: Tom Brady, Matt Cassel

RB: Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy, Reggie Bush

WR: Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes, Julian Edelman

TE: Visanthe Shiancoe, Jared Cook

LB: Barrett Ruud, James Laurinaitis

With good discipline, I should be well situated to either move up and grab someone I really like or, most likely, wait for value to continue to fall and start to build up both depth on offense and also to assemble a solid IDP core. With 20 selections in the next 15 rounds, even if I give up two of these picks to move higher in the order I would still have 31 players after 25 rounds, a solid advantage in these deep drafts.

That wraps up Part 2 of this self-analysis. I hope that this is helping you either in new leagues you are about to join or in other ways regarding your own leagues. Once again, comments and feedback are welcome.

In Part 2 the strategy shifted a bit to not just include the Top 100 player list but also to start looking hard at positional importance. What that means to a league like this (16 teams, IDP, extremely deep with 53 rounds) is quarterback (only 32 starters), wide receivers (48 start every week league-wide) and linebackers (most teams prefer four starters, making it a whopping 64 starters league-wide) are really important to start acquiring even after starting positions have been addressed.

Some counter-strike opportunities also arise, which is very important if you can start to identify which teams are strong and which ones are hurting at given positions. Having the ammunition (and good trade relations) affords you the chance to make important moves that can present themselves at any given time. An example of this occurred in this very draft in Round 12 – read on for the details.

Once again I will go over the activity to date – picks and trades – and some self-analysis of what is going on in the hopes that you can apply it to your team(s).

Let’s go over the starting lineup quickly once again and the rule quirks / differences from a standard league:

Starters – 1 QB, 1-2 RB, 3 WR, 1-2 TE, PK on offense; 1-2 DT, 2 DE, 3-4 LB, 2 CB, 2 S on defense. So you’re basically running a 4-3 or a 3-4 on defense (most like 4 LBs) and either 2 RB or 2 TE on offense.

IDPs get good scoring too (1.5 for a tackle, 0.75 for an assist) so the IDP scores can rack up for strong performances. More details to the scoring are here.

Now here was the team through Round 10:

QB: Tom Brady, Matt Cassel

RB: Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy

WR: Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes, Julian Edelman

TE: Visanthe Shiancoe, Jared Cook

LB: Barrett Ruud, James Laurinaitis

and the selections made in Rounds 11-25:

12.08 Charle Whitehurst, SEA QB

12.15 Robert Mathis, IND DE

13.13 Brandon LaFell, CAR WR

14.04 Dennis Pitta, BAL TE

15.01 Stephen Cooper, SDC LB

16.04 Malcom Floyd, SDC WR

17.01 Will Witherspoon, TEN LB

18.07 Willis McGahee, BAL RB

18.08 Demorrio Williams, KCC LB

19.10 Derrick Johnson, KCC LB

19.13 Dwight Freeney, IND DE

20.04 Bo Scaife, TEN TE

20.06 Devery Henderson, NOS WR

21.01 Troy Polamalu, PIT S

21.04 Brian Hartline, MIA WR

22.03 Anthony Fasano, MIA TE

25.10 Antwan Odom, CIN DE

25.13 Erik Coleman, ATL S

25.14 Troy Williamson, JAC WR

After initially having 12 picks in the first 10 rounds and using 10 of them on offense, IDP starts to hit the table in a bigger way. Prior trades lined up much-needed depth in this critical phase of the draft, giving another 19 players in 15 rounds. That’s 31 picks in 25 rounds, a significant advantage when it comes to build a strong team with depth across multiple positions.

As for the positions addressed, a third quarterback and two more tight ends were added to five additional wide receivers. That may seem excessive at wideout, but based a similar league it is rather common for teams to average 10-11 WRs on the roster at any given time. That means 160-180 NFL wide receivers are on a roster somewhere, which tells me that racking up as many solid WRs as quickly as possible is both very important from a depth and lineup perspective but also will give me plenty of trade bait for addressing other needs.

On defense, defensive ends that are top notch are few and far between in the NFL these days. Some teams have switched to a 3-4 look, rendering defensive ends in that scheme as less of a pass rusher and hurting their fantasy stats. Getting a capable 4-3 DE that can get close to double-digit sacks is a nice advantage – and having two would be significant. Three defensive end picks in Rounds 12-25 gives this team an advantage (although a bye week issue when the Colts are off in Week 7).

Bye Weeks

There’s another strategy key point – do not let bye weeks affect your decisions. Draft talent alone and let bye week issues happen. After all, this isn’t a redraft team – you’re supposed to be looking not just at this year but also years to come. There’s little doubt that bye week issues will happen – but deal with those on the weeks that you need to deal with them. Take the best player available and do not let their week off change your mind.

Trade Talks

Now for the deals that I have made since Round 10 – six in all, some big, some small –and I’m sure that there will be a few stragglers in the waning rounds to come:

1. Jeff Pasquino gives 13.01, 15.03

Aaron Rudnicki gives 12.08, 18.08

Earlier I mentioned a counter-strike opportunity, and this was it. I noticed that several teams had just one starting quarterback on their teams so far, and the options were rapidly dwindling. Once I saw three of those teams about to make their picks I decided to pay a little extra and get up in front of them and take my third quarterback, even though I may not have needed one just yet. Taking Charlie Whitehurst at 12.08 left just an aging Matt Hasselbeck and table scraps in Cleveland to choose from for several QB starved teams, and that was nearly worth the move for that alone. The added bonus is that Whitehurst should be the quarterback of the future for Seattle, which should increase my trading options if he does take over for the Seahawks.

2. Jeff Pasquino Pasquino gives 14.07, 17.13

Mike Lightbrown gives 12.15, 37.01

This looks like a bad trade looking back at it (getting less than two rounds for a 20 round drop? Yikes) and I really can’t say much about that. It felt like a good deal at the time, but odds are it was an emotional play for my second defensive end with no “run” on the position going on at all. I was probably rather anxious at this point and overpaid. It happens.

3. Jeff Pasquino gives 2nd round rookie in 2011

Mike Lightbrown gives 19.10

Now this deal I liked – for numerous reasons. Earlier I flipped a first round pick for a late seventh round pick, so getting a 19th for a second feels like good value (and that’s considering I think the team is looking like it should have later picks in the rookie rounds next season). Getting the 298th overall pick implies that the value is rookie pick 25-29 using the 10-12 picks per rookie draft spot rule (12th pick in a startup draft = 1.01, 24th = 1.02, and so on) so that feels like appropriate or even good value. The one downside in valuation is that many rookies had been taken already (about 40), so if you use that as a gauge then the 2nd rounder was getting mid-third round value. Even so, I didn’t mind as I saw a player of need for the team and felt that his ability was more proven than that of a typical 24th-32nd rookie pick in a given year. So I took this deal, selected Derrick Johnson to pair up with Demorrio Williams.

4. Jeff Pasquino gives 21.10, 21.13 1

Mike Lightbrown gives 20.06, 25.10

At this point I start to realize that I have too many draft picks, so I’m going to start moving up every 1-2 rounds as much as I can to try and “burn” those two draft picks’ values. Not many people are looking to do 2-for-1 deals at this late stage of the game, so I decide to move up at the expense of a second slide backwards and keep doing so until the back picks are virtually worthless – as they are to me as I have 55 picks in a draft where only 53 can be used. (That worked for a while, but I’ll mention that a bit more in the fourth and final part of this series).

5. Jeff Pasquino gives 22.04, 24.04 1

Woodshop Bachman gives 21.04, 28.11

Another “one up, one further down” deal that’s typical for moving forward to take a player – and in this case that was exactly the goal. I’m a fan of Brian Hartline and his long term prospects, so when he was still there in Round 21 I had to go get him. The price was more than fair to me.

6. Jeff Pasquino gives 23.01, 23.13

Brian Smith gives 22.03, 25.14

A similar move to the last deal (although by the looks of it, cheaper), and again this is for a targeted player – and another Miami Dolphin. With tight ends at a premium in this league (1.5 PPR, can start 2 TE each week instead of 2 RBs), I wanted to grab the last viable starter in my mind (sorry St. Louis) and get Anthony Fasano. Again, this was a very fair deal, I had the value to give and I get the player I wanted.

Quick Recap – End of Round 25

To wrap up Part 3 of this draft, I now have significant depth behind all of my offensive starters (3 QB, 4 RB, 9 WR, 5 TE) and 11 IDP players addressing the three key positions – 3 DEs, 6 LBs, and two safeties. The roster is now:

QB (3): Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Charlie Whitehurst

RB (4): Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy, Reggie Bush, Willis McGahee

WR (9): Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes, Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Malcom Floyd, Devery Henderson, Brian Hartline, Troy Williamson

TE (5): Visanthe Shiancoe, Jared Cook, Dennis Pitta, Bo Scaife, Anthony Fasano

DE (3): Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, Antwan Odom

LB (6): Barrett Ruud, James Laurinaitis, Stephen Cooper, Will Weatherspoon, Demorrio Williams, Derrick Johnson

S (2): Troy Polamalu, Erik Coleman

The team also has more structure as the Titan tight end situation (Cook and Scaife) and the Chiefs’ best two linebackers (Derrick Johnson, Demorrio Williams) are both locked up. The hope is one of the two emerges and is a viable starter and then the other is either just a handcuff or can be released when more roster room is required.

More than half of the roster is complete (32 players taken, 23 picks remain – with 21 usable) and the last picks will be in Round 46, seven rounds ahead of most other teams. Rounding out the starters and finishing up the depth will be the goal of the final phases of this draft, with the hopes of also trading the two extra picks for something of value.

That wraps up Part 3 of this self-analysis. I hope that this is helping you either in new leagues you are about to join or in other ways regarding your own leagues. Once again, comments and feedback are welcome. Check back for Part 4 after the final picks are in so we can give this squad a final grade!

Part 3 continued with bulking up some of the lineup as we finally started to add a few more IDP players, but the value remained on the offensive side of the ball. A couple of deals materialized, but nothing too earth-shattering. The key here was to maximize value with the extra picks I had accumulated from previous deals as I had 4-5 extra picks above the normal number for 15 rounds. Building depth in a league that is ultra-deep is critical, so that was the focus in Rounds 11-25.

Now we are in the final stages of the draft (even though technically we have barely even arrived at the midpoint). The focus now is to get the best players available and address a few key needs. Again, through previous deals, I am going to be the first team to finish my draft (the last pick I have will be in Round 44), a nice advantage as over 150 players will still be selected after I am done. What I have to do is take the best players that will be selected and not leave them as value picks for other teams, even if it is a player I may not really need due to depth elsewhere. “Best players available,” I keep reminding myself.

Once again I will go over the activity to date – picks and trades – and some self-analysis of what is going on in the hopes that you can apply it to your team(s).

Once again I will go over the activity to date – picks and trades – and some self-analysis of what is going on in the hopes that you can apply it to your team(s).

Now here was the team through Round 25:

DE (3): Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, Antwan Odom

LB (6): Barrett Ruud, James Laurinaitis, Stephen Cooper, Will Weatherspoon, Demorrio Williams, Derrick Johnson

S (2): Troy Polamalu, Erik Coleman

Note the need at PK, DT and CB to finish up a starting lineup. Even though I have had ample time to address these positions, the value of getting DT or CB early is minimal at best over what can be found most weeks on the waiver wire. As a result I “sluffed” the positions accordingly and let them fall to my final selections. Kicker was another story, as I felt that having two Top 10 PKs gave me a solid advantage over a few teams that would struggle to find two good viable kickers. Plus I had the advantage of getting my kickers sooner than most team, another nice advantage of ending my draft first.

So here are the final draft picks I made, including one extra:

26.04 Sergio Kindle, BAL LB

27.13 Deangelo Hall, WAS CB

28.04 Leonard Weaver, PHI RB

28.11 Chris Hope, TEN S

29.13 John Skelton, AZ QB

30.04 Koa Misi, MIA LB

31.13 David Akers, PHI PK

32.04 Richard Seymour, OAK DE

33.11 Andre Brown, NYG RB

33.13 Greg Camarillo, MIA WR

34.16 Cameron Wake, MIA LB

36.04 Jonathan Crompton, SDC QB

37.01 Jalen Parmele, BAL RB

38.04 Jay Feely, AZ PK

39.01 Tommie Harris, CHI DT

39.13 Kris Jenkins, NYJ DT

40.04 Roy Hall, NOS WR

41.13 Dunta Robinson, ATL CB

42.04 Lavelle Hawkins, TEN WR

43.13 Aaron Brown, DET RB

44.04 Freddie Barnes, CHI WR**

44.11 Glover Quin, HOU CB

**Traded prior to pick 44.11

During this portion of the draft I had the following thoughts whenever I was looking at a player:

- Do I have a need at this position?

- Is this guy the best available player overall?

- Does he give me some sort of backup plan in case of an injury to a starter?

- Is he a rookie who might work well on my taxi squad?

- Is this player the last guy on my “short list” for this position?

- Will I be upset if I don’t get this guy at all? (Follow up – is he worth trading up to get?)

Asking these sorts of questions gives you the ability to reflect on each pick as things go along and the draft unfolds. It also allowed me to draft positions where I felt that value was running out and grab the last guy who might still be there before I get to go again.

The rookie question is an interesting one, as the rules of this league allow for three rookies to be “stashed” for a year on a taxi squad. When I came into Round 25 I had just Jahvid Best and Brandon LaFell for rookies and I was not planning on giving them a redshirt season, so I wanted to get at least three more rookies in the final 20 or so rounds. Here was my final rookie list:

QB (2): John Skelton, Jonathan Crompton

RB (1): Jahvid Best

WR (2): Brandon LaFell, Freddie Barnes

TE (1): Dennis Pitta

LB (2): Sergio Kindle, Koa Misi

Despite trading Barnes away I still have two quarterbacks, a tight end and two linebackers to go onto the taxi squad. Another word of strategy advice – wait until the very last minute to make those kinds of moves. The last thing I want to do is to “burn” a spot when someone could get injured and wind up on my injured reserve instead. Every roster spot counts.

Trade Talks

Now for the deals that I have made since Round 25 – only three small moves, as you might expect this late in a draft – but they all had some meaning behind them:

1. Jeff Pasquino gives 34.04, 45.13 and 46.04

Jene Bramel gives: 33.11

Well, something had to give here. I kept trying to move up ever since I had accumulated 55 draft picks – two more than permitted – and was hoping to push the last two picks way down into the final round or two to maximize that extra value. Unfortunately once we got past Round 25 or so there was not much incentive for many owners to make deals. I took this one as the best available to get a little extra something for two picks I could not use anyway.

2. Jeff Pasquino gives 35.13, 37.13

Mike Lightbrown gives 34.16, 39.01

I made this move because I had one guy left on my list of linebackers that I really wanted – Cameron Wake from Miami. Given that I had that one guy on my list and wanted to make sure I got him, I was happy to pay the price of moving down about 20 spots or so to get up and grab him before he was gone.

3. Jeff Pasquino gives Freddie Barnes

Jake Bachman gives 44.11 and a 5th round rookie in 2011

This was actually a pretty good story. I mentioned I was done first in Round 44 and was going back and forth with my last two picks, trying to get the best players available. I had pre-drafted both picks and planned on offense with my 52nd player and CB3 with my final pick, yet my pre-drafts got swapped and Freddie Barnes remained my top choice in Round 44 despite my selection of Aaron Brown in Round 43. That left me with 13 WRs and just two corners – far from a devastating result – but I was a little bummed that I made that error. As it turned out, another owner coveted Freddie Barnes and wanted him as well – so I traded Barnes to him, got another draft pick and a 2011 5th round draft pick so I could go back and get my third cornerback. So the “error” actually gave me a nice value in a late rookie pick next year and the corner I wanted.

Quick Recap – End of the Draft

To wrap up Part 4 and the end of this draft, I now have significant depth behind all of my offensive starters (5 QB, 8 RB, 12 WR, 5 TE, 2PK) and 21 IDP players addressing the three key positions with good depth – 4 DEs, 9 LBs, and three safeties. The roster is now:

QB (5): Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Charlie Whitehurst, John Skelton, Jonathan Crompton

RB (8): Jahvid Best, LeSean McCoy, Reggie Bush, Willis McGahee, Leonard Weaver, Andre Brown, Jalen Parmele, Aaron Brown

WR (12): Reggie Wayne, Kenny Britt, Santonio Holmes, Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Malcom Floyd, Devery Henderson, Brian Hartline, Troy Williamson, Greg Camarillo, Roy Hall, Lavelle Hawkins

TE (5): Visanthe Shiancoe, Jared Cook, Dennis Pitta, Bo Scaife, Anthony Fasano PK (2): David Akers, Jay Feely

DE (4): Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, Antwan Odom, Richard Seymour

DT (2): Tommie Harris, Kris Jenkins

LB (9): Barrett Ruud, James Laurinaitis, Stephen Cooper, Will Weatherspoon, Demorrio Williams, Derrick Johnson, Sergio Kindle, Koa Misi, Cameron Wake

S (3): Troy Polamalu, Erik Coleman, Chris Hope

CB (3): Deangelo Hall, Dunta Robinson, Glover Quin

Several comments are owed on this final roster:

QB – I took the best five QBs I had available to me at the time. I would have liked to get a backup to Tom Brady but Brian Hoyer went a little earlier than I expected. That’s fine and I went with the punches, taking two young rookie QBs with good upside. I still like that I got a Top 5-8 quarterback, a decent QB2 starter and a likely starters in Seattle in 2011, if not sooner.

RB – If you had told me that I would grab eight running backs in this draft I would not have believed you, but this was really about best players available. I like the running attack in Baltimore so corralling RB2 and RB3 in that lineup (McGahee, Parmele) gives me nice long term value behind Ray Rice. Speaking of backups, Leonard Weaver is good LeSean McCoy insurance and Aaron Brown may help if Best gets hurt in Detroit.

Funny quick story about the Aaron Brown pick – he really was nowhere close to my radar when I took him, as I was debating those that two picks to find the best players available. In a different draft I was also finishing up (a Survivor League at FootballGuys) someone took Aaron Brown which shocked me. It seemed crazy, but his explanation of the pick was plausible and with Brown in a Top 50-60 spot in that draft over there, the value and the team need I could potentially have here in this league lined up well. So I snagged Brown and said “OK” and moved on. Who knows that late – it could be a great pick or a steal or a swing and a miss. I’ll take that shot extremely late in a draft with no second thoughts.

WR – Clearly a large group of WRs was a team goal here, although I still am on the fence about Wayne vs. DeSean. The team hope here has to be that Wayne is a strong WR1 for 3-4 years and that 2-3 other WRs emerge to build up a solid starting group. Getting a few handcuff situations seemed like a good idea late (Camarillo for Hartline, Lavelle Hawkins for Kenny Britt) and even a huge flyer on Roy Hall (good prospect that was stuck in Indianapolis but is now a Saint) seemed worth it. I have plenty of solid WRs that see NFL playing time right now, but none can be considered a stud aside from Wayne. I need a couple to pick it up a notch or two to make this team dominant.

TE – Another position of concern here, as I need Shiancoe to play well and be startable until Jared Cook takes over in Tennessee. Getting Bo Scaife anchored the Titans starter spot, and Anthony Fasano was my last viable NFL TE starter on my board when I grabbed him. My best long term prospect though is Dennis Pitta, who I think will be a great TE for the Ravens for years to come once they finally let Heap ride off into the sunset – most likely from a cart off of the field with another injury.

PK – Two strong starters on high-powered offenses. David Akers and Jay Feely (a nice sleeper PK in 2010) look good here.

DE – A position I tried to build as a team strength here and even though I have two teammates (Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis) ideally this will only matter once a season. Getting two backups was still a priority and I feel I did pretty well with Antwan Odom an Richard Seymour.

DT – Tommie Harris should put up better numbers now that Julius Peppers will get more attention at defensive end. Kris Jenkins was a top notch DT until he was injured last year. If both of these guys falter, however – the waiver wire awaits with DTs.

LB – A position that has to be strong in these deep IDP leagues. Getting Barrett Ruud and James Laurinaitis give me a very strong 1-2 punch for the next several seasons. I will have some questions as to which LBs will comprise my LB3/LB4 most weeks, but odds are that one of the two Kansas City LBs will step up (Derrick Johnson or Demorrio Williams) for one of those roles. Stephen Cooper or Will Weatherspoon should be a solid fourth most weeks. The others are upside hopefuls like Cameron Wake and two rookies (Sergio Kindle, Koa Misi) that may wind up on my taxi squad.

S – The goal was some solid strength here but not too deep as I needed roster spots elsewhere. Troy Polamalu is a top safety (when healthy) and both Erik Coleman and Chris Hope are solid but unspectacular IDP performers.

CB – I wanted to grab one Top 10-15 corner and then let the position wait until the very end, and that’s why I snagged Deangelo Hall early (Round 27). With all of the passing games in the NFC East (Dallas, Philadelphia, the Giants), Hall will get plenty of chances for tackles and interceptions most weeks. Dunta Robinson is a strong player who should put up nice numbers in Atlanta. Glover Quin is a sleeper corner that often gets overlooked but he will be a starter for the Texans this year after a strong 2009 season. Again, if I am completely wrong on all of this – corners can be readily found on the waiver wire.

So that’s the team and the draft. I feel that this squad should be competitive, but it is a good crop of owners and some solid teams out there. Time will tell.

That wraps up Part 4, the final part of this self-analysis. I hope that this has helped you either in new leagues you are about to join or in other ways regarding your own leagues. Once again, comments and feedback are welcome.

Well, looking like the staffers will get shut out in year one and not have a participant in the finals of the staffers vs posters league.

It will be Bachman(clown dogs) vs lightbRown(fruity pebbles)

Who won this league ? So much was put on this board about it and then it died off quickly once the season started.
