How bad is Portis hurt? (1 Viewer)

I am no expert on the issue, but isn't there a short test that doctors use to diagnose ligament damage before the MRI?
He got tackled from the side and his leg was kind of twisted at a bad angle, similar to the oft-watched Michael Vick injury but not nearly as bad.The only thing I've seen for testing an MCL, LCL or PCL injury on the quick is a simple inflamation (puffiness) or obvious pain when turning the lower leg. It's just a guess by the doctors because the MCL/LCL/PCL works very differently from the ACL.Knee braces can certainly help (not overcome) simple sprains of the MCL/LCL/PCL but you have to learn to use your thigh (upper leg) muscles differently with an ACL injury. Otherwise, you'll turn your knee inside out and fall over like a stork (a' la McGahee injury).BTW, I put the Olandis Gary "kept playing with a torn ACL" story in the same category as the "JFK was killed by a single bullet" theory - I can't believe somebody can learn how to run differently in a matter of minutes by not being able to rely on the knee (ACL) - I could envision that Gary went out iwith a sprained knee and kept playing and tore it later.

When I tore my ACL playing basketball... I walked & drove myself home. Just thought it was a bad knee twist. 3 doctors gave me the "quick" test (including one high priced specialist) & all assured me my ACL was fine. 4 months later & my knee still not quite the same, they finally decided I needed an MRI... which suprise, suprise revealed a torn ACL.We know nothing at all at this point... & skeletor will make sure we know even less... "might be his knee or ankle"... whatever, you know what freaking joint is the problem Shanny, don't insult us.Just wait for the MRI & hope they actually disclose the results.

The game was on television- it was a night game- and watched by millions. I was one of them. It happened whether you believe it or not. It is worth noting that Gary was basically a straight ahead runner. There is also a good possibility that Gary has significantly more muscle in his quad and around his knee which would help stabilize it than you. You experience is just one of thousands. Not eveeryone that blows out their ACL experiences major buckling when using the knee.

Shanahan is about to call me so I will let you know when I get off the phone with him. We always chat right after games.
If he is hurt very badly it is all on that jerk off Shanahans shoulders that for sure. Why is he running him five times in a row inside the 20 when he has Elam who can hit them from anywhere inside the 50 routinely? If I were the owner I would be demanding answers for why he did what he did to the kid today! One of the worst over coaching mistakes I have ever seen!.

Well I THINK I made the Super Bowl WITH what Portis (and Holmes and Favre not McNair, thewwww) did for me today but I can't afford to play in the Super Bowl with either Mike Bennett or Amos Zereoue or Chris Brown as my other Back.

I was at the game. Wasn't nearly as bad as it looked. He walked off under his own power. Sprained ankle and sprained knee with a negative on a tear. MRI tomorrow.
He didnt walk off any field on hos own power, what game where you at?

I'm sorry, but posting only minutes after the conclusion of the game (some what, 15 minutes after Elam finished off the Browns?) you deserve a reply like this...

Portis is one of the toughest players in the league. he had a cracked sternum, and if you ever had one you would understand that it's tough just trying to sleep on it nevermind geting hit by 300 dudes who are trying to break you in two. Wake up before you talk idiot.
EEEEE-Z, Donny... RSFF is down the hall to your right.

I hear you Dave but i was watching this thing go down and saying imagine if this over coaching fool gets one of his players hurt here for NO REASON what so ever. Then low and behold down goes the best player on the field. Honestly if i were the owner I fine or fire that jerk on the spot. Dam it, he would have to be held accountable for such a brain dead mistake.

As I was watching it, I expected them to kick about three plays before they actually did.

if we on this board know the kick had to come sooner then how the hell can Shanahan get away with this unscaved? he has to be hold accountable. Someone has to get in his face and demand an answer to why he did not kick on the ten, but had to run another play to the ten with one of the all time best PK standing right next to him? WHY? WHY? WHY!!!!!!!!!

Shhhhhhhhhhh Donny.... You have been going nuts on this post. Calling people idiots, USING ALL CAPS, and excessive use of !!!!!!!!! is not impressing anyone. I read what you had to say the first time, no need to keep repeating yourself. Breath a little.

from the Denver Post:"A Broncos official with knowledge of the injury said he expected Portis to miss one game, Sunday night's showdown in Indianapolis against the Colts."

BTW, just saw the ESPN "highlight" of Portis' injury. He had a big guy under each arm helping him off the field - THAT is what I'd expect to happen. His tackle didn't look like an ACL-type injury to me - looked more like either MCL strain or high ankle sprain.
Just curious-How could you make a judgement on that tackle. The view of his leg was blocked. I am no expert on the issue, but isn't there a short test that doctors use to diagnose ligament damage before the MRI?
Yes, there is a test the doctor's do that can give them a good idea if there is a tear or not. IT is called a laxity test (SP?) and basically the doctor will attempt to manipulate the joint while imobilizing the thigh, to see if there is any movement that shouldn't be there.I've torn my ACL twice, and both times the doc told me it was torn by the "laxity" of my knee. HOWEVER, this only gives an idea of what happens, it can't diagnose anything specific.

From what I could tell, the injury, if at all to the knee would be a hyperextension, which at first is quite painfull, but usually does no damage requiring surgery. As for the ankle, your guess is as good as mine. There was really no clear view of what happened.I am keeping my fingers crossed with Anderson and Griffin on the bench.
