Bubble it up now and go right to a 30 team playoff.  One team gets a bye first round.  All rounds are best of 7.

Only way to salvage the season.

I just came up with this and it is brilliant.  How do we get this to go viral?  Should I tweet it?
The ONLY reason I care about baseball is because of fantasy and you want to take that away from me?

/signed  Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Players are definitely screwing up but extra innings rule made up on the fly, no plan for made up games and the late addition to the playoffs just screams clown show. The Rays, a team not involved with covid at all (so far) just had their schedule adjusted this week to accommodate somebody else. It’s insane.
How in the world are you blaming the princiPAL cause the kids are morons?  I don't get it.  The "player starts on 2nd base in the 10th inning" isn't forcing them to risk their livelihoods for a year.

What was the point of even trying to have a season if they’re just going to shut entire teams and their opponents down for a week+ if there are a handful of guys testing positive? That was always going to happen.

Yeah exactly, i never thought that was supposed to be in the cards

My guess is they are struggling with the fact that some players will test positive at different times than others. Just taking the positives off the field and replacing them with others isn't going to help much if other guys on the team are positive and can spread it further before actually registering a positive test.

Manfred sounds like an idiot, but what protocols did the union sign off on?  Did they agree not to visit strip clubs en mass (Marlins)?  Did they agree not to go to casinos en mass (Cards)?  He's trying to salvage something the players effed up.  He didn't create this, he's trying to ramrod the results through.  Most times the owners get a pass and the players get vilified in labor disputes.  In this case the players should be getting roasted over the coals.
This was probably the sticking point that caused such a delay in negotiations.

Players: "Fine. We'll agree to everything as long as we get strip clubs."

Owners: "No way. You guys can't be going to strip clubs during a pandemic."

Players: "If that's the case, no season then."

Players stuck to their guns and got strip clubs.

@ScottMillerBbl: #MLB internal investigation found the #Marlins were very lapse in following protocols during Atlanta trip last weekend, players going out, players in hotel bar, etc. Lots of MLB people very unhappy with Miami

@AnthonyDiComo

BREAKING: Yoenis Céspedes did not show up to the ballpark today, nor give the Mets any explanation why. In a statement, the Mets say their attempts to contact him "have been unsuccessful."
Yoenis AWOL? Hope he's alright.

Not making an excuse, but it shouldn't be surprising that a bunch of youngish athletes with money broke "protocols" and went out for entertainment.

The NBA should setup some in bubble entertainment if you know what I mean.  :oldunsure:

Exactly. If one or two players get it you quarantine them, call up a couple of guys, keep testing everyone else, and keep on rolling.

When half a team gets it, not only is that team going to struggle to field a team, but the odds that their guys pass it onto numerous guys on their opposing teams increase tremendously. If one player has it and plays it a game before testing positive, their total interaction time with the other team is probably fairly small other than a position player up to bat next to the catcher. But if 5 guys are all positive, the total time that those guys are in proximity to players from the other team is much greater, so the risk of spreading it to a much larger group is a lot higher.

Thom Brennaman just said during the Reds game that he has Bob Costas scheduled to be on his podcast tomorrow or something and Costas asked him if he wanted to scrap it since there are rumors that they are going to put the league on hold tomorrow.

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

The latest round of coronavirus tests from the St. Louis Cardinals are, in the words of someone with the team, "not good." There are expected to be multiple new positives, sources tell ESPN. Cardinals took more tests this morning, and results of those should arrive by tonight.

This is why they aren’t just calling up one dude and moving on.

Guessing they shut things down. Float a bubble in a few cities with a bunch of doubleheaders. If the players dont bite then no season. NFL has no chance.

gotta figure yoenis is opting out.  well, he kinda opted out 2-3 years ago.
Any other team, and people are calling out the player for no communication. But it's the Mets so it's funny.

@JeffPassan: When Yoenis Cespedes didn't show up today, the Mets sent security to his room. They found it empty. He had taken his belongings, just up and left, and through his agent informed the team mid-game that he was opting out, according to Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen.

Wow

all about his next contract.  he has struck out 50% of his ABs this year.  yo gonna yo and it’s better to not play to preserve value.  he knows the mets don’t want him too.  gives dom smith ABS.

Nuts -

Shohei Ohtani expressed discomfort in is pitching arm after today’s game. The club has sent him for an MRI, no results yet.

Aren't they testing daily with a few hours turnaround on results?  They shouldn't have to shut anything down under those circumstances.

That’s unfathomable with the amount of money baseball has. Dopes.
Part of why I’ve been railing on manfred. Idiotic plan from the start. I think they go to daily testing when they find out a team has it, but that seems like a horse out of the barn scenario.

Average nfl career is 2.5 years. They’re gonna bubble up. They need that money.
Yup.   The average player isn't giving up 40% off his career earnings.

13 total Cardinals players or staff are positive after a casino trip. The good news is so far no Twins (who they last played a 4 game series against) are positive. This is similar to no Phillies players being positive after the Marlins series. Outdoor spread is VERY difficult. Makes me feel better about sports in general but these morons need to stop hitting the town.

The Phillies had three staff members test positive - a coach, a home clubhouse attendant and a visitors clubhouse attendant. But the coach and home clubhouse attendant had “false positive” results on their coronavirus tests

The teams could have their own mobile labs if they wanted to pay for it.
There’s still shortages of reagents and all sorts of lab supplies. Honestly, it’s sort of outrageous that some areas of the country still have testing limitations while pro sports can be running thousands and thousands of tests a week.

Smh. These leagues are so dumb. Part of the agreement to play should have been that anyone that tests positive after going someplace like this would be suspended without pay for the remainder of the season. So stupid.

I think I heard the NFL did put in language that excludes players from going places like that. Not sure what the penalty for not complying is though.

I can’t even imagine how angry other players must be around the league who are doing their best to stay safe, knowing that morons like this who are going to casinos together could tank the entire season for them all.

Just to be clear I did not mean all 13 players went to the casino. Could've been one or two for all we know.

I think they are changing the protocols from "leaving the hotel is highly discouraged" to "not allowed".

They have 60 players to choose from.  They should continue to play with those guys.

13, holy balls

No way MLB finishes this season, and I doubt the NFL can.

NHL and NBA have a shot.

I wish I could bet on this.

He's a really tough SOB if he tried to walk off a torn achilles. I've seen 2 in person and both crumpled like sniper fire.
I have torn my achilles.  It feels like someone hits you in the heel with a bat.  But once it happens it doesn't really hurt anymore.  It just feels odd (at least on a complete tear)   I walked off the basketball court, took a shower (I did it at lunchtime from work), went to my boss to tell him I was going to the doctor.  Drove (tore the left achilles) to the doctor and he didn't even need an MRI.  Had surgery the next day.

The following protocols will take effect Thursday and remain in place for the rest of the season:

Players and staff must wear face coverings over their nose and mouth at all times anywhere inside a ballpark - including the dugout and bullpen - except for players who are on the field.

Home teams are required to provide outdoor, covered spaces for visiting teams.

Players and staff must wear masks at all times while inside hotels except when alone in their rooms.

Traveling parties must be limited to essential personnel.

Players and staff must notify their club compliance officer any time they leave the hotel while on the road.

Players and staff are prohibited from visiting bars, lounges, restaurants, and malls.

Anyone found to be in violation of these new protocols may face significant punishments including a potential ban for the remainder of the season, Diamond notes.

Were these "highly encouraged" before but now are required?

Seems stupid that they are only now realizing that they have to actually enforce some of these or they will go ignored.
