How do you solve the obesity crisis? (1 Viewer)

We need to change our entire society. Change the food produced, change how our communities are laid out. Change everything. Things that were always a built-in part of human existence like natural healthy foods, lots of walking and a community where we are in constant connection have disappeared. Now after work we have to pay extra and squeeze in extra time to have a gym, see a therapist, etc. Everything we need has been commodified.
And that’s exactly how we wanted it. Easy. Everything is so easy. But, people have never been more unhappy.

It woud be revealing to see *all* the food in an average graocery store broken down into individual ingredients and then summed to see what we're truly consuming. Feel like most people walk out the walk out the doors with bags filled with crap and pretty packaging.
Yeah it’s probably pretty gross.

Oh another example of how messed up things are, I just found out there’s an app where you can rent your pool out to your neighbors for $70 an hour. God forbid people got to know their neighbors and let the neighborhood kids just use the pool for free. Everything has to be a side hustle or new source of income now.
When a Big Mac is $7 who can afford to be neighborly? You gotta feed the monkey.

Our quest for convenience has actually made many things quite inconvenient.

That’s actually good. Price people out of unhealthy food. Beans and rice are still very affordable.

There are studies out there breaking down what percentage of carts are filled with garbage: 73 freaking percent

I figured most people who look into eating healthy have heard the guideline about avoiding the middle aisles. Basically, everything that's good for you is around the perimeter of the store, and almost everything in the middle aisles are garbage. Exceptions, obviously. I think I always grab lentils and coffee from middle aisles, but really, it's sort of creepy that you can go down entire aisles in the store, where everything in that aisle is actively bad for you.

People who only live for today can afford a $7 big mac on the regular. That's a different problem in our society.

People who only live for the moment are often times the obese.

And that’s just the sandwich. Get the meal you’re pushing $15. The real kicker is now you can even have someone drive it to your house for an extra $10 spot!

We’re doomed.

Anyone who has seen WALL-E sees the parallels to the path we are going down in the US

I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but kind of interesting we've been talking about this here since 2017 and don't seem to have made much headway.

when i'm at the grocery store and it's really busy but i need to get from the east side to the west side and don't want to fight carts, people and robots checking prices... i walk down the organic/health food aisle. nobody in that mofo (and i'm not stopping to buy anything either :bag: )

How I would solve the obesity problem if I were King (to answer the OP)

1. Improved health education and exercise education
2. More govt warnings for bad foods/drinks
3. No govt funded health insurance/safety nets for healthcare costs related to obesity. ( You want to eat like crap, you pay for it)
4. Obesity can legally be used against those candidates seeking employment or looking to retain employment (hit em where it hurts)
5. Investments in app related technology to understand the ramifications of their health and exercise choices (taxpayers likely net up here)

If you were king then a good thing to do, IMO, is stop subsidizing corn, sugar and several other foods.

While I agree with it (mostly), #3 is a whole can of worms that could end up undoing the ACA. Obesity (and related lifestyle choices) are a pre existing condition - if you open that one up, where does it end? No safety net for lung cancer from smoking? Nothing for heart issues from poor lifestyle even if not “obese”?

I'm fine with no safety related smoking related complications. "heart issues" is too generic, would need to be more specific

So will you on obesity. Where do you draw the line? How can you tell what health issue was specifically due to obesity and what would have happened anyway? When ACA did away with any pre existing condition limits and ratings, it’s not something g that can ever easily be undone.

Good gracious......#4 is really out there.
For me..I agree with #1 obviously.....Education.
#2 Meh...Warnings don't do much really..It can help, but it can also increase food related phobias....And this is bad
Not sure what #3 means.
#4...flat out no
#5 maybe.

And make cocaine legal.

Medical community will agree to a line. Again, this is if I were king for a day...I agree that current legislation would be difficult to reverse.

People can become slobs with no repercussions enabled by govt safety nets. Take those nets away and obesity will decline.

Man..I get the sentiment, but I just can't go that far. I mean if someone I cared about had obesity related medical conditions, I would be pretty broken up if they couldn't get help if they needed it.

I get it, but there really needs to be more of a deterrent...and its more about the long game. Our system enables bad habits IMHO. With no deterrents, will it change?
