How has the Jets offseason been going... (1 Viewer)

Just wondering if the Jets have had a good off-season or not. Any reason to believe they would be much better than last year (not counting the Favre trade)?

Not counting the Favre trade? ??? What kind of drugs you on? Who cares about the rest of the off-season?

It's all about FAVRE baby

I agree... but I am just trying to get a better idea of how good the Jets were expected to be before the trade as I am not very familar with them. I odn't want Favre to be discussed in this thread.

Even without Farve they really updated the O-line. If they can get some chemistry together, they had a good offseason anyway. I think Thomas Jones has to be the #! obvious sleeper (oxymoron on purpose) of the year at this point :goodposting:

They basically had a Dan Snyder offseason. Lots of big name spending.

Here is their transaction log. Big names bolded. I think this makes them a 9-7 team. For FF purposes, based on Favre's history, one of Coles or Cotchery could easily put up WR1 numbers.

06/06/2008 Signed WR Marcus Henry; waived LS Nick Jarvis.

05/27/2008 Signed RB Musa Smith

05/20/2008 Signed CB Jonathan Zenon and CB Kenny Patton.

05/19/2008 Signed LS Nick Jarvis

05/12/2008 Signed PK Mark Myers

05/06/2008 Re-signed CB Hank Poteat

05/04/2008 Signed OG Shawn McMackin; waived C Brett Byford and CB Al Phillips

04/28/2008 Waived TE Joe Kowalewski and FB Stacy Tutt.

04/10/2008 Signed S Kerry Rhodes to a five-year contract extension.

03/24/2008 Signed QB Todd Husak; waived RB Sean Bennett, RB Chad Brinker, RB Ian Smart, OT Isaac Herring, C Matt O'Neal, TE Dallas Neil, WR Tavon Mason, WR Michael Oliva, DE Lance Gibson and LB Vince Alexander; placed C Dennis O'Sullivan on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

03/11/2008 Signed RB Jesse Chatman

03/06/2008 Signed FB Tony Richardson

03/04/2008 Released OT Anthony Clement; signed CB Andre Woolfork.

03/03/2008 Signed OG Alan Faneca, LB Calvin Pace and OL Damien Woody.

This is going to be a very good team.

 Faneca and Richardson lead the way in this FA signing. I happen to think TR was the best of the lot - seeing as he blocked for Holmes, LJ, and AP last year. Sure, those guys had a lot to do with their own success, but there is no doubt they were aided by his blocking.

The NFL salary cap must be a sham. Some teams can sign 4 expensive FAs when they're already loaded with big contracts while others seem perpetually cap-strapped.

Actually, the signing of Kris Jenkins will probably play a greater role than either of those 2. The Jets' 3-4 defense was sorely undermanned with Robertson in the middle the last 2 seasons. Now, with the 350lb Jenkins playing NT, the Jets' d-line will not be blown off the ball 3-4 yards immediately after every snap. I expect their defense to take a major step forward this season.

Don't forget about the signing of Budda Franks. FF owners may like to rip the guy for not being the receiver he once was, but Franks is one of the better blocking TEs in the league. With the Oline pick-ups, Richardson and Franks, the Jets may surprise quite a few folks with their improved running game in '08. Now with Favre to keep the defense honest, I'm liking their running game even more. :bag:
