How I Met Your Mother (1 Viewer)

Ted could be dying. He looked old and haggard that episode. Talking about being at a daughters wedding could have made him think of his own daughter and start crying. 2024 he finds out he's dying and makes it another 6 years. Starts telling his kids the story of how he met the mother and the show ends at his funeral.

Any way this show ends it's got strong potential to be the saddest finale in history. After last night I can't see it ending any other way than on a sad note.
They've showed flash forwards where Ted was older than he appeared last night, haven't they?

Saw one theory over on EW that the wife does have some life threatening disease, and that Ted is telling the kids the story while they await word from the Doctor on whether or not the surgery was a success.
I'd put money on that. I'd also put money on that surgery being a success.

It feels odd to think the show would "go there" in the end, and I still don't see it happening. This way, they get to pull out 2 emotional extremes heading down the home stretch. Pretty good idea really.

Though, as we've said all season, this would all be more effective if the Mother was a regular all season.

I think the Mother saying she's worried about Ted living in the past pretty much seals that it's her, not him, that's sick.

Interesting theories about the conclusion. I'm here until the end, although my expectations are low.

What would you classify this show as now? It's pretty hard to call it a comedy as there's nothing that makes you laugh out loud on this show. We're all invested, but this season has not operated like a comedy at all (kind of like the way the Office was at the end).

Definitely still a comedy.

It's pretty rare for a comedy not draw fairly heavily on dramatic stuff from time to time. Sunny and Seinfeld are the only really good comedies I can think of that didn't, outside of cartoons. Probably Arrested Development, but I think it definitely toyed with some drama. Probably 30 Rock, but I wasn't an avid watcher, so I couldn't say for sure.

Chuck comes about as close as I could think of to a show that falls right in the middle of comedy and drama. If not for the format, maybe Louie.

While it wasn't the end of the series, how about on M*A*S*H when Henry finally got to go home and the last scene was Radar telling everyone his plane was shot down? That was brutal.
To be fair, MASH was more a Drama-Comedy (a Dramedy?) and had several hard hitting episodes, because it was a war after all.
True it wasn't a straight up comedy. But, that episode with it's feel good for Henry because he's leaving to sadness for Radar that Henry's leaving to the bombshell at the end was my point.

This makes sense. And the kids don't know about the disease as Ted tells them the story, thus their boredom is understandable.

Show ends with Mom's successful surgery. Though this could have been foreshadowed in the Miracles episode.

Nothing is more comforting while your mom undergoes life-determining surgery than to hear from your father about all the sluts he banged before meeting her.

If indeed Ted his telling his kids about their dead mother, then those kids are big jerks for looking so bored the whole time.
Maybe they're bored because Ted has been telling them the same stories for years? For all we know, "The Mother" could have died when they were toddlers.

I've always assumed that what we see and hear is not the same thing the kids are hearing. After all, Ted has no idea what exactly has been said in all of these conversations where he wasn't even present.

Utter failure of a final season. I will be ticked if either one dies, or even if they live but they keep playing up this angle until the end.

I like the theory that Ted is the one who's potentially dying because it adds some reasoning to all of the stories - which were really more like, "kids, I'm going to tell you the entire history of me"... So that starts to make more sense.

I think the reasoning behind that is the show became a hit, and they needed 9 seasons of stories. For some reason, they waited until the end of 8 to bring in Mother, and never made her a regular.

I just watched the exploding meatball sandwich episode where Barney waits 10 years to extract his revenge on Marshall for noticing that Barney had marinara sauce on his tie. If you recall, once the sandwich exploded on Marshall, TED noticed that Barney has sauce on his pajamas.

Could Barney be pulling off a legen--wait-for-it--make Ted think his wife is dying--dary practical joke?

Not sure I've laughed at all this season.

Honestly, what good comedies ended on a high? Seems most if not all since I've been an adult limped a bit at the end.

I thought Cheers final season was pretty good and the finale was one of the best ever IMO....."sorry we're closed!"

I mean, really what do the kids do except slouch in their seat and look bored. They could be using the same shot of them every time for all I know.

:wall: looks like Mommy dies.
That's what I got out if it too.
The kids look bored not distraught. I'm going with not dead.
Kids haven't aged, right? If everything was filmed in the first season, the writers probably had no idea how the show would end.
the kids filmed the final episode in the second season
Might be a little different show if Ted were telling his 27 year old daughter about his sexcapades.

Lindsey is doing well.

I'm sure they filmed several possible outcomes.

I'm kinda wishing for a nuclear bomb to go off last episode now.

Terrible last season that can't end soon enough.I called the pregnancy thing as soon as I saw Lilly with her bag headed into the car.
