How long before dailies spell the end of traditional FF? (1 Viewer)

One would think that the very small matchups and contests shouldn't be too tough. I'm sure some of the fantasy minds that come here (while being smarter than the general public) should be able to turn a profit in the smaller/easier games.

What often happens in these scenarios, is someone gets himself say a $150 online daily bankroll, and grinds out a decent profit in these smaller things, turning it into lets just say a $500 bankroll.

Then they start playing for more than their bankrolls can rightfully stand, then he enters a few of the $100 type events, loses out and is busted before he knows it.

Thats a bankroll issue, and is a separate topic altogether.

I'd be interested in someones results, if they can "prove" they are turning a fairly sizable profit every week.... like one of the posters mentioned above.

I haven't given much thought to playing in any of these things, but I might a bit later in the season.

My results are below. I've done pretty much exactly what you described, sticking to the low limit games where the money is easy. Last year was my first year and I spent much of the season working on a system - not just how to optimize lineups and whatnot, but also working out basic logistics like how to manage entering a bunch of different contests with a job and kids and yardwork, etc. Originally I was thinking I would slowly try to ramp up to higher volume and/or higher buy-ins but if I'm being honest with myself I really don't have the time or the interest to put in the additional effort. So instead I've focused this year on optimizing what I'm doing at the lower limits and just cranking out a small but steady profit over the course of the season. Not looking to quit my job, just hoping to pay for Christmas gifts again this year, that kind of thing.

Week Entered Winnings ROI3 $117 $153.76 31.4%4 $164 $283.60 72.9%5 $269 $349.76 30.0%6 $352 $343.48 -2.4%7 $342 $568.38 66.2%8 $352 $201.28 -42.8%9 $353 $446.92 26.6%10 $411 $404.34 -1.6%11 $321 $417.84 30.2%12 $351 $436.00 24.2%13 $330 $417.40 26.5%I took my foot off the gas after that, played a little bit more in weeks 14-16 but just small amounts to have something to root for, wasn't keeping detailed records at that point. Don't plan on playing any more until the start of the next NFL season.Overall I started the year with about $125 in my account and ended with a little under $900. I wanted to hit $1,000 but December was just too busy to put much effort into it. Plus it does get to be a bit of a grind after a while, and for the stakes I was playing at it wasn't worth getting burnt out on it. I'm happy with my system and plan to reload next year and see if it scales up. Turning $125 into $900 was nice, it paid for Christmas presents and whatnot. Turning that $900 into $9,000 would be nicer, but we'll see.
Just like last year, slow and steady:

Code:
Week	Entered	Winnings	Net	ROI1	$224.00	$335.00	+ $111.00	49.6%2	$208.00	$315.00	+ $107.00	51.4%3	$377.00	$311.60	- $65.40	-17.3%4	$419.00	$633.80	+ $214.80	51.3%
The worst part is that I entered a bunch of contests early in week 3, and then remembered I was going to the Giants game and would be tailgating all Sunday morning, which is when I'd normally be putting in all my lineups. Don't know if I would've done anything differently anyway, but it bugs me that the only bad week I've had so far is the one when I didn't really get to do my usual research and lineup-setting routine. Add it to my list of lessons learned, and on to week 5.

Thanks a lot Ignoratio Elenchi.............

What this tells me is exactly what I had figured.

There are people here amongst us on this board (some board members here are perhaps smarter than the average fantasy player) who can grind out a profit in these things.

Now you haven't give me the largest sample size (some are never enough in the world of mathematics it seems :) ), but just offhand I'm pretty sure if you follow "your own rules" and not get too far ahead of yourself and continue to grind, you should show a long term profit.

I will most likely send you a PM concerning a few things, and some questions I have for you, if you don't mind.

Normally Thursday through Sunday I play poker most nights, so it may be early in the week.

EDIT- You mentioned "Originally I was thinking I would slowly try to ramp up to higher volume and/or higher buy-ins but if I'm being honest with myself I really don't have the time or the interest to put in the additional effort. So instead I've focused this year on optimizing what I'm doing at the lower limits and just cranking out a small but steady profit over the course of the season."

This is very important. If you have the discipline to do what you described above, and not try and get greedy in the short term, you are already avoiding many of the various pitfalls that most guys are subjected to when they try this more seriously.

Simply knowing what your personal threshold is, and how to balance that with gambling like this, is a huge advantage.

Its similar to a poker player being able to tell himself "I know I am either too tired, or on tilt enough where I am not playing my best, its better I just quit the game and come back another day".

Once people learn to show some discipline in scenarios like this, its a HUGE step towards being a substantial winner overall.

Thanks again,

TZM

Never. People like to play against their friends. Fantasy Football is a social thing.

Only the gambling addicts really prefer Fanduel, IMO.

I guess daily games are the way things are going recently, but it's a bit disappointing to see how much of the subscriber content is now aimed at daily players. It feels like quite a lot.

Thats a good point Rush..........

I have thought about mentioning it before, but something needs to be said.

We need separate categories for the daily site players.

(and I'm saying this as a non-daily site player at this point, though I will start soon)

I think that much of the info is cross-over, and can be used both ways, but there should AT LEAST be some thought into breaking down a separate section for the daily players.

Its certainly becoming more and more popular it seems, more than I realized.

I would guess that as far as "overall fantasy players" are concerned though, a bigger portion of the members here are more involved with the daily sites than just your "average run-of-the-mill" fantasy players off the street.

I lurked here a bit the last couple of years, but finally joined just before the season started a few weeks back.

This board is generally well run, but a separate area geared towards the daily site players would be handy, and a useful section for those players to interact.

Quite a generalization. What would you consider paid leagues with your friends?

I play in a weekly 30+ person league game on DraftKings. Everyone who plays are buddies of mine or played in past leagues with me. Costs $5 per week with the chance to win a over $150. Everyone loves it, and we all plan on leaving our additional leagues next season to grow this weekly game.

Hey RushHour. The daily content is in addition to traditional content, not replacing it. New staffers were added to cover the daily fantasy space, and while a couple of existing staffers also are contributing, it isn't at the expensive of traditional content.

Seems like an avalanche of dailies commercials this year and I get the sense that this genie is completely out of the bottle and blowing up. Also noticed at every FF site I tend to frequent that it is becoming heavily geared towards dailies (some sites put the DK or FD $ amount that player will cost them this week in the start em and sit em sections, etc).

That seems like a lot of work and effort to inlay into the weekly articles so I'm guessing the FF sites sense the shift also.
