I would be very nervous if I was a baseball fan. I'm still a bit nervous about football but I think there will be a season even if it is a shortened season. With all of the money from tv revenue, gambling etc at stake they are gonna figure out a way. It seems unlikely that there will be college football. If this is the case, the NFL could be played every day Thursday through Monday. Tv revenue would be through the roof. The ability to test, track and isolate at that time will be key. I think one way or another they are gonna figure it out. Maybe the season doesn't start until January and ends in April. The good news is we will have a lot more information by then.

I read somewhere that due to contractual obligations, the NFL could only play on the same days of the week as they always do, at least until they got to January. Maybe they could pay off whomever they have the agreements with, get a waiver, or start the season late enough it so that won't come into play. But as things stand now, up until January, they currently are only allowed to play on Mon, Thurs, and Sun.

I would hope they could work it out. The contract was written during normal times. I'd hope they could spread the wealth but I don't know anything about the legalities.

Contract with who? Doesn’t matter because the nfl can and will just buy anything out. No contract is going to stop them from Tuesday night football if they want it.

I think part of the reason is TV contracts. They have been working for a long time to make the draft a TV friendly affair and the ratings this year will be astronomical compared to every other year. At some point you would think they are trying to develop this thing as something they can sell to a broadcast/streaming network.
Being a draft-nerd I would absolutely love a seven night prime time draft with each round having it's own night. But I'm one of the few that would watch each and every round. Keep in mind, it wouldn't just be the added content of the draft itself..... it would also be all the spinoff shows during the day before that round discussing what are the best players available, who "won" last night, etc etc. The draft is probably more interesting that the SB to me because it involves EVERY team rather than just two teams.

They can't play Friday nights or Saturday afternoons to compete with HS or college football for much of season as part of Anti Trust legislation

The NFL will most def find a way to play. The college game is far more complicated with dealing with individual schools and whatnot.

Yes, doesn’t fall under one organization (all the conferences on their own), every state is different, unpaid players and you can’t send them out there if school is virtual. Total mess.

Agreed while the power 5 conferences have some nice TV deals (And Notre Dame) they also rely heavily on gate revenue so that will be gone. Some schools may still make money despite this most won't until they start cutting other sports which gets title IV involved. And then there's the whole 30,000 or so non student athletes the Presidents have to worry about. That's the biggest issue. I don't see any way we have college sports (I believe high school as well) until some time in 2021 at the earliest.

Ultimately it will come down to the union I think. If the players want to play to earn their money, they'll find a way. If they are too concerned about the risk, no season.

I guess it all comes down to whether a vaccine is a requirement for the start of the season.
I doubt there will be a vaccine but there is too much money at stake to not "figure out a way". These schools are still reeling from no March madness money.
That might mean an October start with no or limited crowds.
It might mean a February start.
But if there is no college football during the next school year, college athletics and the NCAA are done. This will start at the bottom with club sports and small conferences and ripple all the way to the top.

What I am struggling with is the talk of "delays" of a month or so.
We just started May. September is 4 months away. What could change so dramatically in one month that can't happen in the four months leading up to that month??
September start is not a possibility, but October is all systems go? Struggling with that concept.
Hoping my daughter doesn't miss her senior year of swimming in the fall. Summer swim looks like a lost cause.

Has there been any talk about someone like your daughter just taking next year off from school and starting her senior year in 2021 when things should be a lot safer and more stable? I'm not sure if that's feasible. I'm not sure what she'd do this year though. Maybe some volunteer work.

I think you answered your own question. One of the reasons for delays has nothing to do with the virus itself. Coaches will need to verify that their athletes are not only healthy but "in shape" for their sport.
(Not casting aspersions on your daughter's workout routines but the summer schedule for various sports ensures they're in shape for fall sports.)

I feel your pain (no pun intended). Our high school senior son was a game away from the Final Four in the D-1 state basketball tournament when the lights went out for good. His HS athletic career came to a full stop while he was scoring the game winning points in the last minute to advance to the next round. They had a legit chance to win the title. He was also slated to be one of the top hurdlers in track (which obviously never got off the ground). We came home that night to learn of Tom Hanks, Rudy Gobert, and incoming international flights getting limited. I joked with all the other parents on our way out of he gym that who knows, that could have been the last time they ever got to play . . . and it got hoots, laughs, and catcalls for a response.

IMO there's no chance they can solve the logistics around 100+ division one football teams, especially since they aren't paid. Hard to see how the college season isn't in the toilet already.

Maybe true...which is why they are now considering fragmented play.
1. Start the season on time.
2. Delay the season by a month or two but still play a full schedule in the fall and early winter.
3A. Delay the season by a month or two, cutting the non-conference schedule.
3B. Start the season in the spring and play a full schedule.
4. Some parts of the country play while others do not.
5. College football doesn’t occur during the 2020-21 academic calendar year.

I think the cost of the necessary precautions may lead to smaller conferences canceling seasons but the Power 5 conferences with larger TV$$$ play it out.
