STERN EYES FREE RADIO

May 9, 2006 -- HOWARD Stern says he's been offered a "major deal" to come back to regular radio via satellite radio - just like his longtime enemies Opie & Anthony.

"The joke could be on them if I get good and worked up [because] I got offered a major deal to go back to terrestrial and stay on satellite at the same time," Stern told his Sirius listeners in comments replayed and mocked yesterday by "O&A."

"Can you imagine if I go across town against them in all those markets and just kick some a-? That would really be cool," said Stern, who now broadcasts to about a tenth of his former audience.

If an offer was actually made to Stern, it most likely came from Citadel Broadcasting, which is in the process of acquiring Disney/ABC's radio division - including New York's WABC, WPLJ and WEPN - and is headed by former Infinity/CBS exec Farid Suleman.

Once Suleman gets the keys to ABC's outlets, he could instantly return Stern to major FM stations in New York, L.A., Chicago and other huge cities, if Sirius, which is paying $500 million over five years for Stern's supposedly exclusive services, agrees to trade exclusivity for cash.

During a recent investor conference call, CEO Mel Karmazin said he's not entertaining reverse-licensing offers but added, "It doesn't mean that we couldn't in the future."

Neither Stern's agent or Suleman returned calls seeking comment.

Why can regular radio get the NFl channel?

I just feel like the show is in a good place right now, and its hysterical.

I can't image it would keep its edge if it had to be toned down for regular radio.

Plus, I can't imagine Stern being willing to put up with the headache of censorship after finally being free of it.

Man, and I thought Opie was obsessed with Stern...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
 Cripes I'm just asking a question you tool, people posed the same question about XM. I'm a former sub to sirius that switched to xm when the myfi came out. When sirius produces a unit like the myfi(and streams 100 & 101  ) I'm switching back for the NFL talk/ first wave/stones/margaritaville/red peters etc.

If he gets millions on top of the $100 (?) he is already getting what does he care, so long as his "art" is not censored on satellite - hell he could see it as free advertising to bring more people over to Sirius.

Howard Stern Won't Return From Satellite By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer

Wed May 10, 2:41 PM ET

NEW YORK - No censorship, no fines, no    Federal Communications Commission. It's no wonder Howard Stern announced that there's no way he would abandon satellite radio for a return to traditional broadcasting.

"I'm very flattered terrestrial radio can't let go of me," Stern said Wednesday on his morning radio show. "But I would throw up if I had to go back. I'm never going back."

The self-proclaimed "King of All Media" said three companies had made overtures through his agent for a terrestrial deal, but there was no interest from his end. He did not name the companies, although radio industry expert Tom Taylor said it was no surprise that Stern would draw such attention.

"He's a terrific talent, and star talent is always going to be in demand," said Taylor, editor of the trade publication Inside Radio.

Stern, five months into a five-year, $500 million contract with Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., said he was thrilled by the show's evolution since his January arrival. When Stern announced his move in October 2004, Sirius had about 650,000 subscribers. That figure now stands above 4 million.

"I've never been happier," Stern said. "We're flying high and doing great."

Stern made his comments during an on-air interview Wednesday with The Associated Press. He insisted on speaking with the AP about the reports that he might consider a simulcasting deal where he split time between Sirius and a traditional outlet.

Stern competitors Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia recently made such an agreement with CBS Radio. Stern worked for CBS before making his move to satellite in January. CBS was once part of Viacom Inc. but now is part of CBS Corp.

Stern said that Opie and Anthony's return to traditional radio signified their "failure" on satellite, and he reiterated his intent to continue his program exclusively on satellite.

"The story is I wouldn't do it (terrestrial radio) for any reason," Stern said. "Not for money. I left because I couldn't stand the censorship. I couldn't stand" the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC and Stern were locked in a long, pitched battle that led to staggering fines for the content of the shock jock's show.

Opie and Anthony, on their morning show, continued their long-running feud with Stern by questioning his claims. "He's lying through his teeth," said Hughes about any offers for Stern to come back on terrestrial radio.

On Tuesday, the New York Post identified one of the potential bidders for Stern as Citadel Broadcasting Corp., whose chief executive, Farid Suleman, worked with Stern for several years at Infinity Broadcasting until his departure for Citadel in March 2002.

Calls to Citadel for comment were not immediately returned.
Thank God. I would be pissed if he went back to terrestrial in a split deal.

You know what, props to Stern for this one. He turned down what I'm sure was a "boatload of cash" to stay true to what he wanted his show to be.

Think Cabbie gets out at the end of June or sometime in July.

The Blue Iris having sex with Riley Martin bit was hilarious. "Ahhhhhhhhhh look man."

So, CBS wouldn't sell the tapes to Stern/Sirius for several million dollars.

Then they sue, settle for 2 million, and the tapes are thrown in.

Purely a PR move for CBS so they can claim they got something, while selling those tapes for less than they originally could've.

Great deal for Stern and Sirius. I anticipate Howard 102 is in the works, and these old shows will run 24/7. And, I'd bet that sponsors buy commerical time on that channel too. These tapes will have paid for themselves within a few years.

Is a 3rd channel really necessary considering all the worthless junk on already on 101?

I stopped listening to 101 when 100 went into full time Stern replay mode.Still, I don't think Stern is going to drop Bubba and Ferral to make room for more repeats.

Plus, I imagine he enjoys the flexibility of being able to create shows like Riley Martin's and whatnot.

Read the article again:
CBS Radio will get $2 million from Sirius Satellite Radio to convey the rights of recordings of The Howard Stern Show.

Other terms of the settlement were not disclosed , but in essence Sirius is paying that sum for decades' worth of Stern archival material that it can now use on its air.

They were settling a lawsuit against Stern over his jump to Sirius Satellite Radio, but it’s not clear how much Stern might have paid to resolve the dispute.

In a joint statement, CBS and Stern said they settled, partly through licensing recordings of Stern’s old show to Sirius for $2 million. The release refers to additional payments without specifying how much and who precisely paid.
I read this as CBS was allowed to announce that they got $2 million for those old tapes but wasn't allowed to specify how much else they got from both Stern and Sirius in the lawsuit settlement agreement. If you think that CBS walked away with only $2 million, you're crazy.

Ferrel is about at useful to me as Jim Rome, and I guess the Westcoast feed makes some sense, but less now that 100 is on a constant loop. I think the old stuff will just be peppered in during breaks.

Considering that their lawsuit was completely baseless, I'm not so certain they got a whole lot more than 2 million.

what time are the new shows? I've just started listening and have only heard replays... TIA
Vacation all week i think.and in case you didn't know, the live show is 6am-11am when not on vacation.
