Well...we are a loyal bunch. To the Green Bay Packers.Ive learned long ago that loyalty just to players is overrated.Players will come and go. But the Packers will always be the Packers and that is who I am the biggest fan of.The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. He's still one of my favorite players ever to play the game, and I went out of my way to get tickets to the Pats/Vikes game earlier this year to get one last chance to see him. I used to buy into the notion that the Green Bay contingent was special - that there was some kind of loyal fanbase who bought shares in the team and sold out the stadium in the freezing cold despite their tiny market and was part of the lore of the NFL. Now I look at them as just one more group of jaded fans who will turn on the greatest player in franchise history and talk about him like just another former player in the era of free agency. This is easily the uncoolest response by a fanbase that I can remember to any event in sports in my lifetime.

As Packer fans we set very high standards for our players both on and off the field. Sorry to disappoint you.bostonfred said:The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. Im sure there will be some that will consider him a traitor and never want to see him step back in Lambeau again.I think those are still few and far between. But it all depends on how things go down with him when he does retire, and how the Packers handle the situation.also, none of those guys left in the same fashion Favre did.It has not really happened like that before, each situation is different.OK, so there were other great Packers players. When Favre retires, are you going to honor him the same way you honor the other great Packers? Would you feel about him the way that San Francisco feels about Montana after they let him go to Kansas City while they kept Steve Young? Or Jerry Rice, who went across the bay to their non-conference rivals while the 49ers sucked? I don't think you'll meet a San Francisco fan in your lifetime who talks the way that Green Bay fans do about Favre these days. It's the worst response by a fanbase I can remember.
I know what you are trying to say and maybe I'm just old, have selective memory or what not, but I don't ever remember those two 49'er greats ever acting like Favre has for the past five years. Frankly, I can't remember any player for that matter having such a hold on a franchise the way that Favre did with Green Bay, Jets & now the Vikings. I suspect that if Favre had grown up with any other team than the Packers, played like Favre always has played, and treated that organization & fans in the same manner that he has for the past five years or so, that people's reactions on both sides would be similar to what you're seeing now from Packer fans. He's a master at what he does and a very still a very good Qb but I got tired of all the drama and the lack of accountability from Favre a very long time ago. Will I welcome back someday down the road after he finally retires? Sure, I want to welcome him back as a former Packer hero but in the back of my mind I still worry that like a bitter ex, he'll turn everything into a media circus that's all about him and not the team, organization or fans.OK, so there were other great Packers players. When Favre retires, are you going to honor him the same way you honor the other great Packers? I see you are in Milwaukee. Not sure if you have ever lived in Green Bay or near Green Bay or not, but I have. I lived there all through Favre's tenure from the second Super Bowl to his last game. What Favre and those 90's Packers did to Green Bay is nothing short of remarkable. That city, unless the team is irrelevant for 20 years, changed dramatically during Favre's time. That city, as well as Milwaukee owes a lot to Green Bay and those Packers that Favre lead. That said, I am now in Milwaukee too. During my time in Green Bay, I have family in Milwaukee and would visit periodically. Point is, somewhere along the line on Hwy 43 and Hwy 41 there is a clear shift in the way the media reports things about the Packers. Milwaukee media acts as if the Packers are either the Milwaukee Packers or the Wisconsin Packers and what the Milwaukee media does is terrible. Also, the people in Milwaukee have a clear shift in how they react to Favre. The people in Milwaukee, like the media, treat the Packers as if the team is there's. And, its not. Green Bay is much more humble when it comes to the Packers and anything to do with the Packers.Just a note quick. The Ryan Grant thread in the Shark Pool is a great thread. People in Milwaukee will treat it like Ryan Grant is kind and whatever else because he did that. That is normal stuff around Green Bay. The Packers visit the hospitals, local businesses on a weekly basis up there.Anyway, the local media of Milwaukee helps to turn the people of Milwaukee against Favre these past how many ever years. In fact, the media much more so than Favre talked about him retiring and always brought it up save the last couple of years. As much as people want to hate Favre for the last couple of years, I never hear in the same breath that those same people hate the media as well. They always side with what the media reports. It is sad really. As to bostonfred's post. Go up to Green Bay and you will have a much different story about Favre than you would in Milwaukee or any national media outlet. It is night and day. Also, if you go to Madison, they don't care because they have the Badgers and that town bleeds cardinal and white... not green and gold... and the Madison media does not hide that fact.I know what you are trying to say and maybe I'm just old, have selective memory or what not, but I don't ever remember those two 49'er greats ever acting like Favre has for the past five years. Time will heal all wounds. Curly Lambeau didn't leave on the greatest terms with the organization or fans as he attempted a take over of the team. Yet the Packers organization with full fan support still renamed the stadium in his honor years later. #4 will hang on the wall of Lambeau Field with the other retired numbers some day. And the fans will cheer. You can be sure of it.OK, so there were other great Packers players. When Favre retires, are you going to honor him the same way you honor the other great Packers? Not true.As to how the fanbase will receive Favre down the road -Favre has splintered the fan base a bit. There are those that sided with Favre and think GB mngmt wronged him. There are those who side with GB and think Favre wronged the team. And there are those in between who think the whole thing is way over blown.Time heals and X years down the road, when the time is right for both sides, the Packers will bring Favre back to Lambeau for whatever kind of ceremony they want to do, and I think the reception for him will be overwhelmingly positive.IMOedit: Kleck beat me to the punch!!Also, if you go to Madison, they don't care because they have the Badgers and that town bleeds cardinal and white... not green and gold... and the Madison media does not hide that fact.
Very interesting perspective. Thanks for responding. I love watching the sheer joy that Favre play the game with. Always have, but I was never a Favre lover. Just to many bone headed plays that veteran QB's should not make just bothered me to much to really connect with him. Favre is a game changer, both in a good way and in a bad way. I've always wondered if a solid game managing QB would have had the success that Favre had in Green Bay or if it truly was all due to Favre being Favre. Could Trent Dilfer had won a Superbowl in Green Bay? I know he didn't win games in heroic fashion the way Favre has but he also never lost important games the way Favre has either.I see you are in Milwaukee. Not sure if you have ever lived in Green Bay or near Green Bay or not, but I have. I lived there all through Favre's tenure from the second Super Bowl to his last game. I don't think you can reach this conclusion if you've been paying attention, which I would expect most fans of other teams would not have done these past few years. Bill Simmons compared it to the Roger Clemmons situation for Red Sox fans, and encouraged Packer fans to boo lustily when Favre made his first return to Lambeau as a Viking last season. I didn't think Simmons exactly hit the nail on the head so to speak, but I think he at least partially understands and explains a reasonable reaction. Favre didn't just leave town, he did everything within his power to undermine the team on his way out, including actually bringing his circus act to training camp and disrupting nearly an entire week of practice just to force his hand. For comparison, here is how a recent Packer reacted when he was cut, even though he still has ability and is already playing for another team: Al Harris half-page newspaper adPersonally, I don't think Packer fans are any better or worse or materially different than any other fan base in the world and I think most every fan base would react similarly under the same circumstances.bostonfred said:The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. And it doesn't change the fact that Favre gave the Packers a QB that they never had, won 3 MVPS, and played the game in a way that way that not many do in addition to helping them win after two decades of losing. Actually they are facts. You have internet access look it up yourself - I found it in a few seconds. Besides it won't change your mind - you'll continue the Favre worship no matter what I or anyone else shows you.I'm not here to argue with you or anyone else - but to say Favre has been completely innocent and that the Packer fans are "haters" just because they choose not to root for a guy of questionable character? Would you feel about him the way that San Francisco feels about Montana after they let him go to Kansas City while they kept Steve Young? Or Jerry Rice, who went across the bay to their non-conference rivals while the 49ers sucked? I don't think you'll meet a San Francisco fan in your lifetime who talks the way that Green Bay fans do about Favre these days. It's the worst response by a fanbase I can remember.to back up those facts
If that's really the mentality in Green Bay, then I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to play for the Packers.sho nuff said:Well...we are a loyal bunch. To the Green Bay Packers.Ive learned long ago that loyalty just to players is overrated.Players will come and go.

Besides it won't change your mind - you'll continue the Favre worship no matter what I or anyone else shows you.I'm not here to argue with you or anyone else - but to say Favre has been completely innocent and that the Packer fans are "haters" just because they choose not to root for a guy of questionable character? Ridiculous.
sho isn't well. Ask any TRUE Packer fan about loyalty to players or coaches. Lombardi didn't finish coaching the Packers. As anyone can see there are several people here that are jaded when in comes to Favre and his career with the Packers. Let them feel that way. Watching Favre all those years is something that I will never forget not to mention a Super Bowl win. Yes, he messed up recently but that won't change the memories of him as a Packer. Brett played for the Packers in a way that not many players do.If that's really the mentality in Green Bay, then I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to play for the Packers.sho nuff said:Well...we are a loyal bunch. To the Green Bay Packers.Ive learned long ago that loyalty just to players is overrated.Players will come and go. Yet strangely Favre is the only player I know of that Pack fans feel this way about.Hmmmm.... is it uncool Packer fans?... or maybe it's Favre's actions toward the franchise and his fans.bostonfred said:The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. I don't think that's true. Most Packer fans are loyal the the team first and players/coaches second.Yet strangely Favre is the only player I know of that Pack fans feel this way about.Hmmmm.... is it uncool Packer fans?... or maybe it's Favre's actions toward the franchise and his fans.bostonfred said:The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre. Oh..despite your opinion of me, I'm just fine. And I am a true PACKER fan..loyal to the team first...players second. It's not that I dislike guys when they leave...but I dont cheer for them...esprciallt against the Packers and especially not if they are playing for a rival team.sho isn't well. No...bostonfred has it correct. I at one time also thought Packer fans were special (been a fan since the days of Steve Odom). But this entire Favre saga has shown them to be no better than any other fanbase and quite possibly worse than most NFL fans. Maybe the arrogance/smugness came from the tradition of winning (thank you Brett). Because I certainly do not remember the fans being holier than thou when the Packers sucked for a quarter century.Yet strangely Favre is the only player I know of that Pack fans feel this way about.Hmmmm.... is it uncool Packer fans?... or maybe it's Favre's actions toward the franchise and his fans.bostonfred said:The thing that gets me in all of this is the Packers fans who have turned on Favre.
