Humanitarian crisis at US border (1 Viewer)

What's the problem with building a big wall?

Seems like a much cheaper way than paying a ton of police to patrol everywhere. Probably more effective too.
Because that's not what we're about. And because it would seriously impact our trade and relations with Mexico and Latin America in general. And because it would be viewed, correctly, as racist (since there is no talk of a wall on our northern border.)
To keep all of those Canadian orphans from spilling across the border?
Christo, it is my firm belief that if we faced a similar crisis on our Canadian border, nobody would be talking about a wall. The common response would be "OMG, how can we help those poor children? Tell me where I can send money to help."
Get back to us when that happens.
It happens all the time.
Canadian orphans stream across the border all the time?
Arcadian driftwood...

Perry: ‘We Don’t Have The Resources’ To Secure The Texas Border

HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Governor Rick Perry, R-Tex., said that the Lone Star State is being flooded with “record high numbers” of people from terrorist-linked countries, and that Texas simply doesn’t have the resources to secure the border.

Appearing on Fox News Tuesday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said that the state outright lacks the resources and the manpower to secure the 1,200-mile border shared with Mexico.

“We don’t have the resources, nor the manpower, to be able to do that for the 1,200 miles. If we did, we would.”

Perry warned: “We have record high numbers of other than Mexicans being apprehended at the border. these are people that are coming from states like Syria that have substantial connections back to terrorist regimes and terrorist operations. So we’re seeing record, historic high numbers of these individuals being apprehended.”

Perry noted that he warned the Obama administration about the current border crisis in 2012, but is still waiting for a response from the federal government.

“We flagged this issue in 2012 and have yet to even have a response as far as I know, from not just, not from the president, but not even from his administration,” said Perry. “[Obama] is totally and absolutely either inept or making some decisions that are not in the best interest of American citizens, particularly from a public safety standpoint.”

“We’ve been sounding that alarm and putting substantial Texas dollars into it,” Perry continued. “We have a request in for even more dollars going towards border security from the Texas standpoint. But it’s 1,200 miles and the idea that the State of Texas should be doing this, I get it, my citizens require me to keep them safe.”
So now the terrorists are coming across the Mexican border? What a load of crap.

I would regard it as motivated by need. The northern border is not being over run, the southern border is. 34 Million people north of us, one Billion to the south.

But in a rare admission, a Justice Department memo and other documents obtained by the San Antonio Express-News say federal authorities know terror suspects are in this country and know who allegedly helped bring them here through Mexico and Texas: a Somali man in custody near San Antonio.

Racist

Here's another one of those threads where Tim is out of his mind level of off base / ignorant.... But will post double the next person.... Convinced that words > facts.

The fact that he thinks terrorists infiltrating thru a porous Mexican border is BS just shows how absolutely positively definitively CLUELESS the guy is.

Seriously dude... Give it up.

Wow, timmay.....where to begin. I don't get what the heck you are getting at.

The problem is way bigger than a handful of orphans. There is an epidemic of poverty in the nations to our south. There aren't just poor innocent kids coming across the border, but drug lords and, yes, terrorists. Stopping illegal immigration isn't about turning away a poor hungry child, but keeping our citizens safe. Also, orphans in the US don't have a great track record. There is inadequate foster and adoptive care across the nation and the government is a terrible parent.

Trying to play the racist card on this is completely asinine. I don't care if the people are white, black, brown or purple, the border issue would be exactly the same because the socio-economic issues would be the same.

Listen I have always, without a doubt, disagreed with Tim on this subject, but as a person who has been part of this site forever, I give him credit that Tim is consistent, He supports open borders because (IMO naively so) his whole foundation of his argument comes from 1910 and 1920 references where people came by the Statute of Liberty and felt that sense of pride of coming here. Unfortunately, that examples fails because everyone of them--CHECKED IN!!!

Sorry, we live now where 80% of the people coming here from the South don't feel that way today (sorry Tim). There is no American Dream, It is what can I get here that I can't get from where I was at. They don't want to assimilate. Yes, you can reference the taco truck vendor who has done so well that he has two more taco trucks, but I can show you 10 more that just want to take and worse yet, hurt this country. I really would encourage you to spend some time in your local courthouse and see the financial drain, just from a judicial sense, the illegals have on this country. I see people in the courthouse weekly actually screaming at employees because they have the nerve to not speak Spanish. The interpreter budget has gone up 100 fold in my district--yet there is no money for raises for the actual Judicial employees. This happens weekly Tim.

My wife is a special ed teacher. Her performance evals are all based on data, but she has kids of illegal families that the kids have special needs and don't speak fluent English. So my wife has to defend herself on performance evals because she is trying to help these kids because she gets zero involvement or support at home. And ultimately she is rated sort of proficient rather than proficient, despite trying hard to help these families, just because they don't care about this country..

Remember Tim, every time you start on one of your BS posts about how good illegals are for the US, just understand no one is denying them the right from coming here legally. Walk to the border office and fill out some forms

Oh gosh, I am sorry they have to file some paperwork and it takes time, but guess what, as a US citizen I have to file a crap load of paperwork yearly, from local tax returns to federal tax returns. to requests for a permit to just build a simple deck.

With rights, comes responsibilities--join the crowd.

Holy crap, dude. I'm usually pretty sympathetic towards you since I think a lot of the hate is just mob mentality, but yikes... This just fans the flames.

I always thought Timmy was about 50% schtick, however with that last one I am pushing it closer to 99%. There's no way any semi intelligent person would think this right?

I think it's nearly gotten to the point that we tell the Mexican government to control their people or we take over the country, simple as that.

I posted this YEARS ago, with proof. It's not disputable. And now MORE proof has been posted in this thread. But as usual, you've disappeared and will probably just pretend it wasn't posted when you do decide to return to this thread. And you wonder why I mock you.

Thanks for the responses. Also, thanks to all those people who sent me "likes" for my comments in this thread. I'll try to respond to a few points:

1. Buddy Ball, my beliefs on this issue have been consistent for a very long time (well before I arrived in this forum). There is no shtick. As for whether or not I am smart or stupid, that's another matter.

2. Strike, your "evidence", like the evidence that Rove posted, like the evidence that Rick Perry spoke of, is crap. Terrorists arrive here in a variety of ways, including across the southern border. But to use that as an excuse to close the border is asinine, and in flies in the face of all of your arguments about how gun control restrictions won't be effective (most of which I have come to accept). No gun control law is going to prevent a school shooting, and no fence is going to prevent a terrorist from coming here. It's the same principle.

3. Court Jester, I agree with most of your stated concerns about illegal immigrants. When I claim they are a benefit, what I mean to say is that they are a NET benefit. The positive, IMO, outweighs the negative. But that doesn't mean the negative doesn't exist. But putting that all aside, this very real tragedy involves starving children. No matter how you feel about illegal immigration, how can we turn our back on them?

With Tim, what you read is rarely what he meant to say apparently. Between that and his personal dictionary of terms, it's tough to get a grasp on the point. This Canadian border comment is the latest in a long list of "what I meant was....." types of statements.

We have millions of poor, homeless, and/or malnourished children in the US, and we don't have unlimited resources. What could go wrong with spreading those resources thinner?

I don't think there are MILLIONS of homeless and malnourished children in this country. But however many there are, please don't tell me we don't have the resources to feed them all. That's nonsense.

No matter how you feel about illegal immigration, how can we turn our back on them?
What about our own poor, starving children?
We feed and shelter them as well, of course.
And the ones in Iraq?

Syria?

Somalia?

You feed and shelter them too, or is it someone else's problem?

Well theyre not here. But to answer your question, it's not a bad idea at all. It might accomplish a whole lot more than bombs.

Send them some pie in the sky pizza?

Actually, thanks to the brilliance of Norman Bourlaug (one of our greatest Americans who few have ever heard of) we have the ability to feed ALL the starving children in the world at very little cost. Instead we pay our farmers not to grow certain crops. There are economic reasons for this, but if you can justify it on a moral basis, be my guest. I've never been able to.

I don't think there are MILLIONS of homeless and malnourished children in this country. But however many there are, please don't tell me we don't have the resources to feed them all. That's nonsense.
1.6 million homeless alone. And 17 million (very likely overlap of 100% of homeless) have "food insecurity".
That's terrible. More than I thought. It's a national disgrace. We need to feed them all, AND the ones at our borders. There should be no greater priority of our resources, IMO. Food and shelter come first, period.

Wow... what is that, 4 times in this thread now that time has declared something as fact or openly defied a statement, only to have facts dropped in his lap... followed by him changing the subject?

It's like predicting sunny weather in san diego...

Immigrants from our southern border turned into racism, securing our northern border with a wall, then feeding and sheltering needy children already in this country. Oh, and you threw in education for all of them as well at some point - there is likely more, but I just breezed through the thread fairly quickly.

That's adding to the subject in response to what people posted. But none of that is CHANGING the subject. The main subject of this thread, as I understand it, is what to do about these starving and pitiful children that have shown up on our borders, without documents. My answer is: feed them and shelter them. That comes first, then, if we can, take them in.
