I am donating a kidney to my Dad (1 Viewer)

Inaction is effortless, and less conducive to living. Here are a few “actions” that have been proven to prolong life: Going for walks. Making art. Seeing a therapist. Having pets and plants in the house. Stretching. Drinking lots of water. Making new friends. Spending time outdoors. Eating more fruits and vegetables. Managing stress.
Words to live by, man.  (but not for your dad)

My Karma is average but my wife's Karma is way up there and she's on your case. You did good.

I donated half of my liver to my father back in 2002. Obviously I'm still around, and my father is doing well. I will say it's odd to go into a hospital healthy and come out less than 100%, but it's for a good cause. Stop by and keep us informed!
Equally impressive. :2cents:
Technically this is only half as impressive.
No, he gave up half of his total liver...moops is giving up half of his total kidneys.Good luck moops. I hope to see you back here soon.

Very courageous thing you are doing. Good luck to you and your father for long, healthy lives.

Wow. Good for you.You should get a free lifetime FBG subscription.
Then buy him one... :tfp: Best of luck moops. What does the recovery process look like?
In the hospital for 1-4 days. Depending on how I feel. Surgery is at 9AM tomorrow (have to be in there at 5:45). Get out of surgery at 1:00ish, in recovery room until 4 or 5. Get wheeled up to my room, get breathing tubes and catheter removed...get my morphine all hooked up and stuff. They make me get up the next morning though and walk around and such. I'll probably stay in there until Friday. Mostly cause I dont want my Dad to be the only one in there for awhile. Not that he will be alone. Lots of friends and family will be around. My brother and his wife and 2 kids came up from Florida. My girlfriends Dad and fiancee flew out from Monterey. Girlfriend flew in with me from Minneapolis. It may be a damn crowded place, actually.Probably will be out of work for 4 weeks. Work has been great. All my time off is paid, so that is cool. Cant really lift anything over 20 pounds or so for nearly 3 months though. Pretty good risk of a hernia I guess. That magnesium citrate stuff tastes like ###. :scared:

Got anyone who can update us tomorrow evening?

make sure to randomly make comments to your pops afterwards like, "You have to go to the bathroom now."
:thumbup:Every time you hang out with new people, you should make a point to say, "Ever since I gave him that kidney, we've had a special connection. We even finish each other's..." and then stop.

Wow, no idea how I missed this before. Will be thinking of you and your Dad tomorrow, moops, and hoping for good news very soon.

Probably too late to get a reply, but can you or anyone else explain the connection here?
I think kidneys are connected to the ab muscles.
I think it all depends on how they go in to retrieve the organ. With my surgery they cut straight through my abs and opened me up. I basically have the Benz logo on my stomach now. I had to give my abs time to heal and strengthen up. I imagine that this would be the same. Although I'm not certain they will go through the front of the torso for the kidney, but probably going through the back muscles. I'm sure the lower back muscles will require as much time to heal as they provide a lot of support with lifting as well.

My Dad is peeing for the first time in over a year!!! He has a catheter in, but nonetheless, he is creating his very own urine.

I feel decent. Sore as hell, but they have me all doped up with some good pain meds. Probably will head home tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for all the well wishes, my friends. It is always good to hear that folks are pulling for you.
