I have to admit.....I like Bill Cowher (1 Viewer)

Pat Patriot

Seeing Cowher last night with the Steelers 75th anniversary team and doing chest bumps with his former players, he just seemed like a cool guy.

I always thought he was a bit of a phony but I'm starting to warm to the guy.

Honestly, I see him at my local grocery store a lot and he chats it up with the "cold cut girls" (think Lunch Ladies) all the time...he seems like a very nice, friendly guy.

During draft season this year, I was on the phone with a buddy of mine waxing poetic about the best FF draft values, when I look behind me and Cower is looking over at me...I almost said "I know you like Driver, but Ward is the more consistent Vet WR...actually, let me ask Bill what he thinks"...but I didn't have the balls...regret it to this day.

As a Steeler homer,

Overrated as a coach, but a good guy nonetheless. When he does come back, I think it'll show he's not as great as people now proclaim him.

The guy did lose 4 AFC Championship games and 1 super bowl, however, it takes something to get that far.

BB sucked in Cleveland and look at the Patriots. I really don't believe the fuss about coaches. You really think players play harder & better for one coach over another? It's all about structure, preparedness, the coordinators & how they call plays.

Better than Andy Reid, or Dennis Green, Marty Schottenheimer. Count your blessings.

The guy had a 62% career winning percentage and made 6 AFCCGs in 15 seasons... and you're calling him overrated? Pittsburgh turned over its entire roster many times over, and Cowher was creating dominant teams with QBs like Kordell Stewart. He's a hell of a coach- one of the 5 best in the game before he retired, along with Dungy, Belichick, Shanahan, and Reid.

I'm not a fan of Pittsburgh at all, but how is Cowher overrated? His team was decimated with free agency year after year, and they just kept winning over and over again.O'Donnell, Stewart, Maddox, a rookie named Roethlisberger. These aren't Marinos or Favres we're talking about. He had them playing at a high level every season. Definitely deserves his accolades imo.

I remember one time when Cowher thought the ref's made a bogus call on a penalty (12 men on the field maybe?), then had a picture printed that proved he was correct, walked over to the official, showed him, crumpled the picture up and stuffed it in the ref's pocket. Priceless. I've always liked the guy.

I liked it when he almost decked that Jaguar on the sideline returning a blocked FG for a TD. Would have loved to see him take the guy out.

Attention Bill Cowher: The St. Louis Rams have alot of talent and will have a top 3 pick, please come here and turn this ship around. PS. You will love a healthy sjax. Power running is your style and there isn't a better power runner in football.

He's recently said that he regretted doing that because of the example it gave to his (then about 7yr and 10yr old) daughters. But that was a classic CAHHHRRRR moment for sure.

Paging Mr. Peterson...Paging Mr. Hutchinson...... you are needed in the owner's office.Sorry. If it isn't Cleveland, Minnesota is very appealing right now. T.Jackson remind you of Kordell?

Unless you are a fan of a team that the Steelers beat on regularly during his tenure (see: Cleveland), how can you not like Bill Cowher?

Oh my god! Thank you for bringing back that memory! I started laughing hard remembering that! Classic! I bet every one of us has wanted to do that to a ref at one time or another. Heck, I've wanted to do that to an ump in slow pitch softball a couple of times. You da man Bill!! :bag:

Cowher gets a bad rap for the 4 home AFC Championship Game losses but only the first loss to SD is really that bad looking back. Take into consideration the QB match-ups for all 4 games:

SD-PIT (Humphries/O'Donnell)

DEN-PIT (Elway/Kordell)

NE-PIT1 (Brady-Bledsoe/Kordell)

NE-PIT2 (Brady-Ben (rookie)

Pretty impressive job of coaching really. During his time with the Steelers no NFL team had more wins. He made it to 6 AFC Championship Games, 2 Super Bowls, 1 win despite not ever having a real franchise QB until Ben matured his 2nd year.

I always love that stat. That's a great way to determine which coaches are the real standouts at their profession. IIRC, since Cowher retired, the only active coaches who could make that claim at any point in their career are Shanahan, Reid, Belichick, and Dungy. Pretty impressive company, although Reid lost his claim a couple of years ago (during the 6-10 season), and Shanahan's claim was just usurped by the Pats this season.

OK, love it or leave it but he had the most wins because he was the longest tenured coach. it does make sense in some circles.

4-5 people quoted my Cowher 'overrated' post. This may not necessarily make hom overrated, but I do think he is bcause:1) Special Teams always sucked, especially coverage. Im not sure which NE game that was at the moment ('01, '02), but it was ST that cost the Steelers. Put it on the ST coach, but ultimately its BCowher.2) Cowher's time management sucked. (See ATL last year).Im not sayin this makes Cowher a bad coach, but these are 2 key components of being successfull that Cowher consistently failed at. Any Stiller fans disagree?!?

Yes.Bobby Aprils Special teams were awesome.....Our Special Teams were ranked near the top several years......They certainly didn't suck in the Super Bowl against Dallas.Time management, you look at one game, I look at a career....his record after leading by 11 is astonishing 92-2-1 or something like that....that's Cowher managing the clock. Were you one one of the yinzers booing Joey Porter when he was announced a member of the 75th Anniversary Team this past Monday Night?

Re-read the stat. It's not more wins than any other coach, which would be directly related to length of tenure. It's more wins than any other TEAM. Those teams were there as long as Cowher.

I've always liked Bill Cowher and if I was a player, I would have liked to play for him. I loved that he used to get in people's faces and try to pump them up and meet them walking off the field to let them know they did a great job. I hope he gets another job somewhere soon.

As for Bobby April , good call, but Im pretty sure he was gone by end of the 96 season, so the Stiller ST sucked for the past 10 years (Randle El aside) and Cowher did nothing about it. And as I said, it was coverage that always killed them, as well as blocking to a degree. My interpretation on time management was calling timeouts at opportune times, not wasting them, and not leaving points on the field. THAT is what I mean by bad time management and I will stand by that. Yeah, when leading we ran the ball, but who doesn't

As for Porter, I got no problem with him making the team. So NO, I was not booing him. He's real high on the all-time Steeler sack list, and above that, he was the emotional leader of the defense, and really the team, for anywhere from 5-8 years, as well as being instrumental in the 05/06 Super Bowl win/getting there. Fine by me

...again, Im not saying Cowher was a bad coach, but he is considered an all-time great. Do all-time great have those flaws? ST is important no mater how you slice it, and time management cost them more than the game I mentioned

:lmao: Cowher was a GREAT coach. I would be very pleased if Tomlin has a record like Cowher after 15 years.

Please come coach the Chargers, I know we screwed over your boy Marty, but Im thinking of about 8-10 million reasons a year to forget about that

Great coach, great organization. One of the few organizations that actually have a goal of winning it all in mind, and not just winning enough to keep butts in the seats. There are maybe 10 total teams in the league that actually have a SB as their goal.

Wish the Broncos would hire him. Broncos need some fire and he would provide it. Shanny is brilliant, but horrible at being a GM (which he basically is) and being a motivator (which this team needs).

The big thing is that Cowher really has his pick of jobs. Why on earth would he pick a job working with A.J. Smith? Smith is an egomaniac, and ownership has already made it abundantly clear that he's the ultimate authority on that team. I can't see the Chargers being a very desirable coaching destination until Smith is gone, which means they're going to have to rely a lot on retreads and rookies, the sort of guys who can't say no to them because there are no other choices.

Shanny's not nearly as bad of a GM as people make him out to be. He's not great, but I'd call him above-average. The GM's only job is assembling talent under the cap, and Denver has fielded a lot of very talented teams under Shanny, which means he must be doing SOMETHING right.

Yes he was overrated. His post-season numbers don't lie.

First off, the Postseason is supposedly the best 37.5% of the league- the upper echelon, the elite. Second off, his career postseason record is 12-9, a 57% winning rate. Yes, that's a little bit below his 62% regular season winning rate... but that's because the postseason teams he faces are better, on average, than the regular season teams he faces. You're right, his post-season numbers DON'T lie. A very strong winning record against the best 37.5% of the league indicates to me that Cowher was, in fact, a damn fine coach. Do you realize that Cowher has a better postseason winning percentage than Tony Dungy, Don Shula, Mike Holmgren, Tom Landry, John Madden, and **** Vermeil, just to name a few?

No, the Steelers had more wins during his tenure than any other NFL team, not any other coach. It has nothing to do with his longevity - some other teams had 5 coaches during that span.

As a Steelers fan, I've always loved Bill. Do you remember the time on Monday night, (I think it was against the Jags) there was a field goal that would have won the game for Pittsburgh that was blocked, and some guy was running down the field, and Cowher came this close to running onto the field to tackle the guy? If you watch the tape, he stops himself just at the last second, Incredible!

After the SB win, NFL films did an outstanding retrospective of Cowher's career. They showed his emotions after the loss in 95, how he hugged his daughter and ran off the field with such class. It's impossible for me to watch that film without tears.

When I compare Bill Cowher as a class act and a human being to the current coach being lauded as the greatest of all time, it ain't even a contest. Yes, Bellichick is probably a better HC, much as I hate to admit it. I'll still take Cowher any day of the week.

Correct. The Steelers won more games than any other team in the years that Bill Cowher was their head coach.Love him or hate him that is an impressive feat.
