When I think of hockey I found it very realistic because I play it.
Nothing seemed too fantastic or over the top.

It's a true story. He's joking around.
It was a bit schmaltzy as most sports movies are, but I enjoyed it. That game was one of my first great sports memories, even though I was too young to fully grasp the political climate. I was just old enough to know how good that Russian team was and just old enough to process that Russia were the Big Bad Guys on the world stage.

All time great movie...love it..(unfortunately at this point) I am old enough to remember the actual Miracle...this movie takes that phenomenal event and simply makes it entertaining...if you want it to be totally realistic than watch a documentary...if you want to not think for 2 hours and watch Herbie/Kurt kick some commie butt and follow it up with Aerosmith singing Dream On than pull up a chair...

The "Flying V" play was totally unrealistic. The movie was unwatchable after that.

Now THAT was a realistic movie. Gretzky probably has flash backs watching that, remembering when he scored 300 goals in 80 games against kids several years older than he, but getting no respect because he never beat up the toughest guy in the league.

A little tangent...we used to do a home and away with a team from Ontario back in the youth hockey days...this was right at the end of the Bobby Orr era who at the time had just transformed the game and was unlike any other hockey player (by a long shot)...all the kids and parents from the Ontario team were talking about this young kid who they said was gonna be at least at good as #4 which in New England was basically fighting words...then they started telling us about his stats and they were so ridiculous it was unbelievable...it really sounded foolish at the time (remember, pre-internet) especially in the mid-70's...well, turns out that kid was the Great One and a couple of years later he was suiting up for The Indianapolis Racers and the rest is history...will never forget that...
