As an Eagles fan I always liked ragging on him, but as an NFL fan this is sad news.  Obviously I don't follow Giants news so this is a shock to me.  Definition of a "franchise" QB and the face of the team for a generation.  Wish him well going forward.

And yes, a class move to accept the demotion without artificially extending the streak.

I still wonder why this didn't happen at the trade deadline. say what you want about Eli, he's still better than at least 10 QBs who are currently starting in the NFL, especially Bortles. With a decent QB like Eli, Jags could be a real contender, with Bortles, they are almost a lock to be bounced in round 1, unless they get multiple defensive scores.

I wonder if they cut Eli, they are unlikely to be able to trade him in the offseason, and they would sorta be doing him a favor and allowing him to catch on with a relevant team. Jags? Texans? Bills? Though I doubt he's an upgrade from Taylor, that coaching staff doesn't seem to value him. 

As for next year, Denver stands out as an interesting fit for several reasons, unless they go full rebuild. Buffalo makes sense. Maybe Arizona if Palmer retires?

Definitely the worst (and only) QB you've ever had that got you two world titles. I'll give you that.  And, don't get me wrong. I am not an Eli fan. I don't even think he should be in the HOF based on some of his career BUT, had it not been for him, there are no two titles and the New England Patriots would be in the Boston Celtic category of titles/lore.  

I can join you in bashing him for lots of things. Hand me a mallet. But, I can't say he's the worst thing you've ever had.

He won 2 super bowls, good for him. Peyton was better. Eli was an above average QB who had some success at his job, that's great. He's a big baby when it comes down to it

I couldn't care less about who is playing QB for the NYG. I'm sure it's an emotional time but he made this decision. If he started the game and played out of his mind do you think he'd be benched? I don't. But maybe. Wow, didn't see a Geno start coming.  Just saw Eli's remarks, which, to me, sounded classy and not bitter. Said starting the game knowing he wouldn't finish would tarnish the streak. (And I always thought he was a baby for getting daddy to get him to the giants; still feel for him now)

I certainly like Eli's approach to the streak better than Favre's.  He is saying it the correct way, anyway.

I get your point but when the other starting QB in NY is Josh mccown, the argument loses a little gusto. 

You're right that he's been remarkably average, but even more inconsistent than plain average.  But he's still been a top 20 QB for most of 14 years, sometimes getting into the top 6ish. 

Not ELIte, but still a franchise QB for a long time. Let's give him credit for that, even if we don't think he's earned the fame his name provides.

I agree.  We've seen what Geno is or isn't at this point. It is a waste of time, IMO. But..the NFL is known as the world's greatest recycler of players and coaches on the planet. There are coordinators that have been amazingly hired and fired 6-10 times form the same position and keep latching on.  It is incredible. The only justification I would give for Geno over Webb at this point is if the coaches know Webb isn't ready and needs a week. But if that's the case, then the have their answer and don't know how to read it. He's a pro football player. he should be ready to play right now.

I don't feel bad for him.  However, dude deserves some level of respect for not wanting to tarnish the streak knowing he will be pulled from the game.  I'm shocked TBH that this isn't a universal feeling.

true.  Kind of funny to see McAdoo say "i have to do what's best for the franchise". If he did that, he would resign.  Again, not being the apologist but Eli has been sacked because he has no line. they have no running game. The lost their top wRs (plural).  What can you do?

I did not see it as that clearly stated. 

I am pretty sure I read somewhere about Eli getting the start and then (paraphrasing) the other QBs getting rotated in to evaluate them. To me that says,
Coach: hey we've clearly got a sinking ship so we'd like to start you, play you for a quarter or two, and then the plan would be to work the other QBs in to give them some work. 
Eli: No thanks coach, if I won't play the entire game I just won't play

Seems I was mistaken. If the plan wasn't to play this out like a preseason game (each QB gets a quarter so to speak), then fine. If it's a similar situation to Favre taking a fall for Strahan, then yeah, let the record be what it is, no need to pad the stats. Good for him not caring about records. I saw that quote from a different perspective; "play me the whole game or don't play me at all." Kind of selfish way. I saw this as him taking his ball and going home because he wasn't going to be the starter. Obviously I was in the minority and wrong on this. If it was (and seems to be), get the start or even the first series then you're out, then yes I'd agree that's as self-less as it gets in the NFL these days- hard to find

I don't watch press conferences, and I'm not privy to his locker room speeches. So yeah, like, you got me there, like, I guess.  

His apathetic behavior in games, sidelines when most QBs would show emotion reminds me a lot of Jay Cutler. That with his draft day fit lead me to approach many he says from a me-first mentality. Nice to see over the last decade or so he's grown up a bit. As I've said, I am clearly wrong in my interpretation. If we want to talk about my mistake we can, I just figure when someone admits they read something wrong that's usually the end of it. But I will gladly repeat it a few more times for folks!   I read it the wrong way, clearly.
