I want to start hearing the excuses... (1 Viewer)

1. Chicago played a great defensive game at home.

2. Uhrlacher returned, so this is not the same as last year's Bear's defense.

3. The Bears played their safeties in, and Detroit did not try to stretch the field for the first 3 quarters.

Sorry, no excuses.

Best will obviously only average 1.4 yards per carry all year. He'll be out of football by week 12.

Barry Sanders could have done better.

when you have briggs urlacher harris and peppers in your front seven your going to stop the run. the guy was literally getting pummeled as soon as he touched the ball... although i will say the line doesnt look to be doing to well.

It is one game though no career is made or lost out of it. I don't like nobody comparing this guy to Barry Sanders though. I think he will be good. Those that started him at least got good points out of him. He does have nice jukes moves he needs a little more space to be effective. I watched pretty much the whole game and I admit he didn't break many tackles.

lots of people have been making those comparisons.

Bears played great D, the Lions ran a really conservative gameplan due to terrible field position and losing Stafford.

First no one ever said that Best is a grinder or tackle breaker. He is a home run threat plain and simple. Get in the open an GO. His two TD's made him a good play this week. But, I wonder when Jones comes back if he take those short TD's away from Best

Best is a feast or bust RB, just hope for the home runs.

against the 23rd ranked run defense last year..it's only one game but Kevin Smith could have done betterLet me have it
Larry Fitzgerald... only 3 catches on 15 targets against the 25th ranked pass defense from last year... Let me have it!Michael Crabtree... only 2 catches for 12 yards against the 30th ranked pass defense from last year... Let me have it!Jermichael Finley... only 4 catches and not even 50 yards against... well... against anybody!... Let me have it!

Didn't Kevin Smith have a similar stat line @ the Bears last year?

Even if Best has a season like Smith's in 2008, I think there is nothing to worry about here. But we know Best is at least a little better.

Two years ago Chris Johnson had 8 yards on 14 carries at Chicago. He's not CJ nor is this the same Chicago Defense, but it's not the end of the world. Good Lord, dude had 20 pts and helped carry me to victory in 2 PPR leagues today.

I'm not estatic, but I'm content. If his lack of production in terms of YPC and total yardage continues next week I'll worry.

Are you just ticked that your dreadful group of dynasty RB's (RB: Jerome Harrison CLE, C J Spiller BUF, Leon Washington SEA, Donald Brown IND, Montario Hardesty CLE, Kevin Smith DET) produced absolutely nothing today?

Oh what do you know, a Kevin Smith owner......

lol... watch the game then come talk to me bud
Honestly, I think the people defending Best with the "he's on the Lions" and the "the Chicago defense played out of their minds" stuff are the ones that needed to watch the games. Best had a chance to get by a linebacker in open space one on one multiple times and never even got close to it. He went down way too easy.Obviously it's just one game and it really means very little going forward, as everyone has bad games. But let's stop trying to blame everyone else here. Best himself did not look good at all today.

I ROFLCOPTERed at this thread.

You'll never hear me complaining when a player gets 2 TD's. It's been covered but Chicago was amazing today.

...so your saying jahvid best isnt a good talent? he was getting tackled as soon as he touched the ball...im not saying that is going to change or anything but i watched every snap and he looked as advertised in space.

best looked hesitant often but he also didn't get a lot of help from his oline .... the lions offense as a sleeper offense seems to be a little iffy but their D-line caused havoc (Suh making instant impact)

How about this excuse: everyone has tough games.

Remember Adrian Peterson's rookie season? You know, the season he won ORoY, made the pro bowl, led the league in yards per game, and set the single-game rushing record? Sure you do. Remember the game that season when he had 14 carries for 3 yards against a defense that finished the year ranked 22nd against the run? Yeah, I bet a lot of you forgot about that one.

If Adrian Peterson can have a 14/3/0 game against a below-average run defense, then surely Jahvid Best can be excused a 14/20/2 game against what looks to be a pretty solid run D.

You have to admit though that at least for this season some of the hyperbole should be tempered. That o-line alone should be enough to start to question will he be a monster. His value is coming back to the mean a bit.

You can't establish value in one week. Especially when the starting QB gets hurt and misses the whole 2nd half.

Last season, Chris Johnson had about 50 yards in week one. No indication from that week that he was about to explode.

Yeah, I guess he could have had a better week one...but it's always good to have a little patience and a longer sample size than one week.

That being said, his value has to take a huge hit for the next month or two with Shaun Hill as the QB. Hill looked dreadful, so Best will get tons of attention from opposing defenses.

I watched that whole game and Best was pretty much greeted by Bear defenders as soon as he got the ball on most carries. I didn't see much of the speed he's known for, but he rarely had the ball in space.

Have you heard of the HOF player named Brian Urlacher? Add another HOF player named Julius Peppers and it is not that difficult
This. The Bears defense has two absolute centerpiece guys on the line and with Briggs and Urlacher behind them, they'll be a really tough matchup for a lot of teams. The Lions don't have the guys up front to deal with them and have tremendous success, and you can't outrun the Bear linebackers. I expected Best to provide more on the ground, but I was concerned about Briggs and Urlacher negating him in the receiving game. I'd actually expect more success against Philly man pressure unless Hill completely implodes.

His next carry would have been a 90 yard touchdown.
Perhaps this was written in jest, but I honestly believe that there's some truth to it. This is why you own the guy. Because maybe in the very next carry he's going to break one.
This is what suprised me. He didn't seem to have much of that "it" that the speed back/quick backs are known for. Sproles is like a pinball - same with CJ. Best didn't seem to have that yesterday. I mean sure, he had a couple of nice runs with some good moves. But that's the concern. "Good" moves - every RB in the NFL has good moves - when your undersized like Best you need to have great, break-their-ankles moves, especially with as easily as Best seem to go down on virtually any contact.I'm not saying it's time to panic or bail - just that his seeming inability to escape much should be watched for now. He might have just been a little nervous/tentative. He may be fine and look more Sproles-like once he gets a few games under his belt.

And as has been mentioned already, Urlacher is one of the faster LBs in the league, so not being able to make him miss doesn't <> cant make people miss.

Best looked good on exactly 2 plays - his td runs. They were also the only two times he had decent run blocking

Other than that, nothing. They were both his longest runs. Take them out and his average was below 1 yard per carry.

Play calling was atrocious - they went downfield twice in the first half? Which led to...

Bears got to play up and dominated in the box. Not just Urlacher, but Briggs had one great game, including tackling Best in the open field twice I believe.

this could be Best's best game of the year unless Stafford comes back and detroit changes their offensive play calling.

One positive prediction...BMW is the biggest story all year long in the NFL goes for 1200+ yds 12 TDS and 85-95 catches. Top 5 WR.

One Negative prediction..J Best turns out to be a MAJOR bust. 500 yds rushing 150 Receiving, and 2 TDs only plays 10 games. and the Lions still stink badly. Lions win one game. Most people on this forum get their heads examined for ever comparing him to Barry Sanders.

Get back with me after he gets 40 yards rushing against the Bears. The Bears are NOT a good football team but even they will handle him....

Really...He got 20 yards and 16 recieving...A COMBINED 36 yards!!!!!!!!!!! I know others will point out the 2 TDs. The TDs were just a case of opportunity. ANYBODY could have gotten those...20 yards!! I love being right. BTW I am sticking by my totals including TDs!! I doubt he sees the endzone ever again this season!!!

Here's what I posted yesterday...Looks like there is only one Barry Sanders... Some guys named Moonlight disagreed He needs to eat crow.....eat it eat it...

Best = Bust
Lions = bsut. The Lions Oline is the problem here guys, Chicago dared them to run gainst 7 man fronts all day long and couldnt. 2tds are nice but the Kids cant get anything going with that Oline. The Lions are a work in Progress. Looks the the super hype guy to have is Foster not Best

:goodposting: Best ran over Brian Urlacher on the second touchdown. You try it.PS: Apparently Matt Forte is not anybody.

This puzzles me as the conventional shark pool wisdom is that CJ keeps you from putting 8 in the box and someone like Best keeps the D honest insofar as covering CJ.So how did Chicago manage to contain both of them without Schwartz, who last year we learned is a genius, making them pay?

Beats me. The Lions refused to stretch the field. I don't recall Johnson even being targeted more than once in the first half. Even the broadcasters commented about it. I think you're right that Megatron and Best are supposed to be complimentary to each other: CJ prevents you from keeping your safeties in, while Best prevents you from sending them back too far. The Bears made a choice yesterday: they elected to let Stafford beat them with Megatron, and he either couldn't or wouldn't. This is the one thing that concerns me about Best in the future, because other teams are just going to do the same thing until the Lions figure it out.
