[icon]'s whiskey flipping thread (1 Viewer)

I am 32 and I only have one friend of many who actually drinks any alcohol "straight" (he's a scotch guy).
I am about the same age...A couple years ago, I was "on the rocks" all the time, then it progressed to "on the rocks... in the summer" and I'd just hit it with water in the winter. Now I usually hit the higher proof ones with water and drink the lower proof ones neat. For whatever it is worth, I have a hell of a time getting a drink the way I like it in a bar without it costing two arms and a leg.
Yeah, that's the thing. Seems like anymore unless I order a double of my mixed drink (CC and diet coke/club soda, or Sapphire and club) I'm not satisfied, but it leads to a hell of a bar tab.

I'm 40...and when I drink Bourbon on at a bar, I specifically request it with one ice cube, on advice from this thread. The last time I did that, the bartender replied "######' A right."

That's usually the response. Bartenders love a serious drinker.

Anyone tried any of the following canadian whiskeys:

Pendleton

Tangle Ridge

Forty Creek

Canadian Club Sherry Cask

As you can see, I've got some Pappy 15 yr, Four Roses Single Barrel, and some Buffalo Trace. The Pappy blows anything else I've ever tried away and it's really not even close. Seriously, it is fantastic. The color, the smell, the taste, and most surprisingly the long-lasting after taste that is out of this world. Its got this caramelly thickness to it that is astounding and which accounts for the after taste - at 107 proof it's quite strong too. After trying the Pappy the Four Roses and Buffalo Trace both taste like garbage. I'm going to try to stock pile as much as I can.

ok - well since i got ZERO responses, I went ahead and bought a bottle of all four of them.I'll be reviewing 5 Canadian Whiskeys here.. Canadian Club Classic 12 and the four aforementioned.I opened the Canadian Club 12 last week... I thought it was definitely a better version of Canadian Club. I tried it with a couple ice cubes and thought it was good, but with some Sprite Zero it was excellent. However, given that the bottle of CC Classic was $19 what I'd pay for a handle of regular CC at Costco.. i'll take the cheaper stuff and get more than twice as much.I opened the CC Sherry Cask on Saturday night. I also tried it with just 2 ice cubes. This was excellent. Very drinkable, good taste, a tad sweet which was nice - no harsh finish. I will buy this again. The price of this bottle was $25 and I thought it was good value.Next up will be the Forty Creek.

Anyone else vary ice / no ice depending on brand. I'm a big Woodford, Bookers and Blanton fan with no ice (to me, can't stand them with ice). Yet, Basil Haydens, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and Bulleit taste below average without ice. And it's different than scotch, where a little cool water or melting ice can really bring out different flavor. The flavor change seems much more limited yet makes a big diffence to me (either better or worse).

Woodford is my go to bourbon. The price point for me is perfect.
I rarely do anything more than a splash of water.
can i ask what age range you are in?

I am 32 and I only have one friend of many who actually drinks any alcohol "straight" (he's a scotch guy).

Over time many of my close friends have moved from cheap beer to good beer, foo-foo-ish drinks down to drinks like just bourbon or whiskey and cola or in some cases things like gin/vodka and just club soda.

But no one drinks stuff "neat" or with a splash of water, or even "on the rocks"

Is that something you "get to" later in life or what.

I can't currently tolerate it and i've tried with what is perceived to be good alcohols.

I'd just rather have a mixed drink
I'm 44 now, and this is something I got to in my thirties.I guess the best way I can put it is the change occured when overall, it became less about the drinking, and more about the drink. It's when I started to sit out on my deck by myself and look at the sky and think about life and such - sipping a nice whiskey just really "fit", and I fell in love with the stuff. Cigars, too - they go together quite well.

It's funny - these are things I developed a "taste" for on my own, really. If my drinking was just social / with friends (where it's more about the drinking), I'd likely have never ventured further than maybe a mixed drink.

I'm on bottle two.Buffalo Trace > Maker's MarkNext, I'll try Bulleit.
My thinking as well. The main reason I didn't like Bulleit is its high Rye content.I await your input.
I really enjoyed the Bulleit, and I plan on taking a bottle to the ranch for hunting season. Seem appropriate. However, it's still Buffalo Trace by a neck, Bulleit to place and Maker's Mark to show. I'll probably try another after Thanksgiving.

I think I'm going to have to give it up. :( :sadbanana:
I've reconsidered. I'm sorry, but you are not allowed to quit.
I'm not happy about it and it is 100% my decision. Mrs. SLB hasn't even mentioned it to me but of course I have some nice life insurance.I almost drink whiskey exclusively and my blood work came back not so good. Not alarming but definitely down the wrong path. I'm going to cut down significantly on the hard stuff. Like 100% for a while. Two weekends ago I drank a 1.75 liter of JD by myself. That isn't all that unusual. :pickle:

holy crap.. a handle of JD by yourself in a single weekend?I've had the same handle of Sapphire Gin since 2007I do probably buy about 10 handles of CC over the course of the year, but it's split amongst a few friends, my wife, and myself. As for your blood work - are you talking cholesterol or something different.. or that AND other things

Yeah, I know. I just drink it way to fast. That's the really big bottle too.

My liver enzymes were elevated and it wouldn't freak my out but I didn't have a drink for 5 days before I gave blood.

However, it wasn't crazy high and I also take Lipitor which will make them higher. Plus, if you were following in GM's thread, I have this bulging disc in my neck so I was taking a crap load of pain killers (Perocet, Vicodin, Ultram) plus Aleve like they were candy. So I know that didn't help. PLUS getting 4 shots of Demerol and Cortizone in my spine. I'm not sure if that had any effect or not but it couldn't help. I also wasn't exercising because it was too painful. So going from walking 4-5.5 miles every day to nothing probably hurt too.

I'm getting blood drawn again in three months so I think I'm just going to cut WAY back on the hard stuff until then.

Of course, we'll see. :lmao:

wow, that's a lot of crap going down.

getting old sucks I guess.

Got a bottle of Makers Mark 46 for my birthday. It was pretty good, smoother and less sweet than normal makers, I'm not sure of the cost so I can't say if it was worth the money. I need to try some of the bottles in this thread. For my money, Elijah Craig 12 year is very solid. Its about the same cost as JD around here and much easier to drink on the rocks. The 18 year is very good also but not worth the money IMO.

Washington State voted down privatizing liquor sales in favor of our current state-run liquor stores. They're closed on Sundays and close at 7 the other 6 days a week. Not to mention that the liquor is 33% more than California or Oregon.

Way to go, Washington voters!

AT home I drink "on a rock". One cube, but it is a huge cube. I have an ice tray from Hennesy that makes giant round ice rocks. They fit perfectly in a "neat style" glass and the rock lasts about three rounds. Love that tray. At the bar I go ful rocks. If I drink them the light ice or neat I drink them too fast which gets me too drunk and too poor when its the good stuff. And it has to be the good stuff.

Tried my first bottle of Bulleit after reading about it here. Really enjoying it so far. I would not make it my Go to whiskey, but do like the slightly unique flavors. Maybe it's the rye; didn't know it had a higher content. As with all better brands I drink it with a small amount of cold water added.

Anyone tried any of the following canadian whiskeys:PendletonTangle RidgeForty CreekCanadian Club Sherry Cask
1) CC sherry Cask - really liked this - a little sweeter than regular CC (sherry influence)2) forty creek - extremely smooth - not a ton of flavor - would like to try their portwood reserve3) pendleton - sweet - almost too sweet - good mixer, bad on the rocks.4) tangle ridge - very traditional canadian whiskey - good.got a bottle of eagle rare - changed the way i think about bourbon - very smooth, very light, very good flavor - best bourbon i've had.buffalo trace is great too

let me revise my positions now that i've finished the bottles1) CC sherry cask - by the end of the bottle I didn't want it anymore.. in fact I won't buy it again. I used the last 3rd for mixing.... with sprite it was great, but it's too expensive to use for that.2) forty creek - great! cheap enough to be a good mixing whiskey and it will be a goto for me. Better than crown in my book.3) pendleton - terrible - too sweet, too weird - never again.4) tangle ridge - nice flavor - not as smooth as forty creek, but a nice traditional flavor. Close ranking to forty creek.Bourbon reviews:eagle rare 10 - outstandingWoodford Reserve - nice, but when it's the same price as eagle rare it's not comparable.. eagle is better in every way.Evan Williams single barrell 2000 - this was supposed to be a real gem of a whisky... to me it's too "sour mash" and was still inferior to eagle rare. I have a few new bottles coming up:Wiser's ReserveWiser's 18

GREAT posting.

I worked my last few years in college at a liquor store and I tried everything. Settled on Crown as my drink of choice and enjoyed it for the next 20 years. A little over a month ago I finally found a Canadian Whiskey I thought hands down beat Crown. Forty Creek Whiskey and it costs about the same as Crown. I drink it over ice and I never knew whiskey could taste this good and smooth.
Yes, Forty Creek is better than Crown or CC as far as Canadian whiskey goes.

Also, I got very drunk on Crown last night at my brother's house, then went down to local ####ty bar that only had ####ty bar whiskey (assuming it was Seagram's VO), I almost instantly had to switch to beer, how can bars not have at least something beyond the standard mixing stuff?

Wife bought me some Forty Creek for Christmas. I had never heard of it, but it's pretty damn good

Just poured myself a nice Macallan 15 on some rocks. Delicious. Got a 17 in reserve as well, some JW Green, a small bit of JW Blue (for special occasions only), some Laphroaig, and a few others. But the Macallan is my daily drinker.

is the 15 significantly better than the 12?i can get macallan 12 at costco for $40.. i see it at liquor stores for $50... so i figure that's some major +EV

GB Jack Daniels Single Barrel.
my father in law drinks jack.. he also had some gentlemen's jack around that he said was a "little better"i bought him a bottle of single barrel for christmas.I think he really tasted a big difference... and respected it by just putting it with a little ice.I tasted some - i'd still never buy a bottle for myself because i still don't enjoy the jack taste... BUT it was LOADS better than old #7 and didn't make me cringe like that does.anyone ever had the green label jack? what is that about

We are still already better than WA, and I didn't think that any other state could be worse (besides UT).The new gov is going to fix all that anyway.

The 12 is my usual drinker -- just happen to have some bettr stud stocked these days. 40 bucks for the 12 is a great deal -- you should keep stocking that, but also pick up the 15 and 17 at some point and give em a shot. They're each a little different, but I'm not expert enough to be able to tell you if they are that much better or worse.

Macallan 18, and it's around $150 a bottle. You should never have to pay $50 for the 12 yr old. That's too high.

where do you guys get your rare stuff?

the liquor stores around here suck... and sure they'll order it for you... but you'll pay top dollar

any recommended online stores?

can you even buy liquor online?

Balcones Baby Blue, 92 proof. I'm told this is the first whiskey made in Texas since Reconstruction. Made from blue corn and aged in oak casks, it's somewhere between bourbon and moonshine. Good stuff.

I'm relatively new to drinking whiskey. In the past 6 months, I've purchased two bottles of what I think most would consider decent mid-ranged whiskeys - one bourbon (Woodford Reserve) and one scotch (Aberlour 12).

I know there are huge variations in each category, but I have found based on drinking these two (on the rocks), that I MUCH prefer scotch to bourbon.

That is all.

My understanding, and I am no expert on JD, is that the Green Label is the stuff that doesn't end up fitting the flavor profile for the Black Label.

Awesome for those hard to get bourbons

First-time poster here...I've been drinking a bit more whiskey these days, and would like to drink more in the next year while subsequently cutting down on beer slightly.

I have really no idea what I like and what I don't like. In the past few months, I've come into the following whiskeys either as gifts or purchases - Glenfidditch 15 Year, Booker's, and Bushmills 16 Year. For the Bushmills, apparently it's tough to find in America, per my boss (I have no idea if that's true), and he wanted me to pick it up for him on my trip to Ireland...so I bought myself a bottle too. ETA - yes, I know, all over the board here...but I've enjoyed them all.

I guess my question is...where do I go from here? What are some quality, reasonably-priced whiskeys to try? I spend quite a bit of money on beer - too much, probably - so I don't mind paying for the good stuff. Obviously, though, I can't afford to be drinking the high high end stuff every day.

Also, I liked the 1 ice cube suggestion. I used to always drink straight or over ice, but I've always worried about putting too much ice in it. 1 ice cubs worked very nicely, really changed the flavor of the Bushmills that I was drinking the other night.

TIA...

2) Woodford Reserve

3) Buffalo Trace

4) Maker's 46

5) Maker's Mark

6) Eagle Rare

7) Ridgemont Reserve

8) Bulleit

9) Four Roses

I had the bottle of Maker's 46 at a Daytona 500 party. I didn't INTEND to drink the whole thing...but then a couple buddies got involved. Goodbye, Maker's 46. Good stuff...but not tremendously better than plain 'ol Maker's for an extra $8.

Fast forward to tonight...did you know that liquor stores have clearance sales? Well...mine did. The wife and I stocked up. Picked up a bottle of Baker's for $24, and a bottle of Four Roses for $12 (it's normally around $18 per bottle). I'm feeling a little off tonight, so I decided to open the Four Roses first and have a bit over an ice cube.

It's...not that enjoyable. Kinda harsh, and seems high in rye content. It just kinda tastes...dirty. It will spend the rest of it's existence as a mixer.

Up next...Baker's. I keep staring at it, so I'm going to hide it behind the rest of the bottles that my wife bought. Otherwise, I might take a crack at it tonight.
