If I Microwave a Hot Dog, How Long Is It Good? (2 Viewers)

Our son is a ridiculously picky eater.  He's going to summer camp and at least twice a week he has to pack a lunch that can't be refrigerated nor heated up.  It has to be completely disposable, so no cold packs, either.

His favorite food is hot dogs.  If we microwave a hot dog in the morning and put it in a sandwich bag, would the preservatives keep the hot dog healthy for 4-5 hours?  Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

You could try it first to see how it works.   Its a hot dog, it probably won't hurt him, but I am thinking that it also might not be a culinary masterpiece. Good luck!

Don't think length has anything to do with it.  The whole length of the hotdog should be good (or not, depending on your taste for microwaved dogs).  If it's a 6 inch dog, should be good for 6 inches.

More serious answer... will it be kept in a relatively cool place, or out in 85 degree heat?

My guess is a dog would last a good long while once cooked, even in somewhat warm conditions.  Condiments, well, YMMV

fwiw, ccc... the wife routinely puts pre-cooked hot-dogs into floppinha's lunch (cut up into bite-sized pieces). but she also puts a freezer pack in there too, so it's being extra-preserved.

I think you could probably put hotdogs in a ziploc bag under your carseat, then come back 2 months later and they'd still be edible. They're loaded with preservatives.

In my younger years I've had hotdogs that have sat out on a counter platter for far longer than 4-5 hours at summer cookouts....

IMO it's a non-issue.

This.  Macaroni Salad? Notta so much.  Dogs (or most any protein, even if not that preservative laiden), should be fine for almost a day (not that I'd want to push it beyond 8-10 hours mind you)

I'm checking out disposable freezer packs.  That might be the way to go.

fwiw- the kids have lunchboxes... the freezer pack goes in them and comes home. not-disposable. I suppose you could freeze some water in ziplocks and throw those away if the kid is going to a camp that doesn't allow lunch-boxes.

That's the issue.  On certain days, they have to bring lunches that can be entirely tossed away.

Most hot dogs are pre-cooked so I'm not sure microwaving it in the morning makes sense if you are going to leave it in a bag for several hours.  You are probably better off leaving a fully precooked hot dog frozen and putting that in a separate zip lock bag than the bun--and have him "assemble" his room temperature hot dog at lunch time (assuming that it's not more than 4-5 hours after you pack it).

Hmmm...frozen and letting it thaw.  Never considered that.  Thats an interesting idea.  Thanks!

Nailed it imo

My daughter used to take a microwaved hot dog with her for lunches sometimes. Zap it and then wrap it in foil. Throw the bun in a sandwich bag (or non-sandwich "bun" bag if you prefer) then assemble and add condiments at school. Lunch for her was ~4 hours after microwaving. Never had any issues.

Good advice here.  Thank you

It's like lunch meat. Microwave it the night before and put it in the fridge.  It'll end up lukewarm just like lunchmeat at the appropriate time.

It's not great, but just like a bologna sandwich.

I eat dogs right out of the pack out of the refrigerator yum

In the early days of the interwebs, some guy did an experiment. He put various kinds of meat, including hamburger, bacon, chicken, hot dogs etc. on a plate. Then he left them in a neighbor's yard and tracked the progress over days, and then weeks. The weeks part was because of the hot dogs, they never changed. Ever.

Edible probably but not healthy.

Put whatever will last the longest in there.  If your kid gets hungry, he will eat whatever was packed...if not, then he wasn't hungry enough.  All is good.

The three seems to be leaning towards a refrigerated hot dog being ok at lunch, although.i liked the aluminum foil wrap idea, too.  Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

What's the worst that happens?  E. Coli?

With a hot dog he should be fine. Worst realistic scenario he poops a lot, has an upset stomach, and feels like crap for a few days.

Just put some matches in with the uncooked hot dog.  Provide instructions for how long he needs to hold the hot dog above the flame before eating.  Make sure to uniformly heat it up...don't just focus on one spot and expect the whole thing to get up to temp.  Rookie mistake.  4-5 matches should be sufficient, although adding more just in case it's windy or he misfires due to stress of hunger would be smart.

Hot dogs are already cooked.  No need to nuke or keep cold. Throw it in a sandwich bag and tell the little turd* to eat it and be happy.

*I'm just assuming you sired a turd. :bye:

Also, always recook hot dogs, even if they come precooked.   Every time.  There's a pretty reasonable chance of bacteria contamination at the factory.

Not to say I've never had a raw dog™, but I'm with you on almost always cooking them before eating. Grilling > Boiling > Microwaving.
