I’m heading there end of March for what was supposed to be Motley Crue, which has since been postponed. Still gonna go. I was able to get a couple free nights at Venetian which is rare for me, so going to still go anyway. Will be curious how dead it is….i think spring breaks starting next week will pump some life into it….

Staying at the Tuscany Suites - pretty reasonable rate and it's 0.7 miles away from The Sphere, so we can walk there and back and not have to fight for a taxi or walk far after the concert.
Have a blast, but take crossing those streets seriously, even if you're wasted. Two people a week are run over and killed there. You try to moonwalk across Flamingo, you're getting smoked.
Truth. I just walked from the convention center to the Elara going the back way. Tuscany side is not too bad, but large part of that other side is dirt/gravel. Cars were sorta flying. You’re very close to the Sphere though

Interesting.

I was there 2 weeks ago for the week and thought it was a little slow. But not totally dead. But it was for a conference.
I feel like they're learning the hard way that you can't squeeze customers forever without consequences. The ridiculous resort fees, way overpriced food and drinks, even money blackjack, triple zero roulette, super tight slots, etc, make people feel like they’re constantly being ripped off. We used to go a few times a year back when they actually tried to entice you with reasonable prices and comps so you’d gamble all night. You would feel like you had a shot to leave town a winner. Now, you're already so far in the hole before you even place a bet that you'd need some crazy luck just to break even. Charging $10 for a bottle of water? That kind of stuff makes me not want to come back. Why treat people like that?

yeah, the Vegas gambling experience has definitely gone way downhill and eventually they will need to course correct. The food and entertainment are significantly better than 20 years ago IMHO so it's not all bad.

It's just changing.

Also @General Malaise if you're going for the Eagles concert, you'll be youngest guy there by 20 years based on what I could tell from people I talked to. ;)

:lmao:

Well, the GOOD news is that I have floor seats and because of the demographic, all floor guests are required to sit for their show. Which, I'm TOTALLY fine with!

My childhood friend is their newest guitar player (well, he took over for Stueart Smith) and he's my age too, so there will be at least three dudes in their early 50s at this one. I cannot wait!

This is one of the main reasons I quit going. It's TOO expensive to just.....be there. Grab breakfast at a random casino? $75! Want a giant beer to walk down the strip? $15.99 for a Bud! ONE TALL BUD. Like, you're already taking my money, why do you have to be so aggressive about it?

Were it not for the fact that my buddy is playing there, I would have lived the balance of my life never setting foot in Vegas.

I wish that were the case, but even though anecdotally it seems "dead," in 2024 Vegas saw in increase in visitors, and 2024 Nevada hit its highest gaming revenue ever. The Strip was down slightly... like 1%... but overall gaming revenue continues to increase and visitors continue to come. If there's a breaking point I don't think we've hit it yet.

As much as I love Vegas and still think it's the most fun you'll have on vacation, your point is well taken. Prices are getting ridiculous (though resort prices are still a great value).

They're public companies and they have to keep showing an increase in profits and growth year over year. Eventually you hit a point of diminishing returns on pure number of people you can increase to keep those growth numbers growing, and then they have to increase margins instead with higher prices, more favorable (to the house) odds, etc.

What we need are the numbers to dwindle enough that customer retention becomes a priority again, and these places have to start competing against each other with 3:2 blackjack etc just to try and desperately claw in a share of a limited customer base.

Sadly, as @Softballguy pointed out, we're probably not there yet.

Right now Vegas is stuck in the same spot as concerts and skiing and streaming and everything else. Everyone just yells "the prices etc have gotten ridiculous this is so absurd!!!!", and then they buy it anyway.

Agreed. But it does feel like there is SOME point where people stop. Right?
There are various points at which some people stop. Some it appears already have. There are still bargains to be had, they are just fewer and far between. I love Vegas too much to stop going. Luckily I’m in a boat where $100 show tickets or a $200 dinner is ok on vacation. Comps can be had at a park mgm level property without a ton of play. As noted above, the $8 waters or $30 drinks bother me more than anything else, just because of the principle of it.

It was from a weekly Vegas podcast I listen to (I'm sure they got it from the RJ, but here's a similar article). Profits may be down, I'm not sure about that... My point was just that I don't think we're quite at a breaking point yet as attendance and gaming revenue continue to rise. I hope I'm incorrect though... my past few Vegas tripped destroyed my bank account.

Haven't been to Vegas since 2005 but going there in two weeks to see The Eagles at The Sphere. At this stage of life, I'm far more about convenience and reducing aggravation than I am being at the coolest property on the strip or seeing the coolest attractions (well, other than the Sphere, I guess).

I don't really care about pools either - just want a good spot where I can watch and bet on college hoops, drink beer and play some blackjack here and there.
I'd head over to Ellis Island to play for cheap and watch at the restaurant on the side or over to Westgate to see games in a big traditional sports book. You could walk to either one, but EI is like down the block from you.

Screw the strip.

A group of us go to Vegas annually for a draft. We spend A LOT of that time watching and betting on NFL games, along with some craps, blackjack, etc. We're not going to stop going somewhere to do that, and with the increase in availability of gambling in other states, we could go most anywhere and do most of the same things. But what are we gonna do, head to the Hollywood Casino in Toledo and take in the games at the local TGI Friday's? So, we keep going despite hating most of the changes we've seen in the last 15ish years.

(I welcome all recommendations for real alternatives that will allow for all the same activities in comparable atmospheres and for comparable prices)

Not sure what college hoops watching is like there, but we drink copious amounts with decent food at The Front Yard while watching the college football games all day long and inevitably leave with our cheapest tab of the weekend every time. Crazy cheap comparably speaking. And when you want the distraction provided by cheap craps and blackjack, the EI casino is right there for the taking.

Thanks GB! That's good Intel. I wasn't planning on straying too far from Tuscany but if it sucks, I'll take your suggestions and explore around. I have zero interest in the Strip.

I'm considering going to Vegas next week for a couple nights. From Ohio, round trip flight 160 bucks. There's some super cheap hotels (Excalibur is 150 for 2 nights with all fees included).
Hmmmm

I'm ALL-IN for a GREAT, expensive meal. All-in for a pricey tickets to a great show. That's why I'm there! Just don't charge me $31.95 for a Denny's level two eggs & toast and bacon breakfast. Don't charge me $44 for a vodka soda + a Guinness. Don't rape me on the room. Don't rape me on the extra fees. When I get black jack pay me 3:2. etc

Vegas is more than just the strip. The problem is that most people that go to Vegas for a few days just stay within the confines of the strip. Vegas can be done affordably by getting a rental car and planning things out. If somebody really wanted to save money—they can get a cheap room in downtown at a place like Four Queens. The rooms there all have mini fridges—so you go to the ABC store on Fremont street and get some of your favorite spirts and load up the mini fridge. You rent a car—and even if you want to spend your days on the strip—you go to the Sahara where parking is free and you buy monorail passes they go for $13-15 per day—and you have access to the westgate, the convention center, to center strip, and you can take it all the way down to MGM. From the MGM—you can take a pedestrian bridge over to the Excalibur—where there is a free tram that goes to luxur or Mandalay Bay. Effectively—one can save money on boos and a room by staying in the economic friendly Fremont Street—and by renting a car and getting a monorail ticket—get full access to the entire strip. Having a car will also allow you the ability to not get price gouged on meals on the strip. For example—the Station casinos (like palace station), the south point all have great dining specials. There are also lots of great restaurants and casinos off of the strip that having a vehicle gives you the freedom to visit. Last time I was in vegas, i drove down to Boulder City—about a 40 minute drive—and I absolutely fell in love. It’s such a cool old town with massive character. They have this old Main Street with antique shops, diners, bars that was rad to just walk down and hang out in. If you go to Vegas and just stay on the strip—you are almost guaranteed to feel ripped off—and after 2-3 days—you’ll want to go back home. If you get a car when you go to Vegas—you can stay there for 5 nights and still feel like you could have stayed for several more.

Yup. Ellis Island has been one of my favorite Vegas spots for 20+ years.

Stayed at 4 Queens like 6 months ago. It was LOUD! Only like 1/3rd of the rooms are quiet enough to sleep IMO. Otherwise, I liked the place. I'd stay at a quieter downtown hotel any time over the strip.

For what I was talking about from Shaan Puri:

I saw this and decided to look into it. Turns out, Vegas publishes a huge financial report of how all the casinos are doing (as a group). All their revenue, expenses etc.. (you can see it here)

Some fun findings:
  • The Vegas strip made $21B in revenue (hotels, food, drinks, gambling, shows), up 7%
  • Net income was $820M, down 40% (!) vs. the prior year
  • Slots make up 60% of all gambling revenue
  • The casino is a 94% gross margin business hahaha

Any thoughts on Lawry's The Prime Rib? Close to the Tuscany. Seems like a nice higher end spot for red meat and such. I can get reservations.

Tried to get a table for 2 to Herbs & Rye and the internet went "lolooloooloo" back at me.

It's been a while but I remember it as fine.

If I'm doing the higher end steak house in Las Vegas, Joe's Stone Crab in Ceasar's is my go to. Partly just for familiarity but the food is always spot on and the service is consistently outstanding.

Yeah, kinda worried about the "it's fine" tag when better is out there. I'll see what else I can come up with from recs here - can always cancel the reservation if something better and available is unearthed here.

Nothing available Sat Mar 15 prior to the Eagles' show.....looks like the early birds gobbled up all the worms. :shakes angry fist at people 20 years older than me:

Whats the hike like from Tuacany? ;)
The monorail from the Paris/Horseshoe stop to the Sahara station would make it survivable. ;)

Steak at Herbs & Rye is overrated anyway. Their cocktail menu is spectacular though. If you want a great steak, go to Bavette's at Park MGM, SW Steakhouse at Wynn or Bazaar Meat at Sahara. None are very far from Tuscany.

Golden Steer is booked for months in advance.

Is there a secret getting in?
Show up 45 minutes before they open, stand around until they do, then ask to be seated at the bar. Otherwise, forget it.

So no way to get a regular reservation?

Is it that good? Or just popular?
It's very good, but it's not THAT good. As with most places that are this difficult to get into, the majority of it is hype. You can get an equally good (at least) steak at Bavette's, and you can get a reservation fairly easily if you make one a couple weeks in advance especially. Get the 42 day dry aged Prime bone-in ribeye. It's not cheap at $99 a la carte, but it's fantastic.

Beer is decidedly mediocre IMO.

I found the steak at Herbs & Rye to be nah-good. Cocktails were great though.

Went to the restaurant at the top of Binions last year and the steak was better than H&R (but I was a little high at the time). Golden Steer was better than either, but didn't blow me a way (aside from the price...)

I won't be going to MM this year since I live so far away from Vegas now, but the group of (now mid 40 year olds) that was nearly 20 strong 10 years ago is down to like 5 guys. Some of it s family, but some of it is absolutely the fact that the value has gone down a ton.

I won't be going to MM this year since I live so far away from Vegas now, but the group of (now mid 40 year olds) that was nearly 20 strong 10 years ago is down to like 5 guys. Some of it s family, but some of it is absolutely the fact that the value has gone down a ton.
I never had a group that big, but there were 5 of us who went pretty much every year from when we were 35 to late 40's. Now in our early 50's and they're all disenchanted by pricing, and I can't say I blame them. I still love it there. I think I'm the guy who actually is affected by the urban legend of elevated oxygen in the casinos. I literally feel more alive there than anywhere.
