ummmm, ok??
I havent been to Vegas in like 12 years, and might be going in May.
I was wondering in they ALL do, or if any dont.
I want the cheapest place to stay for two nights that I can find (will be by myself), ideally the closer to MGM the better
Excalibur
Thats the one I was looking at
Excalibur definitely does (edited: I see you weren't necessarily saying Excalibur didn't charge resort fees. Excalibur is definitely cheap... I would recommend spending a bit more and staying somewhere like Horseshoe, Planet Hollywood, NYNY, or even Luxor. Excalibur is about the bottom of the barrel unless you count Circus Circus as part of the strip). If you want to stay on the strip you're going to pay resort fees (save Casino Royale/Best Western, but don't stay there). Just bake them in and don't think of them as the seemingly ripoff charges that they are. Even with resort fees, hotels there are a great value.

Also remember that you'll pay something like 15% on the room and %15 on resort fees for tax.

So does EVERY hotel in Vegas have the "resort fee" that you dont even hear about till you get there?
If you don’t know they all have one, then that’s on you

There are a few that don’t. Cosmo still doesn’t I think (although it’s not cheap). I think the D downtown. 4 Queens, Casino Royale. Nothing really close to MGM I don’t think
Cosmo does
MGM just raised all their resort fees, and Cosmo was set at it's highest level. Wynn and Encore, and now Venetian just raised their fees as well. No doubt Caesars will follow suit soon.

I'm cool with bottom of the barrel, or basically one step up from the absolute bottom. It's 2 night, by myself, and I am the type to not care or complain much when I get what I pay for, or dont get what I dont pay for.
I'm ok saving 100-200 bucks in the name of less comfort

In that case, Casino Royale/Best Western will be the cheapest. Plus Casino Royale is an awesome old school casino whose days are very numbered (property was approved for a high-rise building, so they're almost sure to tear it down and rebuild soon). CR is right between Harrah's and Venetian, and across the street from Mirage (which will also be gone soon).

And no resort fees!

If he needs to be at MGM Grand while he's there, staying over there is too far.

I only need to be there a few hours. I could theoretically stay anywhere.
Also just looked, excalibur is like 50 a night less than that Casino Royale (granted, resort fees would even it out)

Then I agree with him. Stay over at the Best Western, better people watching, busier, and better walking area.

That's a good point. But if it's just for a few hours, walk next door to Harrah's and grab the monorail down to MGM Grand. That will be a very quick commute.

Any favorite spots for a smallish no limit poker tournament? Say something like $100 tourney with 50-100 players.
Where might be the best places for that?

I would play at Aria. They have a daily tournament but I think it's a little more than $100. Maybe $150-$200 I think. Aria's poker room is very nice. Much better than MGM in my opinion.

Will be in town next week for my annual trip. Looking forward to staying at Circa this time, but not a stadium swim view. The thumping bass and the light coming into my room (even with blackout curtains) was too much last time.

Supposedly they've taken steps to do some soundproofing. I watched a video yesterday saying they couldn't hear anything but they were way high up.

Think I was on the 8th floor last time, but made sure I’m on the other side this time.

Anybody else going in May to see Pearl Jam?
Driving up Tuesday and back home Friday. Staying right next door to the concert at the MGM Grand. Never been to Vegas before even though I've lived in the Phoenix area for 22+ years. Should be fun!
Vegas is awesome - you're going to love it! Just a bit of a warning though... MGM is HUGE. The walk from you room to the strip is much longer than you're expecting. Might not be a bad idea to familiarize yourself with the layout ahead of time using floor maps on the MGM website.

So any single zero roulette tables anywhere actually on the strip?
I believe the only single zero tables are in the high limit rooms, so about $100 and up. But as a normal FBG that probably won't be a problem for you.

Last time I checked Plaza was the only strip or Fremont property to offer single zero, and that was at like $15. Off-strip properties still have some available.

Staying in Summerlin the next 7 days. Went to Cannibal and Family crags yesterday, followed by dinner at Lotus of Siam. Black Corridor, Stone and Sweet Pain walls today.

I do like Pearl Jam though; one of the few concerts I’d consider. Maybe I’ll look into tix if it rains.

Mirage announced today it's closing July 17 until 2027 when it opens as Hard Rock.

I was planning on staying there one last time on July 21... :kicksrock:
Thought it was crazy they are closing for 3 years. Must be a complete tear down. I always liked the Mirage, ended up staying there a lot because it was the nicest place I could get a comp room. They kept it up to date and I liked the location. Sucks it is getting replaced

What is the best/most affordable downtown hotel? We're looking to go for the first week of September and will be hanging out at Circa mostly but it's too pricey to stay at Circa. 4-5 nights would be about 2 grand to stay there. I'd rather stay nearby and have more money to gamble and eat with. Anyone have any recommendations? I saw Freemont Hotel was something like $650 for 5 nights and that included all taxes and fees. Last year we stayed at Plaza for about $450 for 5 nights but it wasn't that great and this year the deal we got last year is no longer available anyway. Anyone have a go-to?

Golden Nugget is the 2nd nicest, I think the D is a decent option as well

Haven't stayed at The D, but it's always the one I look at when we kick around staying downtown. @kevzilla prob has thoughts.

Anyone ever stay at Downtown Grand? Looks pretty decent and I can get a room for $667 everything included for 5 nights.
We stayed there in 2017 when I guess it was about 4 years old and thought it was pretty good at the time. Better than places I've stayed on the strip like Imperial Palace, Tropicana, Excalibur, etc. Nice rooms, fine little casino, decent restaurant on the first floor, walking distance to everything downtown, pool area was small, but they decorated well enough with decent seating areas and good service. Not sure how it's aged in the last 7 years though...

Is it walkable at night to Fremont street?

If anyone likes playing slot games on their phone, MGM has a free app with rewards that can be used at MGM properties. I’ve been playing for a couple weeks, and have enough points to get $175 in free play at one of a couple different properties.

The game is free, but of course there are options to buy chips or other packages to boost your play, if you’re inclined.

The catch is that you have to be staying at the property that you redeem for. I’ll be in Vegas this September, and I have enough points for the free play at MGM Grand, which may be where I end up staying. Regardless, I’ll have plenty of points by then to redeem wherever I end up.

If anyone wants a referral link, shoot me a dm.

The D is good....had free parking last time I was there

I stayed at the D about 4 years ago. Overall good experience save for seeing a cockroach on the wall of my room. That killed it for me, can't go back.

ouch.....I imagine roaches are a big problem for the downtown establishments....that Freemont street crowd and environment means a lot of liquids being splashed around...

Had the same idea. We're at the Nugget last week in August. Debated between that and the Cortez and the Nugget's pool won out. Your room at the D is a good deal for NFL opening week. We got the Nugget for just under $100 a night all in.

General admission to stadium swim get you lounges if you get there early (last week in August) or need to reserve a bed?

Just saw one about a month ago. Was definitely a 100 minimum, might have been bellagio.
When people talk about minimums like this, are they talking about minimums for single numbers or for red/black types of bets? Over here there's a listed table min but even money bets and similar have higher limits at the same time

I'm going in July for a conference and I've never been less excited to go to Vegas in my life. Nothing, I mean nothing, is happening that week. Fly in Mon and out Thurs afternoon so not exactly prime for concerts, etc.

Just saw this. Rather than Hippling the thread into oblivion, I'll address several things here.

"Best/most affordable" is the sum of two different vectors, and the answer is El Cortez. However, it is two blocks east of the Fremont Street Experience canopy. Two months ago, I made that walk at 1:30 AM with $1400 in my wallet, but as I age, that gets less palatable.

The cheapest rooms under the canopy are in Binion's. They have refurbished the rooms in the original Apache Hotel onsite to their 1930s glory. That vibe is not for everybody.

I like the D, but it is loud, both in the casino and many of the rooms. Regarding the roach...they have 1900 rooms. Perfection is unattainable. The casino on the 2nd floor is a little quieter, and they play music more amenable to an over-40 crowd.

Downtown Grand was mentioned. The rooms are quite nice, even the regular ones. They also have some baller suites, and have constructed a second tower. It appears the hotel and casino actively hate each other, it's bizarre. The casino is dead much of the time, but at times I like to get away from the madness and play at their nice bar. A lot of effort has been put into making the walk more inviting, and I find it comfortable, as it is quite broad and is very well-lit these days. The rumor is the whole thing is for sale for $180 million, so let's get some FBG money together and take this thing over.

Just booked airfare for Week 1 with points. I have a slightly better relationship with ElCo than the other properties, my expectation is under $400 for five nights there. If I can find a room I want under the canopy that isn't twice that price, I'll take it.

I am a solo traveler. My favorite room downtown is the Golden Gate Suite. They aren't really suites, and the bathrooms are weird. But they are really close to the action, while facing away from it.
