I am doing my best to fill out my cheatsheets for this season and somehow it feels lackluster. In recent years I would have done 3 or 4 revisions by this time. Some other owners in my league sort of feel the same way.

We have been together as a league for over ten years, maybe it's just getting stale or possibly the world events going on lately are making fantasy football appear less important than it used to be. I'm not sure the reason. Hopefully when Sept. 7 gets here the momentum will change. Man, I have never felt this way before and it's strange in a sucky kind of way.

Any of you FFL'ers feelin the same way ? :(

This year IS sooooo much different than ever. All the uncertainty involved with players albeit RB, QB or WR has indeed tainted my previous "Feel" for the game. While I understand that everyone else may have these twangs as well, it just seems that my research gives me only a minor advantage over others in my leagues. Some sharks, but none involved in dynasties as I am. In the past I had a definate and clearcut feel to ranking players. Not so this year. It just seems that whoever gets "Lucky" will be the power team in my leagues as opposed to those who have prepared thouroughly.

That being said, will it dim my enjoyment? I think not, as I believe that this is a one year occurance-somewhat like an El Nino and will be gone next year.

 
I am glad I am not the only one feeling this way...figured it was just because I been so busy lately, and nothing seems to be going on in both my Dynasty and Keeper leagues. Usually trade talks are going on, etc, but it has been a pretty quiet season. We are still waiting for a few teams to get signed in. :confused:

I am on vacation this week, so I am hoping to jump start the season! Have all my projections downloaded, DD updated, and my FBG mag to peruse on the beach. Time to kick it into gear! :banned:

Not sure it I will have time to get all of the WR podcast downloaded before leaving! :lmao:

Step 1: Switch to an auction league/keeper format

Step 2: Switch from an internet draft to an in-person draft

Step 3: Switch the draft HQ to Las Vegas.

If you follow those 3 steps, your draft will be the highlight of your year.

 
I kind of went through what you are talking about last year. While I wouldn't say I've bounced back completely, what I do think has happened is that because of my year round dedication and devotion to everything NFL and more precisely, statistcal analysis of everything NFL - I simply don't get as much out of preparing because my philosophies are set, my tendencies are baked and thus the structure of my apporach has pretty much been set.

Face it - draft strategy has been fairly commoditized and the amount of preparation I used to feel I needed to put in, isn't the same amount anymore because:

1) Over the years, my analyzation process is more streamlined due to years of embarking on the same annual rite of passage.

2) Even with all prep, some guy who'd come to the draft with a magazine invariably would be in the play-offs with me.

One other thing too...

I almost think NFL Network has lessened my reliance on FF. I can simply turn on Channel 212 and get my football fix. Before, I used to have to 'create my own'.

I wouldn't say world events have affected me all that much in regard to football. When the NFL came back after 9/11 - I may have been more into then than ever if only because it served as comfort food and a big part of that was related to FF.

I agree. I am looking at more players with questions than ever before. I normally feel better prepared than my leaguemates and the draft just comes to me. This season, despite all my studying up, I am still gonna find myself guessing and hope to guess correct. I still do look forward to the season more and more each year though, I am sure I will hit a lull eventually, but not even close right now.

If this league is a pretty tight group of friends, I do have a suggestion. Next season plan a trip away to Vegas or somewhere similar. My league will be drafting for the 10th time next weekend. We decided to all fly into Lake Tahoe where one of the guys rented a huge lake house complete with plasma screens and poker table. Somewhere in between gambling and what little sleep we get, we will have our league draft. It only took a few days to plan and we ended up with 8 of the 12 hours being able to make the trip. The other 4 owners will draft with us by conference call.Just an idea to help wake things up.

I am with you too. I think now that I have more going on (promotion, new house, 1st baby)FFL is taking a back seat. But it is still fun to "hibernate" for 17 weeks with my family every Sunday.I also think a lot of the other comments are true. Nobody is standing out as sure-fire exciting players.((I am sure there will be a lot of fan-boys jocking their favorite jersey now. Go ahead. :pics: )I am thinking that once the big day rolls around (next Friday) and the stogie gets lit, and the boozegets flowing, and LJ comes off the board -- my same group of 12 guys for the past 11 years are gonna make it all worthwhile.Besides, I have a CHAMPIONSHIP to defend.....In closing, I agree with making it a getaway deal. We are just doing an overnight trip with a draft andlate-night poker tourney, and I am looking forward to just being a dude instead of 'dad' for a short spell.Remember....its just a game....have fun.... :banned:

This year is the most unpredictable year I can ever remember. By now I have 90% of my draft board figured out. Right now I probably have 50% figured out and I really don't think I'll feel real confident in my final rankings. There are so many question marks everywhere, every time I sit down to redo my cheat sheet I get frustrated and think, I'll wait for another weekend of preseason games. Then all preseason does is make my rankings more cloudy. :cry:

I've gone through my revisions as well for an Aug. 27th re-draft, and it's not like I'm not into it, 'cause I can still sense my excitement excalating when the season countdown started when the first preseason game was played. However, I do feel less confident about my rankings. I'm just not sure whether it's because of all the uncertainties (injuries, recoveries, new team, new head coaches, new coordinators, etc. - or the fact that I seem to be more informed about most of them) or the feeling that I'm just over-analyzing this year.

I have been slow getting started this year. I am getting married in September, so I have had other things on my mind (I even decided to hand over the commissioner duties this year)...but as soon as the draft order was announced I was all in again...it probably helps that I got the first pick.

Nailed it on the head for me. New job (with a promotion coming...i hope), a new house, my first niece being born 9 days ago...Lot going on. At the same time, I realized I used to almost do too much research and too much analyzing. So, I have reverted to what has worked for me in baseball the past couple of years....value. Instead of trying to outsmart the other guys I just let them reach and then take who I think should have been gone a round + ago. On top of that, with so much player movement and head coaching changes it all seems like a toss up.
 
This year is very strange. A long lull, it seems, this offseason. Plus, there's a lot of mid-level muck. Every position has 4-5 guys that are top tier, then like 20 guys all bunched together in the midrange. I can easily see whoever I pick as my QB, my second QB, my third RB, and my third and fourth WRs being completely irrelevant picks, not the mention my K and Defense. Hard to psyche up for a draft where it's so mechanical this year, and so irrelevant who I draft for half my picks. The first round is autopilot. Second round nearly so. Third, fourth, OK, now I have to do some thinking, but after that it's rote.

 
Im not feeling it as much as I usually do at this time - my draft is in a week, and Ive only done 4 or 5 mocks...Usually Ive done about 50 by now. I also skipped the PK and DST projections this year, Im just gonna feel it when the time comes.

I think its just a Super Bowl hangover though -- won my 1st championship last year after 9 years in the league and I just dont feel as hungry for it. That said, I think Im dialed in pretty good and ready to dominate again. I really started getting more pumped after seeing preseason week one action.

I agree that ranking your players is harder this year... so many questions still... I am glad my 2 main drafts are sept 2 and sept 9...

But as far as feelin the FF fever... it's year round and this is the month it picks up... the thing I noticed this year is my league seems to be more invovled than ever except for the assitant commish... but thats because he's had 2 tough years and spent the most time preparing over those 2 years, but he's starting to come around...

 
The feel is differnt this year for me as well. I think a lot of it has to do with the major mix up that has gone on in the offseason. As a viewer I am psyched for the NFL season because there are no teams that are a lock for the playoffs. Teams from last year have been mixed around too much. However, as far as FF, it's tough now. I mean there are a few easy picks, like Kitna will not be a top 10 QB. However there area lot of questions at key postions. Like, will Sean Alexander be the same with the new O-line? Will Palmer play the first 4 games and be the same QB he was last year? What about the Drew Brees, Gates, LT side show? Will Rivers be able to duplicate that? Despite the questionable QB and o-line in Cleavland will Winslow put up points? I could go on with most teams aside from the Vikings, Greenbay, and Raiders who are flops from the get go.

Then again, that is what makes FF so much damn fun. Once the draft is done and I see my team I am sure I will be pumped. Also, I never get very psyched for my FF team the first 4-5 weeks, it's those mid season trades, free agent sleeper pick ups, and adjustments that really get me going.

 
I think it has more to do with the "newness" of the whole thing. The anticipation is much larger the first couple of years you play, and then it becomes old hat. You'll still love the season I'm sure, but the prep is not as exciting as it used to be. This is my second year in fantasy football and I'm freaking geeked (winning 2 out of my first 3 leagues last year helped). But I'm sure by year 10, I'll be yawning my way to the draft a bit more.

Just watch how different NFL players react to the preseason. The young and unproven guys are out killing themselves, finally getting their chances in the big show just excited to prove what they can do. While the vets are complaining about how stupid it is to play 4 preseason games and that they don't even want to play in them. It's probably just kind of like that. You know what to do in your draft and once season starts, you just aren't as interested in all of the prep anymore because what more do you need to learn?

 
Ditto, just not feeling it this year. Perhaps fantasy football has worn off the newness of it all, when you first start playing it was so exciting! Now? Turn on the TV you hear about it, turn on the radio (ESPN) you hear about it, go to any sports sites and you hear about it! It's like that cool song you find and really like it then next thing it's played every hour on every radio. Burn out.

 
Plus with more and more player/coaching movements and more coaches going away from "one RB will get majority of the carries" that really lowers your excitement.

Ahh as far as the main stream media and fantasy football is concerned that is what makes it fun. Most of the "pro" main stream media fantasy football geeks mislead and screw up teams for people like us. I've had a great deal of fun drafting on my own 2 cents despite what the ESPN "gurus" say are the top 100. It was even more fun winning my league based on a bunch of mainstream media outcasts aside from Sean Alexander who I got lucky and got. However my starting QB was Mark Brunell last year. Who would have predicted he would have done ok? HAHA

I guess I always preferred the "older days" when only the die hard football watchers played the game, now you have people who don't even really follow the game that play. Call me silly but I liked having to scour fantasy information, now, it's everywhere and pretty much the same thing is said and written. Boring.Also, when just about every "expert" pretty much has the SAME projections, lists, views, etc. that to me shows nobody is willing to go out on a line or perhaps it's purely luck that all the experts have similar views. How many years can you read the same stuff? I definitely think a fresh spin needs to be injected into fantasy football sometime soon. Perhaps a new method or opinions that you can't read anywhere else. Dunno.
 
I have been a commish of a 10 team dynasty league form 9 years now. I can tell three of my original owners are not into it like they have been in past years. All 3 showed up to the draft with out any info on rookies.

 
I've been kinda going through the motions myself. It's not because of a lack of excitement though--because I really look forward to the season and keep track year round--but I'm just overwhelmed with other affairs right now, both at work and at home. Actually had to drop out of two leagues--including one which I started. :(

Gonna make one draft though next weekend; it's the league which first got me into the game and local, so maybe it's manageable. Actually cancelled a planned trip to Disney to make this one--but no way I'm as prepared as previous years. Thank goodness for these boards. They not only keep you abreast of the critical stuff (Vinatieri, anyone?!!) but those SSL's are a helluva warmup. :thumbup:

 
I've been waiting for the bug to bite me to get interested again. Its just not happening this year. Don't know why.

I've withdrawn from my leagues and declined invitations for new ones. I just don't desire to do the research like I have in the past.

I'm actually looking forward to Sundays. Just watching the game for the game's sake. Not worrying which RB is going to be active so I can send a mad-dash email to the commissioner to set my lineup at Noon.

I'm just not going to worry about it and just have fun watching the game.

 
Glad to see I am on not theonly one - no way I can read everything this year - It was better when it was not as "mainstream". For example, I am now in a league at work just for ##### and giggles and office camraderie etc. Well anyway, I gotta tell ya, trying to explain why taking corey Bradford in rd 2 makes no sense, and having three people look at me like I am the one that is crazy - WTF? Anyway, seems like there is a lot of guessing involved this year and just not as much fun! - I'll be curious to see how I feel after the games start.

I drafted M. Bell with the 1.09 rookie pick in my dynasty league and some owners where looking at me like I was :loco:
 
I envy you guys that are getting a life.

Me, I am just setting up to crush the competition and leave them writhing in the dust, as always.

:goodposting: That's a hell of a great point there RL. It's so tough to be a fan of the game AND play to win in fantasy football. I think if I was relaxed and really didn't care if I win or lose then it would be different but I actually had Sunday's where I was pissed because my guys didn't do squat! I'm extremely competitive so that can be a bad thing. I do remember when my main team was out of contention with a few weeks left in the regular season and I had a MUCH better time just sitting back and watching football. Remember when you ONLY pulled for YOUR team and NOBODY else? Something pure about that.

 
I'm the least enthusiastic I have ever been about FF since I played my first year in 1999. Sounds like I am not alone.

I can't say why exactly.

I am, however, looking forward as much as ever to the football season.

I am playing only a single keeper league (5 years :confused: ) and one yahoo league just to keep my friend happy.

I'm looking forward to sitting down at 1pm in front of my HD tv (and not in front of my computer) and not being remotely concerned if my dodgy RB3 is going to start or not.

 
Yep. I've cut back a couple leagues, haven't done a stitch of prep for an upcoming redraft league. I'm just 'meh' about it this season. :shrug: I've watched some preseason football, look forward to the season starting. The FF part though isn't working for me. :(

And this is EXACTLY why I love this hobby. I spend more time than ever watching game tapes, researching players, and formulating strategies. But if I only dominated every year, this would be SO dull. I like that the hobby constantly evolves. I like that I have to re-think strategy constantly.To reiterate something another member said, Dynasty leagues really do enhance the longevity of the hobby. Once you are thinking about your team all year long, the obsession doesn't wane.

That's a hell of a great point there RL. It's so tough to be a fan of the game AND play to win in fantasy football. You can still do that, but it takes a certain mindset. You work all week to pick your best plays and then....relax!! It's out of your hands! I've been to many a Panthers game and starting the opposing team's players on my fantasy team--and no problem rooting for the Cats! :)

:goodposting: Also the coaches from the Belichick tree like Mangini are starting to take over. These guys give no information and force 11:45 AM Sunday lineup decisions. I have a feeling figuring out which Jets RB is going to get the most carries this year is going to be futile.Other coaches like Jeff Fisher are bad about giving information prior to kickoff. All things being equal, I won't draft the Titans player.
 
I think one of the reasons that I'm not feeling it this year right now is that the 4 leagues I was in last year have already done their draft for this year. With those done, I went into another couple of leagues, survivor leagues which I'd never been in before. I think the fact that I had my main leagues drafted and ready to go before the preseason started has left me with just waiting for the regular season to start. The other thing I'm thinking is that with being in so many leagues, I have so many different players on my various teams, makes it harder to get excited about "your" players when you have so many of them.

It could also be that I'm watching too much preseason football since I have NFL Network.

And I strongly think that more and more coaches are going to end up with a more steady RBBC approach going forward. It's really a better to run an offense IMO than a simple one back approach. Always keep your team fresh and IF one guy goes down you aren't screwed with having to rely on a backup RB who is completely cold.
