Imagine you are a HS football star- Which U did you commit to? (1 Viewer)

I visited Pepperdine my senior year of high school but saw the cars in the parking lot. I didn't grow up wanting, but I knew there would be a whole different scene on the cliffs of Malibu. Holy crikey. That place was beautiful. So, incidentally, was Occidental's campus.
You expected an empty parking lot?
lol.

The cars were a little out of the price range for even upper-middle class people, for the most part.

QB? I go to Duke (There's a reason Manning always goes there to train during the offseason) or FSU who can make guys like Manuel or even Ponder look like a 1st round pick.

Any other position - Probably Alabama

ND has been churning out TE's where as I am not sure Alabama has had any in the NFL in recent memory. If I was a top flight TE ND would be a big draw.

nobody voting Michigan?

I always thought that they were highly ranked both academically and athletically- don't have they have a good football team? of course... you'd have to live in Michigan (rather than sunny, warm elsewhere).

I don't know if Pepperdine has a football team. Assuming it doesn't, my honest answer would be Harvard or Stanford. Of course if I were really good and looking for short term rewards then usc, ole miss, Alabama, Oregon, and asu would all be great options because of their programs and the likely notoriety their programs get you. Weather makes the third factor there.
pepperdine is the dream i have for my son.
Have you been to the campus - my daughter did a visit there and I told her I'm moving in with my surfboard and staying all 4 years.

I considered Michigan but the weather was the factor that pushed a school like Stanford well ahead of them.

North Carolina's been churning out even better TEs, plus the women are way hotter and you don't have to go to class.

I'd love to eventually get in a position where my "twilight job" can be teaching criminal justice there or something.

The problem here is though that a lot of us are pretty nerdy and would actually want to get the education. Hence all the Stanford/Ivy league answers.

If I was 18 and thought like a typical 18 year old I would probably do something stupid like pick the school that promised to get me laid and paid.

If I was 18 but had the wisdom and experience I have today I would absolutely choose academics over everything else.

A buddy of mine went to Pepperdine Law. He wanted to specialize in entertainment law. He does bankruptcies now.

I have a buddy who went to Pepperdine Law too. He did not have any luck getting into any big firms and finally ended up with his fathers firm. Doing well and all but he told me that being in the top 10% of Pepperdine meant nothing. To have a shot he really needed to have been top 1 or 2%.

The fake classes aren't mandatory, my friend. You can still get a good education if you want it.

And you don't want to play football at an Ivy League school unless you're dead set on being a Senator or something. Believe me- I went to one. The games are dead, the demands on your time are excessive and the women are not only less attractive but also not particularly impressed with football players. Even with the ones that are into athletes you'll be at best third in line behind hockey players and lacrosse players. Plus there's no scholarships. Go to Stanford if you're that driven/elitist.

They had a bunch back in the day. Crumpler, Freddie Jones, apparently some guy named Ethan Horton according to Wikipedia. I was mostly just going for the joke.

There's little to zero way I'd ever be able to teach at the actual law school (unless I become like the next Shapiro or something) giving my average grades at Hamline. I really wouldn't want to either. I'm talking about just teaching the undergrad courses.

BTW, most of us went to law school with the plan of doing some exotic/different. I went in with the plan to transfer to Marquette after my first year and become a sports agent. Of course, that plan went out the window when I realized that 1) becoming a successful sports agent when you aren't Jay-Z is really ####### hard; and 2) contract law is boring. I also had zero interest in moving six hours away because I was in love.

This makes sense.

It's becoming clear that Stanford is the right answer here.

Boise State. You get your choice of the best looking girl at school, which incidentally is a USC 6 and Mormon. Great degree in animal husbandry to boot. Wait, am I black? Then I pick Stanford.

Vanderbilt's not the worst choice in the world either. Football and academics are only a step below Stanford but the lifestyle is vastly superior. Southern college girls, SEC games, southern college girls, in a great city, southern college girls ...

During my last recruiting meeting, I answered the coach of my back-up school's question of- is there anything else we can do to help you decide to come here- with... how about a busty blonde in a ferrari? the coach didnt' say no... which I took as yes.

Sure, but have you ever been to Palo Alto? That place gives me the heebie-jeebies. And while it's only 30 miles from San Francisco it'll take you three hours to get there.

When I was actually 17, it would have been during Nehlen's tenure. I graduated right before RichRod. Probably would have preferred RichRod. Coach Stew probably wouldn't have been able to get enough out of me in potential.

Been there many times. Last time was in November. Pretty sure it's still not in the South.

Grew up a Michigan fan, the school is among the best, and their coach should help them win more going forward.

Would also strongly consider Duke and Stanford.

South Bay... pretty much the same thing.

I'd be playing baseball, which changes things.

Vanderbilt is the easy choice.
I love Nashville but would still put Michigan, Duke and Stanford slightly above Vandy. It is probably #4, just above ND.
A Michigan fan would have ND on his list at all?

I guess it isn't like you would consider Ohio St. but still.
I respect the institution. Besides, I grew up a big blue fan, but have since claimed Kansas (and wouldn't choose the school right now for football. Basketball - yes)

I have to think somewhere like Norman or Lincoln would be good. I just hate the South despite having lived here most of my adult life.
It's pretty damned hot in Norman in August.

Hopefully Sark gets healthy but his issues are sending USC into a tailspin. Lost some quality commits. I don't blame the kids at all- unless you are totally sold on the school for some reason that is a huge question mark on a huge decision you have made for your life when the head coach is no longer there.

so this will affect your imaginary decision about sending hypothetical elite athlete 18yo you to USC?

Damn right- I already decommited from them myself in my fantasy commit draft.

When I was in HS in the early 80's, Bobby Ross was still in his ascendancy with the program at Maryland (and FWIW, both of his kids are around my age AND went to my HS when I was there), so I would have been very happy to stay local and play football at College Park.

If I knew then what I know now of the football landscape at that time, I still would have chosen Maryland, simply because it was high-profile enough to be in the hunt with the big dogs, and at the time I would have been willing to kill or die if it meant beating Penn State.

If I was a 3.5 star Hawaii.

If I was a 4/5 star and smart(er) Stanford

If I was 4/5 star and dumb(er) Bama or LSU

If (or when) you were a big time football star in HS which school would you pick and why? Assume you get offers from all your top schools that you would consider.

For myself, it is easy. Notre Dame.

It is easy because it has everything plus I am a big fan. It is a big time school and program with a long rich history. You have a national stage and can make your name for yourself for the NFL draft. You also earn a degree that carries weight in the real world as well. Big and committed alumni for networking and opportunities after football.

The only negatives that I can think of other locations that would be more appealing as a college student (UCLA/USC, Miami, Florida, etc) and ND does not exactly rank on top in terms of numbers of hot girls.
and it's in South Bend

I would pretty easily see my top 3 as Notre Dame, Texas, and Stanford. I'm a native Texan, so Texas would be staying home but have been a lifelong ND fan. I appreciate Stanford's commitment to athletics and academics so I gather it'd be a tight decision between ND and Stanford with ND likely winning because my heart is there and if I thought I legitimately had any shot at the NFL.

UCLA. It's a yoga pants/shorts playground. Plus it's in a nicer area than USC.
IF I had been some hot-shot, blue chipper back in HS and I had my pick of schools, I probably would have gone with UCLA. Both the campus and the Rose Bowl are 2 hours from where I grew up and Westwood is pretty sweet.

A cousin of mine was lightly recruited by BC, Cuse, UVa and Vandy to name a few. Blew out his knee playing hoops Jr year and missed entire Sr season and everyone backed off. Went to Harvard, 2yr starter and captain. Runs his own hedge fund and I put the over/under on his net worth at 9 figures. Don't underestimate the powerful alumni network either.

Top 10 academic school all day long is the answer - if you are good enough to play on Sundays they will find you.
