Impossible Whopper - The Thread (1 Viewer)

fyi i am a proud palea keto meat eater who mocks the efforts of the vegan health and climate scares... soooo

Del Taco's Beyond Tacos are, as proclaimed by my daughter, BETTER than the beef tacos. Great flavor. Big surprise.

The Impossible Whopper was certainly edible, pretty good, but my restaurant rolled out the freshest bun and produce ever on this thing. Still, a beef Whopper is better, imo.

The takeaway is I am really impressed, not shocked cuz y'all and my kid prepared me. Now I just need to be convinced it matters.

Full Disclosure--I'm not a vegetarian--but it's not uncommon for me to order vegetarian options every now and then.   Normally if I go to Burger King--I get their Grilled chicken sandwich--but this thread motivated me to try the Impossible Whopper out.  Keep in mind--I'm not a big fan of the regular whopper--I'm fairly indifferent to it.

My thoughts on the Impossible--  wasn't terrible but wasn't great either.  The definition of pretty "meh" in my opinion. In brutal honesty--if I had to choose between a regular whopper and the impossible whopper--I'd still have to go with the original by a slight margin.  I felt like there was too much bread and toppings relative to the size of the patty.  The patty seemed  a little too salty to me as well.  Aside from that---I guess that for a vegetarian offering in the world of fast food--they certainly could have done worse.   I certainly prefer the veggie patty sub from subway to it.  I like how the subway patty tastes better, I like the freshness of subways veggies better than that of Burger King--and with one stripe of the southwest chipotle sauce--I find it to be a far superior vegetarian option in the world of fast food.

I like the Beyond burger at Carl's Jr./Hardee's a lot more than the impossible whopper; despite the patty being softer and spongier.

I've always been a picky eater.  A few years back, I saw a thing on 60 Minutes about these people called "supertasters".  It sounded just like me.  I went online and bought a test.  It's basically just a litmus strip that has a chemical on it that green plants/vegetables have a lot of.  You put it in your mouth for 30 seconds and then see if you get a sour taste.  I bought them for my entire family.  We all did it at the same time.  My mom and brother, who will eat anything, didn't taste anything but paper.  My dad and other brother, who are kind of picky eaters, said they had a sour taste.  I, on the other hand, started dry heaving until I actually started puking.  I could literally taste on my tongue where the strip had laid.  It was the worst taste I've ever experienced.

I tried eating bread, drinking water and soda... Nothing would stop the horrendous taste.  It was probably about 3 hours before the terribleness began to fade.  So it turns out I am a supertaster.  Which explains why I've been such a picky eater my whole life even though I tried to like other things.

With all that said, if one of these burgers has any kind of leafy green vegetable in it, I would be able to taste it right away.  That is why I said that I would be able to tell.
FWIW, I’m a supertaster too and couldn’t tell much of a difference. It tasted a little off, but if you gave me one and said it was a regular Whopper, I’d probably believe it - it’s really friggin close. Your mileage may vary.

Have you guys checked the macros on these things?  If weight loss is your goal, probably better just eating a normal burger.

What do you eat your whopper with?  Because I can't eat a burger with anything but cheese on it.  Anything else and (to borrow a phrase from Fry) it's like there's a party in my mouth.  And everyone is throwing up.

Interesting.  I didn't think this existing.  My youngest must be a supertaster because we make fun of how picky he eats.  No dressing on his salad.  The only condiment he will eat is ketchup.  He's trying to gain weight, so we experimented with a whole bunch of  protein shakes and he can't drink any of them (except for a couple of the $5 per 12 oz bottle pre made deals).  His favorite food is plain white rice.  Maybe I'll start calling him supertaster.

You can get a test from here.  I wouldn't tell him what the reaction would be, so you get an honest reaction.

I got it with everything. I used to be like that, but in an effort to eat healthier, I kinda forced myself to tolerate that green veggie taste. It worked, and more mild veggies (like the iceberg lettuce on a whopper) don’t bother me at all any more.

Not trying to doubt you, but that doesn't sound like a supertaster.  I used to be paralyzed, but then in an effort to get healthier, I decided to run more.

Maybe there are different levels?  Just seems odd.  I honestly don't know.  I do know that I tried from the time I was 16 to about 25, forcing food into my mouth, gagging and throwing up.  I hated going out on dates and not being able to eat a meal that was served to me.  I was utterly embarrassed.  I finally just accepted those foods aren't for me.  If you were able to overcome it, I am super jealous of you, GB.  That's awesome.

I think this is probably true. Since a supertaster is just someone with lots of extra tastebuds, it would make sense that a few people have LOTS of extra tastebuds, even more than just a regular supertaster. A lot of veggies tasted horrible to me, but never caused gagging or anything. Just terribly bitter. Super fatty foods are more unbearable but that's actually somewhat useful for health reasons.

It took me ten seconds to Google and see that supertasters tongues often get less sensitive with age, similar to many children who are more sensitive and then develop more standard tastes as adults.

It all sounds like an excuse not to eat veggies to me.

Like I said, I wanted to eat vegetables so when I went out on a date I wasn't going someplace fancy and forced to ask for special cooking instructions.

I just ate 1/2 Impossible Whopper and a regular Whopper.  Regular was much better.  Impossible was dry and relatively flavorless.  Would not recommend.

Just tried the Beyond Burger at Carls Jr--you can get them for free today if you order a drink. I couldn't believe they actually charge 6.99 for it.

Burger was very good--and pretty big. I could tell I wasn't eating regular meat, but I liked it. I am not a red meat fan--probably eat 2 steaks a year and maybe one burger a month. Lately my gallbladder has been telling me red meat is a no go for some reason. I would definitely try this burger again.

I liked it a lot better than the store bought ones I grilled. I would be interested to know if there is grill segregation when they cook these or are they all prepared on the same surface with regular burgers.

My guess is that it's cooked on the regular grill. I mean, you can get it with cheese so they're not really pretending to be vegan.

I have not and will not have the Burger King version (there was a BK in my college dorm - I don't think I will ever eat there again) but I've had the impossible burger dozens of times at other restaurants over the past year or so and it's amazing. I wonder if the BK version is different than other places because I can't imagine not liking it. Not an offensive taste at all, kinda has that McDonald's cheeseburger taste.

It is. I had another. It sucks compared to the one you get at a sit-down place. Super salty.

Mrs. O just had a couple of these delivered. Couldn’t wait any longer. The commercials worked.

Really good. She commented it tastes exactly like beef. She was really surprised. Otis also thought it was really good. Even had a charred flavor like it came off a grill.

Good job.

i have had Boca burgers and the like over the years. I tried the Impossible burger at BK this week and didn't care for it. As a meat substitute, it's not any better than Boca or Morningstar Farms in terms of taste. I like the idea and where we're headed with this actually. I'm not one for fast food to begin with but this didn't work for me.

I found this interesting, in that I always thought supertasters' sensitivity was really more centered around bitterness and acidity. Preferring blander presentations of food, say, like a burger, almost sounds more like it leans more to a sensory issue than finding burger topping overly bitter.

Not making any claims about you, I have no clue who you are or how you process food -- just going by a few people in my life who I know are supertasters and others with sensory issues manifesting in their food preferences.

Test arrived in the mail yesterday.  Tried it after supper.  Directions said to have it on your tongue for just a couple of seconds.  I didn't think that would be long enough, so I told him ten seconds.  He had been peppering me with questions, mostly worried that it was going to be some disgusting taste.  I told him it could be good or bad, but he couldn't know what it was so he would give me an honest response.

He put it in his mouth and not two seconds in to it, he was making faces.  I could tell it was disgusting.  I made him keep it in for the full ten seconds though.  He had trouble describing what the taste was (the card said bitter).

I tried it afterwards to be the "constant."  I held it in for a full ten seconds and tasted nothing but paper.

The information that came with the taste indicated non tasters (that's me) prefer the taste of alcohol more than others (that's also me).

It said Supertasters tend to be skinny (that's him), which was unsurprising.

Yeah, the taste is hard to describe other than "disgusting."

I actually had one of these in Vegas last week. I thought it was really good while eating it, but I would never eat it again. Burped it up the rest of the day. Not sure how to describe, but one of the things I have always liked about Del Taco is that their stuff tasted fresh and never stayed with me. That beyond stuff had really good flavor, but it was just too much. Chewed a whole pack of gum and still just tasted it on every burp.

i would definitely give it a shot at a restaurant if you can.  it is definitely better than Boca or Morningstar.

Finally tried this over the weekend. I got a regular whooper and the fake whopper. They tasted about the same to me. The fake was more salty, and the texture was off a little, but it was fine,

Just did the same. Texture is definitely the issue more than the flavor.

It tastes fine. It’s not quite as good as the regular whopper, but okay.  I’ve been toying with the idea of going pescatarian. If I do, when I have a BK craving I would be okay with this.

Is it age, you think, or is it lifelong? My family eats tons of red meat, and I feel sluggish and awful after I do. I don't think it's an accident, either.

It causes a bunch of stuff that is TMI, but sluggishness and tiredness are among it.
Look up Alpha gal

Bites from certain ticks, such as the lone star tick in the US, and the paralysis tick in Australia, which can transfer this carbohydrate to a victim, have been implicated in the development of this delayed allergic response to consumption of mammalian meat products

I haven't tried the impossible burger yet but I did try the "Improbable Watermelon" which is made entirely from meat and meat by-products.   The texture was off a little and you could tell the little seeds made of charred gristle were fake but the taste was right on and I actually prefer it to the real thing.  9/10
