Indefinite Tampa Bay Bucs thread: Somehow not on the list of teams to never have won a Super Bowl (1 Viewer)

Are you a Colts' fan?  There's no reason for Licht to trade for Brissett right now, nor would there be any reason for the Glazers to allow him to trade future franchise assets when they don't know who will be the head coach and/or GM next year.  Licht did sign a 2019 extension before the season.  What chance did he blow?  If he is still the GM in the off-season and the franchise indeed does like Brissett they could attempt to trade for him at that point.

As it is they have 3 capable QB's on the roster.
I can assure you that I'm definitely not Colts fan... I'm just saying that Licht should have done quicker earlier today but now he'll have to compete with other GMs with Ballard selling Brissett to the highest bidder.  Buccs' offensive playmakers are far more talent than Colts' yet Luck kept his team altogether.

I have no idea what they'll do at the QB position, but they are too stacked at the skill positions to break in another rookie.

He's just a game manager. Plays it safe but not gonna go out and win you 10-12 ball games a year.
THIS is the reason for my initial suggestion for Licht to trade for Brissett.  What Buccaneers need more than ever is game manager for talent offensive team.  Fitzpatrick may be bit safer than Winston but both will always make risky decision / pass.

You don't put great skill position players with a game manager, it largely gets you nowhere. Game managers historically only succeed when you have a great defense. We have the worst defense by far in the NFL right now. And only a complete new infusion of talent AND coaching is going to reverse that. It's a lengthy project.

Unless the Bucs make the playoffs, Licht is getting fired in the offseason.

Guy's been a disaster of a GM. He has a long record of incompetence starting with Winston and ending with a kicker in the 2nd round.

Exactly. He would waste the talent of the skill position players. Evans, Howard, Godwin, Humphries, Brate. Team is stacked. You don't put a Yugo in a race with Ferraris. Bradford would as well. he's a zero. They need to draft a franchise QB. They won't find what is needed on the scrap heap. Winston showed that anyone can drive them down the field. Just barely over 3 years it took them to figure out he's not the answer, but the problem. They should have hired me to make that call, they would waited 1 year and had Goff or Wentz. They need someone that can complete it with a TD, not an INT.

Lovie had complete control of the roster when Winston was selected.  There is also plenty of smoke surrounding the selection of Aguayo suggesting that pick came directly from the top of the organization.  Part of me believes that considering Licht was extended through 2019 during this off-season.  I believe the Glazer's have been happy with his drafting, in general, considering some of the ultra busts may not have been 100% his decision.

I'm not talking about you specifically, but I love how every bad decision is someone else. Michael Johnson, Anthony Collins, Josh McCown? Lovie. Winston? Lovie. So did Licht want someone else and Lovie forced him to draft Winston? And you'll notice all this smoke about Winston being Lovie's decision is coming out now, right? Up until this season Licht was clear he wanted to draft Winston after his RS FS season. NOW it changes...

Aguayo? Glazers. Again, is Licht a toddler?

Then fire Licht because he's just a yes man. I don't care. And who's leaking this stuff anyways? Maybe Licht? It's just so clearly stupid either way. Either Licht's a terrible GM or he's a puppet.

Plus, then what decisions HAS Licht made? Because there still are a ton of terrible decisions to wreck him on.

Just posting what I've heard.  That season with Lovie was all him on a personnel basis.  Those were "his" guys.  Licht would have handled the contracts.

After that Licht would have been in charge of personnel, which is why he was retained, and I do believe the Glazer's had specific input in the selection of Aguayo to the tune of "we need an ace kicker, go get this kid from FSU because our fanbase will love him."  He defended both the Winston and Aguayo selections, as did I at the time, but what else is he supposed to do?

At least with the Rays when I think “What are they doing?!” It’s because they have a plan that’s so far advanced from my comprehension I can’t see the positives until they actually materialize on the field.

With the Bucs? They have no semblance of a plan. Morons from the top to the bottom.

And they might find a new QB to groom
I’m not sure where from? They need someone who’s ready to play with the weapons they already have in place on offense.

With the defense as bad as it is I don’t see how you can afford to use early draft picks at QB.

Maybe Teddy Bridgewater is interested in a chance to start with some impactful skill position players? Is he really better than Jameis?

Just looking at his two healthy seasons starting. No, he’s not.

I personally would like to see Jameis get a fresh start with a new coaching staff in a more diversified offense. He’s better than any other available option in the draft or free agency.

I was thinking in the draft, but you are right, they do have some of at least the offense in place. I don't follow closely so not sure about the rest of the team.

Of vets, Derek Carr, maybe? Bridgewater will be cheaper

I think it’s fairly obvious Carr won’t be in Oakland next year.

If Tampa’s new HC isn’t interested in Jameis then he could be an option.

His relationship with Gruden is as fractured as Jameis’ is with Koetter.

Later Koetter.  Who’s next?  Harbaugh?
Jim or John?

I'm personally somewhat enamored with an Arians/Bowles combination.  Licht and Winston staying on lead me to believe he's a target.  Arians has had many positive things to say about Jameis in the past.  Licht worked with them in Arizona.  Brentson Buckner is already here and rejuvenated this defensive line.  It makes a lot of sense.

Was thinking Jim

Well I am perpetually excited and then immediately disappointed but this seems pretty great.

Bruce Arians needed some convincing.

At 66, the retired former Cardinals head coach was interested in interviewing for the Bucs job, but it also became a recruiting trip of sorts when he arrived in Tampa Friday night.

That’s when the Bucs got an assist from Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

Arians and Maddon grew up about 100 miles apart in eastern Pennsylvania. Arians is from York and Maddon from Hazelton, Pa.

They hit it off when introduced about four years ago by general manager Jason Licht during the Cubs spring training in Meza, Ariz., just outside Phoenix, when Arians was coach of the Cardinals.

Both are charismatic and stylish men, successful well into their 60s. Both took a long time to reach their goal as manager and head coach. And both Arians and Maddon like to think a little out of the box.

So Licht enlisted to the help of Maddon, who lives in Tampa in the off-season and is co-owner Ava, a trendy south Tampa Italian restaurant.

With the help of Maddon, the Bucs sneaked Arians in through the kitchen of the restaurant and into a private, hideaway dining room.

Maddon help sell Arians on living in Tampa Bay and apparently he liked the area.

On Saturday, Arians underwent a physical and crushed the interview with the Glazers.

On Tuesday, the Bucs reached an agreement on a four-year contract with a fifth-year option to coach the Bucs.

-Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

How freaking cool is that?! Thanks, Joe!

I don’t want to be that guy, but was that written by a professional writer? A 6-year-old kid could do better. Scary.

Best thread subtitle ever. I'll follow. I haven't been in here before and I'm sure it has been said, but I don't think Mike Evans has had his best year yet. And I guess I'm buying Barber on the cheap.

What would have happened if Winston doesn't throw interceptions for Pick-6 in the season opener? NYG on the docket next, Bucs could have been looking at 3-0 getting ready to roll into Los Angeles and the Coliseum in a few weeks.

Great job by the Bucs defense to find a back bone, credit the coaching staff and the wonderful group Arians was able to assemble.

Plenty of "what ifs" from week one.  Not much they can do about it now.  Have to beat the Giants at home as the NFL schedule makers bent the Bucs over with 5 away games in a row including two west coast trips and an international flight.

Definitely a great coaching staff.

Winston threw it 36 times in week one despite it being a close game. They aren’t going to win many games when he’s chucking the ball like that. 26 throws last night, tolerable run game, great D = Ws

What is everyone's thoughts on the late season surge we're seeing? Are you buying into this success or is it just another meaningless win streak we're going on that doesn't matter because we've been eliminated from the playoffs? I'm a bit up in the air about it, we have beaten up on some pretty bad teams on this 4 game win streak, but the defense, especially the secondary, does seem to be turning the corner a bit. Jameis has obviously been better recently and it's looking pretty likely he'll be back next season on the franchise tag or a short term deal. Gonna be a real tough test for him this week with all the injuries at WR, but if we're able to gut out a win on Saturday, I think that may make me feel better about how legitimate this win streak has been.
