Indiewire 100 best films of the decade (1 Viewer)

oy

Watched the first 2 eps (1980s, 1990s) of CNN's Tom Hanks-produced The Movies, but am putting off watching the latest ep about the 21st C. In the 80s ep, i liked about half - yes, i'm a prig - but noted almost every picture, even all the dreadful latchkey fanboy wish-fulfillments, in their rundown as being landmark in its way. For the 90s, those ratios were about 25% good, 75% landmark. I know i'm going to be nostalgic for those %s in the 21C ep, even though it got off to a rollicking start. And this decade................

I know i'm old and movies are made for those who'll go and i wont go, and i know that TV is exploring a lot of the themes & filmmaking techniques i used to look for in movies, but i still want to be swept away & brought home safe as much as i did when i was 11 and, except for the awesome 3D experience of Gravity (which does not translate to 2D, cinematically) that hasn't happened in a very long time.

There are always going to be critiques with lists of this sort... but Magic Mike XXL at #26?  I can't say that I've seen that movie, but seems odd.  Particularly given that they've left out stuff like 12 Years A Slave, Whiplash, Black Swan, etc.

Interesting list. Lots of good films I’ve seen and way more that I haven’t. Though I’m pretty far behind on my movies as I’ve spent more recent time exploring the past.

My rough top 10 in no order

Social Network

Lady Bird

Moonlight

Dunkirk

Get Out

Call Me By Your Name

Her

La La Land

Silver Linings Playbook

Nebraska

   The movie from this century that’s stayed in my head the most.

This list looks right up my alley.  Think I’ll start running through all those that I haven’t seen.  Should I start at the bottom or the top?

Rough top 10 of the teens from someone who has never seen a lower % of releases than in the last decade:

1. The Imitation Game

2. Gravity (in theater 3D only)

3. Silver Linings Playbook

4. The Grand Budapest Hotel

5. The Social Network

6. Lady Bird

7. Whiplash

8. Winter's Bone

9. Lincoln

10. Hugo

performance of note: Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine

worst movie: La La Land

You are probably the first person I know whose also seen it. Yeah it really did stay with me and I listened to that Psychedelic Furs song on repeat for like a week after seeing it. As for the list, it has no order so you should approach it from whichever end you looks best.

Great list.

Totally agree on Cate in Blue Jasmine

Stop it.

Only real notable exclusions for me are: The King's Speech, Toy Story 3, It Follows. I'd be darn sure to put another nod to the MCU in a list of mine but it's understandable how more don't show up on a ranking like that.

Oh, my post was misleading.  I meant I should see the indiewire list.  I have seen all on your list other than La La Land (which I've no interest in seeing).

La La Land seems like a caricature of a classic musical imo.
I couldn’t disagree more. From the fact the singers weren’t typical musical quality singers and didn’t get dubbed, the downbeat ending, the somber tone. I think it quite expertly brought the classic idea of a Hollywood musical into much more modern sensibilities.

Works for me  ;)

This may very well be the most pretentious list I have ever seen. The only thing that could have made it better is if they just listed 100 movies because no one can truly rank art.

It is from a site called Indiewire so that shouldn’t be a surprise .

Wow, your list makes the linked top 100 one look like a pile of cat poop.

Maybe you should be compiling it instead.

Another list much better than the attached one.

Under the Skin #2? No. Absolutely not.
It was horrible (and Scarlett Johanson was often naked in it so that's saying something). I skimmed through if after about an hour of going absolutely nowhere.
