iPad (1 Viewer)

So I am thinking about getting my mom an ipad for xmas.

She is not good with tech at all and will just be using it for email, the internet, maybe shopping at some point, and skype/facetime.

Which version is best for a 63 year old woman who never used a touch screen before, Air, ipad2, or mini?

I'm leaning towards the 2, but if the frontfacing camera is ####, then I'd rather get the newer one. My kid will need to recognize its grandparents after skyping with them.

Is the mini too small for somebody who maybe doesn't see as well, or have good finger dexterity?

I have the new iPad which I think is the 3rd generation that is in mint condition. Not sure what it's worth, but I may want to let it go to get a newer one.

I'd either get the air or the 8.9 Kindle Fire HDX . The mayday button on the HDX could save you a lot of hassles with a non tech savvy mother

She's getting an iphone4 too, so it will be easier for her to just learn one thing.

that makes sense . if she lives near an apple store have her take a free workshop on the ipad

iPad Pro being reported to come out in late 2014. iPad Pro is going to be 12.9". Holy cow!

iPhone 6 needs to be in the 5"-5.5" range to win me back.

Guesses on the iPad Pro price? $1,099?

What a disaster iTunes has turned into. Used to be such a good interface, now it is a buggy, jumbled mess.
yeah, this is one area apple has #### the bed. iTunes is a complete cluster####.
Unless you're using a Mac, then it's rock solid and fast as hell. On a PC it's a huge POS.
:goodposting:

iTunes works awesome on my Macbook Pro... but it's cumbersome and laggy on my pop's Dell desktop at their house.

I hav 40GB of music in my iTunes library on my PC. I use it so little that I haven't yet even bothered transferring it to my Mac, iPad, or phone. Spotify and Pandora pretty much handle the whole thing. The ONLY time I even use iTunes is on plane flights and even then I'm usually watching a movie or listening to a podcast.

Try itunes match.

So, what will Apple do with the iPad Pro? From the video, I like how you can have more than one app open (4 on the Samsung) and resizing them. The screen looks crisp but busy but that may be customizable... will Apple allow some customization?

One downside I can see here is that this is essentially a netbook. Can't do high powered computing things like video editing or any thing like that. You are pretty much stuck with what the machine will allow so the price tag for this piece of equipment may be too much for the lack of computing ability you will get with it.

Is there any real difference between the iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina Display? (Couldn't they have come up with a better name?) Looking at this page, I can't see any real difference, other than the obvious ones (the size of the screen, and the cost).

I have an iPad Gen1 and I am thinking of upgrading, and if there is no real difference, I might just go for the mini. I don't tend to watch TV on my iPad.

I have a regular iPad and a Mini. I LOVE the mini. my boss bought an Air and wishes he had gotten a mini. It's a great size for pretty much everything.

That's what I thought. Unless you are watching movies, not much need for the Air. Plus you save $100+

I'm in bed surfing on the mini, texting my wife, controlling my chrome cast, and ten other things. Love this device.

Mini retina 16gbn. Wifi. Boss got everyone one for Christmas. I have match as well and it's awesome. Between match and Dropbox I hardly use any storage.

I have a first gen ipad as we'll that was a Christmas gift from my wife and I can't let it go. But I almost never use it.

Thanks!

I figure if I get a new iPad we will largely use the old one to view movies on trips. Just having trouble getting cords to charge it. even brand new ones fail. :(

A little off topic but those of you that have switched to spotify - do you ever use airplay with it? I have an ongoing issue where it will stop streaming to the Apple TV in the middle of a playlist and it forces me to go back to iTunes.

I have had issues with bluetoothing audio to a speakerfrom an iPhone 4s and an iPad 1. It usually happens a couple minutes after I start, and I need to go back to the app and either press play again or restart it. Most of the time I'm using the ESPN radio app.

I find that happens when I have multiple apps open that would play audio. If Netflix is still open, even in the background, and I'm trying to Pandora the audio will stop on occasion. Close Netflix and it will work fine.

There is a free app on the appstore called Playable that everyone should download before apple catches it and deletes it. Trust me.

I'm having issues with my iPad 3 now, all of a sudden.

I updated to the latest iOS last weekend. Now my iPad has just drains its battery for now reason. It will be at 100% at night, not get used at all, and be dead the next day. No new apps. No location services on or things operating in the background that were not before.

Thoughts?

Apple believes that this new Retina MacBook will be a significant step forward in the laptop industry, and it is currently unclear if Apple will label this machine as a smaller MacBook Pro, a new MacBook Air, or as an entirely new line.
Apple is dropping the apple on a few major things. iPad sales are slumping overall. iPad's are really expensive compared to Samsung's and even Windows are dropping... not ones made by Microsoft but other Windows 8.0 carriers.

The Beats buy is to market to younger kids but younger kids/teens don't have the money that Apple charges. If Apple does the right thing and brings out a comparable Surface 3 around the same price ($1,000) that might be something people will buy but I don't see them doing that. Since iPhone prices have not been 100% confirmed yet, Apple seems to be dropping their apples. Revenue might be up but for how long? They can only rely on so many Angry Birds and such.

WAT?

11:03pm indeed.... drunkposting IMO.

Has anybody "upgraded" to iOS 7.1.2 yet? I'm reluctant after the last upgrade messed my iPad up for a while.

ETA - I see the battery drain issue mentioned in a few posts above.

I don't drink, sorry. Anyway, Apple needs to eliminate the MacBook Air and turn that into a bigger iPad similar to the Surface 3 possibly along a similar price structure. A new, bigger iPad for $900 with a keyboard and Apple has a winner. Even better if it was cheaper in the $700-800 range. If Apple wants to go mobile and be business friendly, this is the way to do it.

The only reason I have not switched back to Windows full time is because, as of right now, I am intrenched in Apple. If Windows was a bit easier to use for my liking, I'd have made the switch. If Apple comes out with a similar product as the Surface 3... that will be gold. If not, Apple is in trouble and will be treading water for the future.

btw - 6:18 pm, wide awake here

Had a bad news/good news happening yesterday. My son spilled some Gatorade on my Gen1 iPad. Bad news I think it is dead, good news I will get a new one!! (It was slowly dying anyway). The one I had was an AT&T, and I don't think I need that again. I can use my 5s as a hotspot.

So here is my question:

1) Refurbished iPad Air Wi-Fi 32GB - Space Gray - $509 from Apple

2) Refurbished iPad mini with Retina display Wi-Fi 32GB - Space Gray - $419 from Apple

3) Apple iPad mini with Retina display | A7 chip | 32GB | Silver - $484.99 + Free $40 iTunes Gift Card from Costco

Any other 'sales' elsewhere would be appreciated.

TIA

Did our bit for the economy today. 3 iPod touch 5s, and an iPad mini. All with 32g and all from Costco. Big bill from Amex next month!!!!

iTunes is such a ####### disaster now. How did they screw it up so bad?
I haven't been on iTunes in a year and a half. No real reason to go on since I can update iOS over wifi

I think the last time I went on was to check our their new at the time radio app: hot garbage.

.

Speaking of which, I have an iPad 2 (opted for the 2 even though the 3 was available when I cracked my previous 2; $100 less and no real difference to me in performance) and am holding off moving to iOS8 until the next iteration. Too many horror stories. I understand that the 2 is the oldest model theoretically supported by iOS8, but still seems like a mess.

Where do you do your backup? Or do you do it to the iCloud?

Back up what?

If I take pix or video I like I dump them to the PC via dropbox.

Anything else??? Haven't tethered the iPad in well over a year.

Most apps have data on them, settings, etc. most of that can be backed automaticly via wifi to iCloud when plugged in.

Am I the only one that backs up? Had a ipad die recently, and had a fairly recent backup. Setup of the new one was a piece of cake.
