iPad (2 Viewers)

Back from Apple store. 3G 64GB in hand. I stopped in this afternoon nobody was there, but Apple and the ridiculous sensationalism don't let me buy one ... they go on sale at 5PM, and the store closed between 4 and 5. We go back a while later, big production, line of a couple hundred people probably. We get in about 15 minutes in buy one and we're out the door.So now I need to post up my 32GB Wifi version on eBay tonight. Supposedly they are still fetching more than we paid for them if we sell internationally. Was interesting, they weren't taking cash purchases -- credit card only, so they could track who was buying them and how many. They apparently want to limit the folks who are exporting them. Some teenage kid only had cash, so he gave me his cash and I bought his on my card. Was relatively painless. In any event, given the amount I use this thing, my fiance convinced me that the 15-30 bucks a month is totally worth it. Pretty psyched. Also, even though I was only using a little more than half my 32GB, I figured, since I seem to be using this thing a ton, it made sense to upgrade to the 64GB. I'm going through the restore and setup now. Supposedly it is setting the thing up just as my old one was. We'll see. Also curious to see how the AT&T data plan setup works. :pickle:
what did this set you back?
$829 for the unit, $30/month for the 3G.Otis = :moneybag:

Wife just said, "well, lets get you one. I bet you'll like that."Question: how big is the average app? book? I have about 12G of music but don't really add a lot of tunes. But I'm imagining using the iPad for lots of reading and some games (played NBA Live and Madden on it at Best Buy - those will be "must haves.") Want to make sure I get one big enough. But if I go to the 32G with 3G, its $730. Eessh...
Abe,I have the 32Gb wifi version, and the space was pretty adequate. I had a bunch of music on there, a few movies, and a bunch of apps, and it was just more than half full. The apps do not take up much space at all, so you needn't worry about that when considering size. For me, once i was looking at spending 730 bucks for the 3GB 3G version, it was pretty easy to just max it out for another hundred. But if you don't need to have all of your music and movies with you all the time, 32 should be fine.

:moneybag: Thanks, GBO.

I LOVE my iPad but I get a headache every time I turn on the Wi-Fi. Will I have the same problem with 3G?
:lmao:
I'm serious.
Forgive Otis, he thinks anything said negative about ANY Apple device must be some sort of joke. It's unpossible that there are issues!!!1!1!111!!!!!
If you're taking this seriously, you are pathetic. Dear fisher: ipad wifi cant give you a headache. Thanks, oats
This is true. They've already stated the wifi isn't as strong as regular devices. "Get closer to the router"

Went to an Apple store yesterday to test out the Ipod touch as I need to replace my old broken Ipod. Played around on the Ipad for a bit, is it really anything more than an Ipod touch with a bigger screen? I don't get it. Certainly wouldn't prefer it to a laptop or netbook.
Depends on what you need it for. If you want a device to just consume media then the iPad could be a good choice for you. If you are a casual gamer then the iPad could be a good choice. I personally use my laptop for way more than the iPad can do currently but we are considering one to kinda lay around the house for browsing the web or homework research.

Tip: Ignore otis. He laughs or insults anyone who says anything about the iPad he does not like. Complete waste of time.
So you think his headaches are caused by the ipad wifi? You guys are really awful at this. All of it.
Actually I didn't get a headache today, possibly because of the extra alcohol consumption. I figured, if I have to risk brain tumor by second hand Wi-Fi then, darn it, I'll enjoy my iPad even if it kills me. :wall:

Abraham,

To your question, i have a bunch of apps loaded up (way more than i use, probably 5 pages worth) and the total of the apps is just over 3GB.

Loving the 3G version so far. Getting better at touch typing on this thing too, which is good. Found a great free news app called Newsy that im really digging. Used the Beat the Traffic app this weekend while driving to avoid traffic on my way out to the beach. On the downside, using it at the beach is, as you would expect, not the best. It was workable for limited email checking eqtc, but i wouldn't want to try reading on it in strong, direct sunlight. Also, i saw the high temperature warning for the first time. I had it laying out in direct sun face up for a long while, and it was near 90 this weekend. Went to pick it up and there was a warning on the screen. So i threw it in my bag for a few minutes and took it out and it was fine. But still worth noting.

Im liking the Apple case a lot more than the incase one because it is way less bulky. The fold behind stand really works well for touch-typing on a table top etc.

Wifi is still doing the whole disconnect thing. Not sure how to fix that but I will have to look into my router settings.

Last night dumped the majority of my music onto it (way more than I am actually listening to) along with a few recent episodes of The Pacific. I also have every app i could care about. Im at around 32GB now.

Iteleport is a great app for remote controlling to my computer desktop, but i still wish there were a Fulltilt app.

Also wondering what other apps i should have now that i have 3G. Im assuming there is no Skype yet. But maybe a texst messaging app or something? ATT assigned me a phone number, so im just wondering what else i can do here...

Apple Sells One Million iPads

CUPERTINO, California—May 3, 2010—Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*

Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

Another gripe about this thing -- 3G is pretty slow. I know AT&T stinks, so I don't know if it's them or someone else's fault, but I've never had 3G before and was expecting web pages to load a little more quickly. For e-mail and quick map checks and app usage on the go it's fine, but just not nearly as snappy as my wifi connection at home through FiOS (where everything loads about as fast as it does on my main computer).

Will apple allow a poker app to be sold through the app store (pokerstars or fulltilt)? If so, I'm kinda surprised these guys are behind schedule.
Seems to me it's FullTilt and PokerStars not developing for the platform vs. Apple not allowing it. Zynga (makers of Farmville, Mafia Wars) got their start with Zynga Live Poker on the iPhone. It's a nice app, but wish PokerStars would get one out so I could play from my account there.

I was assuming the opposite -- I was assuming Apple didn't want to support online gambling (much as with the porn issue), so they just won't greenlight any such apps. :homer:

Don't know for sure. I know they allow play money gambling, there are tons of casino apps. I would agree that real money isn't allowed by Apple.

I'm really starting to want an iPad, although I like my laptop, the battery life sucks and I just want to leave it at my desk for the most part and use the iPad.

I think the last thing keeping me from buying is wondering how quickly it will become dated...if 4G iPhones are coming soon, can a 4G iPad be far behind? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Is it possible they'd develop the apps anyway to be used on jailbroken iPads?

I had this concern today. You've got to expect that in a year or 2 there will be 4G networks and 4G iPads. That said, I guess if you sit around and wait about technology becoming outdated, you'll never buy anything.90% of my usage is at home on my wifi, so it's a non-issue in that sense. For the time on the road, I can live with 3G. Sure, it won't be as fast as 4G, but I'll at least get a few years' worth of use before I want/need to upgrade for something else.

The phenomenon you are describing is exactly what's happened to me. I carry this thing with me all over the apartment all the time. I rarely, if ever, sit down at the computer desk and use the iMac. I sit 3 feet from the Macbook and don't bother opening that either. My iPad is just such a pleasure to use, I don't need or want anything else.

There are exceptions. Like this morning I tried to edit an eBay listing on the eBay site and couldn't. I know there's an eBay app, but I haven't bothered with it yet. May have to. Point being that every now and then, at least as of May 2010, you will need to switch on to a "real" computer to accomplish some task. Most of that I do through iTeleport -- like last night, I was downloading some torrent stuff from my iMac. I would use the iTeleport app to access the iMac desktop, set it to download some more stuff, then continue on with whatever I was doing, all from the comfort of my couch. The more I use it, the more adept I'm getting. Probably not "magical," but a pretty awesome device.

I'm assuming this will be the way to do it, eventually. When they sell a million of these things in a month, it only makes sense to me that the poker sites make apps for it.

While the mac haters are edging out the fanboys in tool factor, I find it very strange how much Otis seems to care about this stuff. Dude, it makes you seem a little insecure.

Ok by me. I can't let absurdities like "this device gives me headaches" lay out there untouched. Ridiculous. But yeah, I get geeked out about this stuff and enjoy reading about it, and now that I own one I was hoping to exchange info on it with others. Was hoping this thread would be more productive than it's been, but what can I say -- people on the internet have bizarre motivations. I can't explain why people who neither own nor care for this device spend countless hours in this thread reading and writing about it. Human nature is a crazy thing sometimes. :)

HINT: If you would just ignore the hater comments, rather than respond, this thread would get back on track. The haters egg you on because it is so easy to do so. Half the threads in here are you responding to their posts, and them responding back.

Coming from the guy who doesn't own an iPhone but posts relentlessly in every iPhone thread? Rich.

It's sometimes fun to give them some rope and watch them hang themselves.

I don't spend countless hours in there telling the iPhone owners how much the thing sucks, and I'm interested in owning an iPhone. HTH
Buy one?Oh, and pointing out flaws isn't saying "how much the thing sucks". The iPad is a very nice device, with some flaws.

The eBay app is junk. At this point it's only use is browsing and bidding on listings.

Well, I don't get it either. :lmao: I've never had the urge to troll Android or Windows threads. Pretty pathetic.

Once all the tools are on ignore, this thread gets much better.

Gotta admit, 1 million in less than a month is damn impressive. Apple is a machine.

That's pretty much how I see myself using it and why I want it, especially since I don't have an iPhone I know I will use this thing A LOT. Obviously all technology gets upgraded at some point but if there will be 4G iPads in 6 months I'd have to think about it. That would probably be the soonest I could see them out, and when you factor in you could still probably sell your 3G at that point for decent money, the utility you'd get from the iPad in that time seems high. I'm starting to look forward to getting one

I don't think you will see a 4G iPad until next year, at the earliest.

The OS will be upgraded this fall, which will drive holiday sales. I don't think ATT will role out extended 4g coverage until 2011 - which means you are looking at June/July of next year before you see the first 4g iPads.

I am kind of like Otis in this regard - I only have the wifi model, but I think this will suffice for me for a couple of years - I will probably upgrade in 2012, which will give apple and ATT time to work out the kinks with a 4g network.

Those of you with 3G ipads, does the ABC app work for you when you're on 3G (not wifi)? I was all set to sell my parents' wifi version for the 3G but I've read video is being throttled down (Netflix) or doesn't work at all (ABC) on 3G. Confirm?

My parents love their ipad. They feel technologically savvy with it, even tho they're the type that gets scared off by the remote control on the home theater I set up for them. My 5yo can do almost everything on it already. I'll definitely end up getting an ipad for myself down the line. I just wish Apple would stop calling this thing "magical" in their press releases. I keep picturing Jobs waving a wand when I read it.

edit: One more thing I was curious about, has anyone with an iphone or att simcard tried to use it on the ipad? It's apparently very easy to hack a full size sim to to fit in the micro sim slot on the ipad and use an adapter ($1) to put it back on the phone.

Jailbreak for the iPad is available. Not going to link to it because Joe hates rebellious behavior, but just google "spiritjb" and you'll find it.

Note: Make sure you run it in Windows 98 compatability mode. Little glitch in the software.

The big question that many will ask is when a major poker site, such as PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker, will release a real-money application for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. The barrier for these poker sites isn’t the cost of developing an application; the issue is having an application approved by Apple. Since Apple is known to deny anything even close to controversial and buckle under any sort of social pressure, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that it wouldn’t allow an online poker site to release an App.Even though many of PokerStars’ and Full Tilt Poker’s clientele are outside of the United States, because the laws of California and the United States govern the Apple Store, the company must abide by those rules. Therefore, because of the murky and uncertain legal climate regarding online poker in the United States, there are no real money poker applications for any Apple device.

:goodposting: I still don't know why they wouldn't release 'play money' apps. Both sites run their "poker school" .net sites which are really just front doors to get you hooked and move you to the real money games. Seems a big marketing miss to ignore the iPhone platform, even if it's just play money. IMO.

Just got iteleport up and running. Very sweet. That adds the work interface that might get this thing comped by work. Being able to use excel and other MS work programs is huge. Also provides some light duty flash accessibility.

:) Glad you're enjoying it. This is what my asus netbook did - it is on 24/7, always within 3 ft of where I'm sitting whether on the couch, kitchen, or in bed, and I never use my desktop anymore.
